It’s in a safe and friendly neighbourhood, close to Gallaudet University, New York/Florida Metro Station, and the trendy H Street. The apartment has a washer and dryer in the unit. Dear PoP – Any Good Roof Deck 4th of July Parties?

Photo by PoPville flickr user Columbia Heights Climber

“Dear PoP,

Just curious if there has been any buzz about rooftop parties for the Fourth of July. I have been attempting to google around and search for bars etc that will be open but have been having trouble finding anything definitive. I was hoping you could put it out to the PoP readership to see where the party’s at – I’m guessing someone will have a good suggestion.”

We talked about some good places to watch the fireworks here. But does anyone know of any good roof deck parties?

Dear PoPville – Anyone have a Noseless bike seat

“Dear PoPville,
There’s been interesting some stuff on the net about nose-less bike seats:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/28/science/28tier.html?pagewanted=1&_r=3&hp
http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/blog/nsb042209_bikesaddle.html
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1743-6109.2008.00867.x/pdf

Was curious if any of your readers have gone nose-less and if so, how it was going…
Also curious if anybody has brand recs.
Some pics are attached that my housemate PJ took. He’s been seeing noseless bike seats pop up downtown by his work (10th and K, NW).

Haven’t seen any by my work yet so wondering how much the idea’s gonna take in DC.”

Big Fire on M Street at Hook Restaurant in Georgetown

“Dear PoP,

There is a huge fire at building on the 3200 block of M street in Georgetown. Tons of black smoke poring out.”

I haven’t heard anything else from DCfireems. DCfireems tweets:

“3200 blk M St NW – comm bdg – fire from roof – 2 sty – heavy fire & smoke”

Update 1:04pm from DCfireems:

“Update – near Wisc & M St – 2nd alarm comm bldg fire – bulk of fire knocked”

Does anyone happen to know what building this is?

Update 1:06pm from DCfireems:

“Update – 3241 M St NW – Hook Resturant – M St closed – no inj – bul of fire knocked, checking extension”

From a press release:

The cause of today’s fire in Georgetown behind Hook and Tackle Box restaurants is yet to be determined. It is believed that the fire started outside of Hook in the loading dock, however there are no official details as of yet. Owner Jonathan Umbel is waiting on an official investigation from the fire department regarding specific details on today’s regrettable accident.

“The most important thing to me is that our patrons and staff are safe and no one was harmed. We want to thank the DC fire department, which was quick and responsive to prevent any injuries to our staff, neighbors and diners. Unfortunately, both Hook and Tackle Box Georgetown are going to be closed for repairs indefinitely. We will be working feverishly to repair the buildings to have them open for business for our loyal patrons. During this difficult time, Tackle Box’s Cleveland Park location will be open for business and we ask our fans to support our brand so that we may be back on our feet in Georgetown soon.” – Jonathan Umbel, owner of Tackle Box and Hook.

Dear PoP – Mt. Pleasant Library Addition in Danger

“Dear PoP,

It’s not likely to happen as it would be a huge waste of money, but in DC you never know so I’m hoping you’ll spread the word. The MTP Library expansion is nearly complete. If you walk by the site you can see it has really taken shape. In fact the entire renovation is set to be complete THIS winter and yet it seems it is still mired in legal battles. Housing Complex notes that there is even a possibility that they will have to tear everything down.

I want to encourage everyone from Ward 1 to come out in support of the expansion because regardless of what your stance was before it was built, it is ridiculous to reverse course now. Initially some were against it so money could instead be allocated to building another library in ward one, but now that the expansion has been built, reversing course would result in millions being wasted and a second library would then take even longer to come to fruition. I am hoping that things are allowed to proceed and we can all meet and peruse books this winter in an expanded, inviting library. But we need to make it known that reversing course would be an extremely unpopular decision.”

We previously spoke about the Mt. Pleasant Library Renovation and Addition here and here.

Dodge City Back Patio Opens on U Street

“Dear PoP,

Just wanted to let you know that Dodge City’s back patio is open [917 U St, NW]. It is two levels and awesome. I went there just the other night and was very impressed. The owner told me that it’s still a work in progress, but it looks great as it is at this point.”

A Peaceful Place – Kahlil Gibran Memorial Garden

Since this has been such a contentious week I thought I’d share one of the most peaceful spots in DC.

Kahlil Gibran Memorial Garden is located at 3100 Massachusetts Ave, NW. The garden just turned 20 years old last month. This is a place where even mortal enemies such as bumble bees and grasshoppers get along.

The Yards/Capitol Riverfront Scuttlebutt: Molly Malone’s to open 2nd Location?

Yesterday we spoke about the huge score announced for the Capitol Riverfront area including a new Harris Teeter and seven restaurants.

Well, it looks like it’s only gonna get better. A very good source tells me that a Molly Malone’s (currently located at 713 8th St, SE on Barracks Row) and a Churchkey (currently located at 1337 14th St, NW in Logan Circle) will be announcing that they’ll be opening 2nd locations in the Boilmaker shops. I give this scuttlebutt a 72% accuracy rating. I’ll be sure to update when/if there is confirmation.

Is Capitol Riverfront going to become the next H Street, NE? I kid, I kid. But seriously are they?

UPDATE: The good people of Churchkey write:

“We will not, nor do we plan to replicate what to us is a very special and unique singular concept. What was released by The Yards developers on Monday is accurate. Neighborhood Restaurant Group will be opening a Buzz Bakery as well as a new, craft brewery in that space.”

Another Protest Group Emerges Against A New Restaurant – Tortilla Coast at 15th and P St, NW

“Dear PoP,

They’re [proposed Tortilla Coast at 15th and P St, NW] surrounded by 270 degrees of residential space. I guess everyone else in commercial areas on P St stops serving outside after dinner hours, at 9:45. This information is coming from a letter distributed by residents on 15th St, right across from the space.

So, Tortilla Coast = cool. Turning that block into Adams Morgan = not cool. One of the letter-writers said they spoke to Jim Sullivan and were basically blown off. I’m guessing they’re going to have a huge license fight on their hands.

ABRA notice says Capacity Load is 200, with 48 Exterior/Patio Seats. Sun-Th until 2am, Fri-Sat until 3am. So definitely a big change for that corner, especially given that it’s surrounded by residential.”

Do you guys think the addition of a Tortilla Coast at the corner of 15th and P St, NW will turn P Street into a new “Adams Morgan”? What do you think is a reasonable number of outdoor seats? How late at night do you think people should be allowed to sit on the outdoor patio? The OP noted that the outdoor space is actually for 48 seats (not 200 as mentioned in the letter below.)

Ed. Note: Personally, I think it’s time for people to come up with a new scare tactic. Claiming an area is going to become a new Adams Morgan has become so predictable and boring. Saying 1/4 of a thousand people may show up is much more inventive.

Maybe we should take this opportunity to brainstorm some new scare tactics for opposing new bars and/or restaurants?

Full letter referenced above available after the jump. (more…)

Sweet “Guerrilla” Firebox Art

I’m a huge fan of almost all of the official fire box art conversions I’ve seen around town. But there is something about this unofficial one that I found to be particularly beautiful. I think it’s partly because of the cool way it seems to have aged. It’s from Logan Circle.
