“Dear PoP,
Looks like someone got new windows! What is this building? Its beautiful.”
We took an early look at this building a couple of weeks ago and learned that:
“It’s all residential, developed by the United House of Prayer.”
Do you like the multicolored panels?

“Dear PoPville,
We are trying to start a vegetable garden in our back yard. We built two raised beds for this purpose. I planted some peppers, some basil, parsley, cucumbers and zucchini. The next day I looked out the window and thought Hey, where’d the basil go? It looked like something had come along with scissors and cut the leaves off the basil and the parsley.
The next day, several leaves were missing from the pepper plants.
Last year we had cutworms eat the tomatoes, but somehow i don’t think cutworms are going to neatly snip off a couple of leaves a foot off the ground. Horticultural oil only mildly deters whatever-it-is. Birds? Squirrels? Has anyone else experienced this, and caught the plant vandals in the act?”
I was once told that Blood meal is a good deterrent. What do you guys do/use?

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this week?
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their warm wishes and congratulations sent on my wedding day. It really meant a lot to me (and the beautiful bride) and reminded me of what a great community PoPville has become. I’d especially like to thank Eric Nuzum, LoP, for his great work steering the ship earlier this week. So thanks again to everyone for their warm wishes (pictures still be worked on) and have a great long 3-day weekend!

Although many aspects of this home are not to everyone’s taste and some may seem dated, what you can’t tell from the pictures or the listing comments is that this property was immaculately maintained. The recent owner, an architect and his wife, bought the property something like twenty years ago. At prices twenty years ago, I imagine this grand corner home must have been an architect’s dream.
At the peak of the market in 2005, 2301 1st St NW, one of the grand corner houses in Bloomingdale edged into the 7 figures with a $1,050,000. purchase price. Since then, the prices for large houses along the impressive First Street NW corridor have ebbed and flowed. As Bloomingdale continues to develop in both recognition and commercial amenities, it’s not surprising that the prices are back on the rise. These are the top sellers over the past year.

A very good source shares some very sad/happy news depending on your perspective…
It is very likely that the Johnny Rockets Dupont location 1718 Connecticut Ave. NW will be closing on Tuesday.
Any Johnny Rockets’ fans?

“Dear PoP,
The Georgetown valet signs are up at 13th and U St, NW (below Boundless Yoga). It is sad to see such a beautiful and prime retail location go to a dry cleaners. The cleaners is huge and spans the entire building along u st. It even has a nice cafe area – but totally lost on a dry cleaner. Sigh. Had such high hopes for this spot.”
It is a great building that we judged back in March ’11. So let’s make this a two part question – for this specific prime location (13th and U St, NW) what do you think U Street would have most benefited by? What do you think U Street is missing in general?
I would love to see a beer garden like H St, NE’s Biergarten. Though I’m pretty excited that some skiball will be coming shortly to U Street, NW.
What would you like to see?

More good outdoor patio news – yesterday we heard about Capital City Diner’s (1050 Bladensburg Road, NE) great new patio and a couple of weeks ago Qualia Coffee launched their backyard patio at 3917 Georgia Ave, NW.
Now where the hell did spring go…? But they do look great!
