Garden of the Day/Best Spot for a Morning Cup of Coffee or Mojito

A perennial favorite from the corner of 16th and V St, NW. This garden morphs and adapts throughout the warm months. We’ll be back again for another look later in the summer.

House of the Day

This house from Woodley Park might not look so unusual at first glance. But if you look closer you’ll see a line of sculptures midway up the house. I’m wondering if folks like these sculptures? And while they’re not super popular, I’ve def. seen them on a few houses. At what period did these types of sculptures become popular?

They’re def. a bit random but they’re starting to grow on me.

Checking in on 2910 Garfield St, NW in Woodley Park

This is the plot where neighbors were concerned about “No Subdivision, No McMansions”. Well the first house has been finished and the foundation has been laid for the second. How do you think the first house turned out?

Sullivans Toy Store Moving to 4200 Wisconsin Ave, NW

“Dear PoP,

I am not sure if you have ever covered Sullivan’s Toy Store. It is a great little place on 3412 Wisconsin Avenue NW. Seems mom and popish – has a good art section, toys, books, costumes, etc. I spend way too much money there…..

Well I was in there last week and they are having sales because they are moving into the space vacated by the temporary Tenley Library – near VanNess and Wisconsin. [4200 Wisconsin Ave, NW]

It is a nice place, funky folks working there, must be successful if they are moving into a bigger space – right?”

Shooting at 14th and V St, NW 2:35pm Thursday

I happened to be eating at Taco Bell on 14th and U St, NW right when this all went down. The photo above is loading one victim who was apparently shot in the leg. He was conscious at that time though I saw a nasty blood pool on the corner of 14th and U St, NW.

DCfireems tweets:

“Update – 14th & U St NW = EMS transported 2 priority 3 to area hospial – non life threatening MPD investigating”

I also tweeted from the scene @PoPville.

I spoke with a woman who was at Martha’s Outfitters at 14th and V and she said she heard 3 or 4 shots. One of the wounded then apparently walked down to 14th and U St where he was picked up by the ambulance above. The scene turned chaotic and orderly very quickly. Chaotic in the sense that all the civilians were trying to figure out what just happened and orderly because the police closed off the streets very quickly. Before I left the scene 14th St, NW was closed all the way from T Street up to W. Additionally U Street was closed between 13th and 14th.

It was eerie to see 14th St, NW closed in the middle of the afternoon:

Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

Dear PoP – HVAC Problems with a New Condo

Photo by PoPville flickr user christopher.poole

“Dear PoP,

In 2009 I purchased a brand new condo within a brand new construction in the 14th and U St area. Since the beginning I have had issues with malfunctioning HVAC units. I find this whole situation very inappropriate. I purchased a brand new apartment in a brand new building because I do not have the time or skill to have to deal with having to make repairs. I purchased a one year warranty with the apartment.

In the last month or so the builder attempted to make some repairs and in doing so damaged my floor. The entire process of trying to obtain fully functioning HVAC units has been very frustrating. What legal recourse do I have?”

Anyone ever deal with a similar situation?

I think it’s called a red bud also one of my favorites.  And I know it’s not related but I really used to love Uno and couldn’t resist the odd yet awesome shot below.

Photo by PoPville flickr user ericandkatherine

Nevermind that the list seems a bit arbitrary. Never mind that Ballston is on it. PoPville represent!

From a press release:

As Americans widely embrace the “green revolution”, residents of the greater D.C. area interested in eco-friendly living should check out the newly released Top Green Neighborhood list published by MRIS, the nation’s largest multiple listings service (MLS) which offers nearly 75,000 local homes listings via its consumer website, Homesdatabase.com.

MRIS compiled the list by collecting the most recent MLS data, and surveying local parks and area green initiatives. Based on this hyperlocal data, MRIS notes the following as the top green neighborhoods in the greater D.C. area:

* Ballston (VA)
Ballston is showing clear efforts to educate the public about environmental improvements, through its initiative to reduce emissions, and its innovation in building Virginia’s first LEED platinum house.

* Bethesda (MD)
Bethesda is home to DC’s first Passive Design House. It also has a number of green initiatives to cut greenhouse gas emissions and implement green jobs.

* Capitol Hill (DC)
Capitol Hill is abundant with green homes and buildings and offers close proximity to the city’s largest farmer’s market and famous green spaces and gardens -most notably the Botanical Gardens.

* Crestwood (DC)
Crestwood borders Rock Creek Park, which contains 1,754 acres of green space and nature-related activities. Crestwood also has a neighborhood plan to conserve and preserve their community.

* Columbia Heights(DC)

* Mount Rainier (MD)
Mount Rainier has a number of green building initiatives and projects, as well as an abundance of green space including the Mount Rainier Nature and Recreation Center.

* Old Town Alexandria (VA)
Old Town Alexandria is the home to the first LEED certified condo building in the state of Virginia. It also takes part in all of Alexandra’s green initiatives, including the Green Building Policy and the Go Green Alexandria project.

* Petworth (DC)

* Takoma Park (MD)
