“Dear PoP,
I thought I’d drop you all a line and a couple photos regarding the tragic passing of a Dupont Circle neighborhood fixture – Travis Peterson. For as long as I’ve worked in Dupont Circle, Travis has sat on his crate in front of the former Johnny Rockets, wearing a Santa hat and pleasantly conversing with passersby on their commute as he panhandled.
It’s still unclear what caused his death, but notes at the sidewalk memorial state that he passed away suddenly this past Sunday. In the early evening, he was reportedly having trouble breathing and someone called 911 to request an ambulance for assistance. It is assumed that he passed away later at the hospital.
The sidewalk memorial is a touching tribute to his life – it’s evident just how much he will be missed and the many people that stopped to speak with him each day. The funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 28 at 11:00 AM. There will be a wake an hour beforehand. If anyone is interested in attending, it’s located at the Capital Mortuary at 1425 Maryland Ave NE near the intersections of H Street, Maryland Ave and Benning Road NE.”

“Dear PoPville,
I know we have talked about seafood places a few times, but I have some friends coming in for the 4th and they really want crabs. I know you can get them at the waterfront to go, but is there any place in the city to sit down and eat them? I don’t want to have to go to Maryland.”
You can get them at the Dancing Crab at 4611 Wisconsin Ave. NW. Any other good spots in the city?

“Dear PoP,
Last night my wife and I were walking through Dupont and came across a brass band playing in the intersection between PNC and Starbucks on the north side of the circle.
Good crowd around them as they played and in general they were very fun to watch and their energy was infectious. We did a little reserach when we got home, their name is the Brass Connection and they appear to be from North Carolina. I heard they were also playing the Dupont area Saturday. Anyone else see them?”

“Dear PoP,
I was walking my dog around 6:30 this morning at S and 10 when I heard a woman start screaming, “Help me, help me”. Within seconds, 5 or 6 people converged on the woman: a contractor working around the corner, a man out for a morning stroll, a few neighbors popping out of their houses (including one who was in his boxers). Apparently a dog had gotten loose and attacked her and her dog. The neighbors got the dog subdued and the woman was safe. I don’t want to downplay the attack (it didn’t look too serious), but I wanted to give props to the neighborhood. Shaw doesn’t have the most stellar reputation but it’s filled to the brim with good people. Combined with the incident on S and 8 a couple weeks ago when a neighbor scared off that man’s attackers, it’s nice to see we don’t suffer from the bystander efffect.“

The Caribbean day festival is normally one of my favorite days in DC. I am devastated by what happened late Sat. afternoon. I am also saddened by many of the generalizations made on all sides in the subsequent discussions about the violence. Having said that, the violence itself, particularly the fight on Georgia Ave near Banneker Pool has upset me more than I can properly articulate:
I need the Mayor to comment on this. Say something. Anything. Tell me you saw the clip above. Had I not been sent the clip I wouldn’t have even known it happened. This in the streets of Washington DC. Not just any street but one of our main avenues. Chaos of this magnitude can not be ignored. The Mayor’s silence terrifies me.
I believe the festival is a beautiful event. I’ve gone for many years and during the parade I have never felt an ounce of discomfort or fear of violence. During the parade. It is my deepest hope that this year’s troubles were an aberration. If we abandon the Caribbean Festival I personally believe we will be abandoning a piece of our soul, a piece of who we are. A piece of what makes us such a unique, amazing, and fun place to live. I appreciate that the Festival is not for everyone. That is fine. I’m told many residents in New Orleans actually hate Mardi Gras. But can you imagine New Orleans without Mardi Gras? For me, I can’t imagine Georgia Avenue in the summer without a Caribbean day Festival.
Mr. Mayor, just let me know that you recognize mistakes were made this year and you’ll do everything in your power to make sure they will not be repeated next year. Please.

Hahaha, I would’ve loved to have heard the pitch from the one who came up with this slightly disturbing design:

I’m hearing multiple reports of how many people were shot but it is not clear to me how many people. It seems at least one person has died but that is not confirmed. It appears that there may have been a stabbing as well. DCfireems tweets:
“update – shootings/stabbings – EMS evaluated & transportsed total 6 inj – Ga Av from 2 locations – Ga & Gresham Pl and Ga & Bryant st NW”
This happened around 5:20pm Sat. afternoon.
Will update when more info becomes available.
UPDATE:
There was a stabbing at 430pm at Georgia Ave and W St, NW with one arrest.
4 people were shot at 515pm at Georgia Ave and Gresham St, NW (one has been pronounced)
One domestic assault with arrest at 530pm at Georgia Ave and Fairmont St, NW.
There was a big fight at Georgia and New Hampshire Ave, NW in front of the CVS with one young male knocking out another.
A reader writes about the fight and sends in video:
“ran out to the balcony and saw two groups running towards cvs. guy was being beaten by two people until he lost consciousness. i called the cops, who were in the area anyway, and it looks like the victim was ok.”
The Washington Post reports:
Assistant D.C. Police Chief Diane Groomes said the shooting had no connection to the festival or the university. Investigators think it stemmed from a neighborhood issue, she said.
Three of the four shooting victims were from outside the neighborhood, police officials said.

Around midnight last night a victim was stabbed inside the bathroom at Fruit Bat located at 1236 H St, NE. The victim was quickly taken to the hospital and remains in stable condition. The suspect fled and no arrest was made. As usually happens after incidents like this, there will likely be an emergency closure of Fruit Bat. Fruit Bat will remain open during the investigation.
I don’t know anything about the victim, the assailant, or the circumstances of what/why it happened. I hope to update when more info becomes available.
