From MPD:

Last night at around 3am Fourth District Vice Officer Freddie Pujols gained information that a burglary had just occurred at the St Thomas Episcopal Church in the Second District at 2665 Woodley Road Northwest. Officer Pujols had received information that the suspect had broken into the church through the roof and had removed a large amount of electronic equipment from the church. Officer Pujols left his home and proceeded to the area of 14th and Spring Road Northwest where he made contact with Officers Clayton Smith and Shaun Heffelman who were working in the area. Officer Pujols had a lookout for a vehicle that the suspect was driving. The officers quickly spotted the suspect vehicle and conducted a stop. The officers observed that the vehicle was loaded down with high end electronic equipment. The officers checked the St Thomas Church and made contact with a person who was living there. That person was unaware that the church had been broken into but soon discovered that a suspect had entered through the roof and had indeed stolen all the equipment.

Investigation revealed that the suspect stopped was indeed the suspect who had broken into the church in the middle of the night and he was arrested and charged with Burglary in the First Degree. Fourth District and Second District Detectives are continuing to investigate this case to determine if this suspect might be related to other similar crimes in the area.

Officer Pujols was alerted of this information when he was at home and off duty however because of his dedication and sense of duty he did not hesitate to respond into the city and get the help of Officers Smith and Heffelman. These three officers dedication to duty resulted in an outstanding arrest of a burglary suspect.

Dear PoP – Expansion of Capital Bikeshare Program

Georgia Ave-Petworth Metro Saturday April 23

“Dear PoP,

DC Department of Transportation (DDOT) has a map of proposed Bikeshare stations accessible via their website (http://ddot.dc.gov/DC/DDOT/On+Your+Street/Bicycles+and+Pedestrians/View+All/Bicycle+Sharing Under the section marked Expansion).  DCers can advocate for one of the proposed stations by emailing comments to ddot.bikeshare@dc.gov A public meeting on future Bikeshare expansion is scheduled for May 25th from 6-8 pm in room 1107 at 441 4th Street NW.”

On a selfish note – I’ll ask people who live in the Petworth area to please advocate for one on the corner of Georgia Ave and Upshur St, NW. Please! This past weekend (see photos) both Sat. and Sun. all the bikes were gone from the Georgia Ave-Petworth metro station.

Where else do you think should get a new station? Don’t forget to email your comments to ddot.bikeshare@dc.gov.

We recently spoke about the scarcity of Capital Bikeshare bikes at certain stations here.

Dear PoP – How Do I legally Rent Out the 3rd Floor of my House?

Photo by PoPville flickr user Takka-San

“Dear PoP,

I know you have posted questions about renting out a basement, which includes its own entrance and is a self-contained rental unit, as well as issues when someone rents out their entire house — but what do I, as the owner/resident of the property, need to do to legally rent out the third floor of my house. Anything? And how are the tax deductions affected? Do I still get them even though I live there? Can I deduct half the depreciation of my house because I am effectively renting half of it out? I realize you have posted questions like this before, but thought I would give it a shot as I imagine a lot of people have similar issues/questions, particularly considering that the summer intern season is upon us.”

Anyone rent out a room or a floor of their house?

‘The Post Office’ bistro Coming to 1407 T St, NW

Back in Dec. ’10 I was talking about how much I loved this building. I’m so psyched to hear of these new plans. And it sounds like the new owners are happy to talk with anyone who has concerns.

The description of the new place sounds very promising.  A recent liquor license application says:

“Casual and relaxed bistro restaurant serving an extensive Saturday & Sunday brunch with and total occupancy load of 259. Request a Sidewalk Café with 56 seats and Summer Garden with 14 seats. In addition, requesting an Entertainment Endorsement featuring recorded music and DJ.”

Sound good?

DPW to Start Charging $62.50 for Supercans and $45 each for new 32-gallon trash carts and 32-gallon recycling carts

From a DPW press release:

The DC Department of Public Works has announced that effective Monday, April 25, 2011, it will begin charging residents $45 each for new 32-gallon trash carts and 32-gallon recycling carts. The new fee is necessary to allow the Department to restock the supply of trash carts used in twice-a-week collection neighborhoods and recycling carts used citywide. DPW will continue to charge $62.50 for Supercans, the trash containers used in once-a-week collection neighborhoods.

DPW is unable to continue providing a free Supercan to new homeowners. Seniors will be required to pay the full amount for a Supercan ($62.50).

“Demand for the 32-gallon carts outstripped our ability to replenish our inventory and stay within our budget,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr. “During the previous administration, we met our budget mark for FY 2011 by eliminating $3.9 million, which included funds to replace trash and recycling containers.

“We could restore only $200,000 of that amount to purchase containers to meet the demand. No more funds are available for additional purchases.” This amount covers container requests that already are on hand.

Mr. Howland noted that requests for either of the 32-gallon containers made by midnight, Sunday, April 24, will be provided at no charge. “We also will honor senior citizens’ and new homeowners’ requests for a Supercan made before Monday, April 25.”

Requests for the containers may be made by calling 311 or placed through the DPW Web site – www.dpw.dc.gov. Residents may pay for their containers by check or money order, made payable to the “DC Treasurer,” and the address where the container is to be delivered should be written on the payment. Payments should be mailed to DPW, 2750 S. Capitol St., SW, WDC 20032. DPW advises residents that payment should be received within 10 business days of placing the request; otherwise, the request will not be filled. When that occurs, the resident should place a new request. Containers will be delivered within 10 business days after receiving payment. Once the container is delivered, residents should put their address on the side and top and record the container’s serial number to help deter theft and assist in identifying the container if it does go missing.

We recently spoke about the durability of Supercans here. Do you think the new prices seem reasonable given the budget crunch?
