Because one royal wedding is not enough…

Kate and Will

Okay, before we really get going on my latest reign as Lord of Petworth, I’d like to take a moment to come clean on why I’m here–and why the Prince of Petworth is not.

Last night, our Prince of Petworth got hitched.

He and his brand new wife… (Well, she isn’t “brand new,” really–that would be weird, like marrying an infant or something. No, she’s been around for a few years…a bona fide adult, even.)

ANYHOW, he and his wife are taking a few well-deserved days away to contemplate what they’ve done and how they can get out of it without having to return any of their wedding gifts.

And let me answer the question about the wedding that I know everyone is wondering: Yes, I looked fantastic.

In all seriousness, the wedding was letter perfect. Despite the threat of rain on the outdoor wedding, the sun came out and it was lovely. The Prince definitely “married up,” his bride is not only one of the most charming and kind people I’ve met here in DC, but last night she looked ridiculously beautiful.

And I don’t think the Prince could have smiled any more than he did.

I think it would be great if you folks took a moment to leave the Prince and his bride a shout out in the comments. If 3,000 people can leave comments every time any PoP post mentions crime, gentrification, cats, graffiti, bad restaurant service, or teenagers–than I think you folks can knock out a quick congrats on a happy occasion.

Rejoice! The Lord has returned!

RAPTURED!
Good morning everyone!

In case you didn’t notice, the world did not end on Saturday.

Apparently, there has been some confusion.

Let me clarify:

It is, in fact, time to prepare yourselves. Time to prepare for something so awesome that it has been foretold in the Bible.

The return of The Lord.

No, actually, not that other Lord.

Me. The Lord of Petworth.

Though they had the date off by a few days. Instead of Saturday, I’m actually returning today. But no worries, I will be gone by Thursday. And don’t get any ideas. Despite what the bible says, I’m not taking any of you with me when I leave. (You should be happy about this.)

In truth, my name is Eric Nuzum. As my lovely wife will tell you, I spend far too much time writing things. I’ve spent the last few years channeling most of my writing energy into my new book, which, when released next spring, will melt your face off with its incredibleness. (You should be happy about this, too.)

However, in a moment of weakness, our beloved Prince of Petworth has, again, asked me emerge from exile to become the Lord of Petworth to fill in while he is gone. And again, in a complimenting moment of weakness, I accepted.

PoP has left a few items behind that will pop up every day–doors, coffee spots, houses, restaurants…you know the drill. It’s kinda like when Mom leaves on a trip and puts a bunch of frozen lasagnas and left-overs in the fridge for you to eat while she’s gone. But, in truth, you have no interest in Mom’s casseroles. You plan to order pizza every night.

That pizza is me.

Kinda.

Well, I think you get what I mean.

Anyhow, I’ll be in and out over the coming days. If you have anything to share with me directly–or ideas for things to write about–you can reach me at eric (dot) nuzum (at) gmail (dot) com.

Enjoy.

Bobby’s Burger Palace Coming to 2121 K St, NW

On the heels of Shake Shack opening in Dupont comes more huge burger news. Back in June ’10 I mentioned that celebrity chef Bobby Flay was looking to open some of his Bobby’s Burger Palaces around DC. Well I’ve just found the first DC proper location – 2121 K St, NW.

A recent liquor license application says:

“Top quality gourmet family burger joint featuring burgers, shakes, fries and onion rings. No entertainment or dancing. No nude performances. Seating capacity is 76. Total occupancy is 101.”

Nice!

I took a peek inside and it looks like there is still a lot of build out to be completed. Updates as construction progresses!

“Dear PoPville,

I found this yorkie yesterday afternoon running around grant circle. He’s a male yorkie with a blue harness, no collar and tag, and the microchip was not registered.

They can contact me at foundyorkiedc@gmail.com.

I know someone misses him dearly and I want him to reunite with his owners.”

The 5pm Post – Petworth (Farmers) Market Kicks off Friday, North Capitol Main Streets Fundraiser, Grey DC

Photo by PoPville flickr user dullshick

The Petworth Community Market opens today! Join us from 4 PM to 8 PM every Friday starting today, May 20, through September 30 for this popular neighborhood gathering. Pick up fresh fruits and vegetables, egss, locally roasted coffee beans, pastries, aromatic teas, grass-fed meats, artisanal breads; linger to hear the weekly music.

The Petworth Community Market runs Fridays, 4 PM to 8 PM, through September 30, along Ninth Street at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Upshur Street, NW. Special events will occur throughout the summer, including chef demonstrations, artist appearances and local musicians. On the last Friday of each month, the market will feature live music from a variety of local bands.

Fresh off last week’s successful fundraiser at Domku Bar & Café, this year’s market builds on the successes of our inaugural year by welcoming SNAP benefits recipients with an EBT Machine and an “Extra Cash” program, accepting credit card transactions, hiring a new market manager, and ensuring more convenient hours for our customers.

North Capitol Main Street is heating it up at the old firehouse!

Join us this Saturday, May 21st, from 7 to 10 PM, 1626 North Capitol Street, NW.

$25 bucks (in advance, $30 at the door) gets you awesome live jazz, wine and beer, good eats, and door prizes from some of the hot businesses in this cool part of town.

Saturday, May 21, from 12 to 4p.m, 25 vendors will test their product at an almost risk free environment during the second Grey Market held at Local 16.

Grey DC, like many renegade markets popping up in cities, is an organization dedicated to building a stronger community in Washington DC. Grey DC allows vendors an outlet who lack the commercial kitchens and licenses needed to operate elsewhere. “The goal is for people to come into the program with an idea and come out a functioning business with a strong customer base,” explains founder Maya Robinson . “I’m hoping eventually people will go on to start filling empty retail spaces in DC.”

To enter the market, patrons must sign a waiver and pay a $5 fee. Specific vendor information can be found
here.

Horse’s Ass Award Nominee Now For Sale Near U St, NW

“Dear PoP,

I emailed you about two months ago asking for information about this borderline-abandoned building, and it looks like there’s finally something going on. All of the graffiti has been painted over, and a “For Sale” sign has been nailed to a window. I can’t find a listing anywhere, but I’m hoping it goes fast and something fantastic comes in its place.”

Let’s hope the asking price is realistic!

Dear PoPville – Anyone have wireless alarm systems?

Photo by PoPville flickr user mosley.brian

“Dear PoPville,

I am currently looking to upgrade my older style ADT alarm. I want a full wireless system, including wireless video cameras for the front and rear of my property. Vivint recently stopped by and chatted with my wife and I have a friend that really likes their system, but only reviews are spotted at best.

Does anyone know of affordable local installers that have installed wireless systems that include video monitoring and remote access? Ie vivint has apps that I can check video etc remotely via iphone/bberry/computer and I’m not sure if others offer the similar abilities.

All in all, searching for security systems online is a complete pain in the rear end as none of the companies will really give you the whole story… rather they want to get to your house and cajole you into a deal. Its worse than buying a used car.

Anyway, curious if readers have similar systems to what I am looking for and if they recommend a specific installer. Also, did they pay out of pocket or get rolled into a long term, more inflated monitoring fee?”
