“Dear PoP,
I work in a building that faces the alleway behind 1737 Connecticut Avenue Northwest and for weeks now there has been some major demolition going on.
They have removed the back three floors of the building (to open up more space in the alleway possibly) and are now working on the roof. From the looks of it, they are pretty much taking the building apart. It must be a very old building squeezed between others just as old. It’d be sad to see it completely replaced.
The word is: condos. As you’ll see in the shots, I was allowed to enter in the first floor from streetside and snap some pictures. It’s being gutted (and I mean gut-ted) at the moment. It looks like they’ve started to pull the roof off now. Hopefully the rain forecasted this week won’t be a problem.”

Wild. This is the former Anna Maria space that we spoke about a couple of weeks ago. I had no idea the demo was so extensive. It’ll be interesting to see how it ends up.
Couple more closeups inside after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
Due to recent break-ins in our neighborhood like this one, we are considering door jamb reinforcement products like the “Strikemaster II” and “Door Jamb Armor” (perhaps along with a new front door). I was wondering whether your readers have any experience with those products and options for getting them installed. We’re in a historic district, so we’d need a good installer who knows how to operate with old buildings, HPRB requirements, and the like. Thanks very much!”
We spoke about some security options here. Anyone know specifically about door jamb reinforcement?

“Dear PoPville,
I am going to be moving to Washington D.C. to attend AU in August. I am looking for a one-bedroom apartment near AU that takes dogs (60 pounds) but I am not having any luck. I will be a starving student so I can’t live in the luxury buildings.
Do you have any suggestions of how I should be doing my searches on Craigslist? I am searching Cleveland Park, Friendship Heights, Tenleytown and Bethesda (but Bethesda seems to encompass a huge amount of space not near AU). I am not familiar enough with the area or the names of the neighborhoods to know what to search.”
I’d recommend you also look around the Van Ness metro station. Where would you guys suggest?

“Dear PoPville,
Not being a frequent car driver I don’t know if the signs prohibiting this are new or not, but there a two traffic operations people on foot writing tickets when people turn from H St onto 7th St in Chinatown. It’s nice to see enforcement of traffic rules as it will hopefully encourage better driving and each of the turning cars was heading into pedestrians with a walk signal, but I really hope they didn’t just put up the signs (they look rather new) and put people out to make money off those who hadn’t noticed them yet.”

“Dear PoP,
Last night around 10:30 there was apparently a drive-by shooting on Spring Rd (this is according to a neighbor who spoke with one of the police that was searching the area).”
It is unclear to me whether or not it was an actual drive by. Nevertheless, I’m told that five cars were hit with bullets but fortunately no people. MPD does have some leads on who was involved and identified all the players last night and recovered a gun in the alley. There will be enhanced patrol in this area to ensure no further incidents/retaliation.

Back in late March we learned that Robin’s Nest would be opening soon at 809 Florida Ave, NW. I stopped by last weekend and the space is now open. They are open Wed. – Fri. 1pm – 7pm; Sat. 11am – 6pm; and Sun. 1pm-4pm.
Some may recognize Robin and she used to show her stuff at Eastern Market for 12 years. In addition to her own wares, Robin’s Nest also features gently used clothing (photos after the jump.) Additionally on Sundays, Robin invites you to stop by and knit, crochet and/or do other crafts and just hang out. Craft classes will soon be offered at the end of June. Call 202-243-9505 to find out more and sign up.

More photos after the jump. (more…)

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.
A reader finds a phone, let me know if it’s yours:
“I found a rather shiny new cell phone lying on the ground at the corner of Piney Branch Parkway and Arkansas Ave NW this evening, and I suspect the owner would like to have it back. Would you be willing to run a lost-and-found thingy? It’s a T-Mobile phone and set to Spanish. I’ll hand it over to anyone who knows the color of the case and the contents of the background picture.”
