Your Afternoon Animal Fix

If you have any fun or interesting animal/pet photos please shoot me an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say what neighborhood you’re from or upload to the PoPville flickr pool with your pets name and neighborhood. I can’t guarantee I’ll get them all posted but I’ll do my best.

“Noah, from Columbia Heights, passed out after a day at the dog park in Shirlington.”

“The 71 bus missed my stop at Webster and I got off at Buchanan instead. This turned out to be serendipitous. Across the street from Flip-It Bakery, I noticed a black squirrel eating a waffle.”

“Buckley from Petworth, sitting on the vent in the Columbia Heights dog park.”

Dear PoPville – More Backyard Drain/Mosquito Troubles

“Dear PoPville,

I’m hoping there are some plumbers or engineers out there, or people who have dealt with this before, who can share their wisdom.

We live in a Petworth rowhouse, and we have a drain in our back yard. It’s fairly close to the back of the house, and the downspout from the roof appears to go into it. I always assumed that it was some kind of french drain – a french drain with problems, since there is always standing water in it. It is naturally a source of mosquitoes. We constantly throw dunks down it, spray it with cutter, etc. Our neighbors all have these drains, though, so it doesn’t make much difference.

Last week, some guys came to clean some debris out of the drain next door. My husband was chatting with them and found out that in fact it is not a french drain. The yard drain connects directly with the main sewage line in the house – the standing water is there to sort of seal off the opening and prevent nastiness from escaping. Knowing this, we want to plug the damn thing and get a rain barrel.

Two questions for the PoP community: if we just throw some gravel down there, and then top it off with cement, is that okay? I don’t want to do serious damage to something in the house. And two: is there any way to get a count of the number of these drains still in existence, as a first step to getting them abated? I think that would virtually eliminate the mosquito problem in many parts of the city. Anyone have any experience with that kind of thing?”

Dear PoPville – Practical to Own an Electric Car in DC without a Garage?

Charging Station 14th and U St, NW

“Dear PoPville,

We’re thinking about ditching our ’97 Oldsmobile. We’d love to get an electric, like the Nissan Leaf – we’ll avoid fuel costs and auto repair bills. Only one problem: we rent, and our building doesn’t have a carport or garage. So we can’t get a home charger installed.

I’ve been reading for a couple of hours now and the results seem mixed, so I’m hoping you’ll put it to blog readers: is an electric car a good idea under these circumstances? What is the public charging station situation like in DC? Anyone already have a Volt and have any experience with this?”

You can charge up at 14th and U St, NW. What do you guys think – would you get an electric car without being able to have a home charger? I guess it depends how long it takes to recharge?

Judging Restaurants/Bars – Ghana Cafe

Ghana cafe is located at 1336 14th St, NW by Rhode Island Ave (and formerly of Adams Morgan). The last few times I’ve walked by the place has been pretty crowded so I thought it was time for a proper judging. For those who are fans of the food – do you recommend any specific dishes?

You can see their menu here.

Also – do folks like this as a place to just grab a beer?

Three Robberies/Assaults Near Nationals Park After Games This Week

Photo by PoPville flickr user future pop attorney

From the MPD-1D listserv:

This incident occurred after the baseball game on Wednesday night- I have a young man staying at my place until the summer and he was terrorized by a couple of “young thugs” while walking home from the baseball game. Please see below:

“I was assaulted last night walking home from the baseball game. A group of guys tried to rob me. I took a pretty hard hit to the head. The same guys chased me to the apartment complex after I left the police station. I literally closed the gate on them. I don’t know what would have happened if I didn’t make it into the complex. I’m fine, have a pretty bad headache and a sore jaw, that’s about it. I didn’t go to work today and am getting checked out at the doctor right now just to be safe. Just wanted to let you know what happened, I’m okay- don’t worry.”

It’s very dangerous to walk home at night in this area. These young boys were hanging out at the park after they had assaulted this young man.

MPD Commander Daniel Hickson responded:

Unfortunately the SW and Nationals Park area experienced three robberies or assaults (with intent to rob) between Monday and Tuesday. The first event was a Robbery which occurred on Monday at about 10 pm in the 1100 block of New Jersey Ave SE, the second offense was the one referenced in the below email which occurred on Tuesday at about 10:25 pm in the Unit block of M St SW and the third was a robbery that occurred on Tuesday at about 11:45 pm in the 1400 block of 4th St SW. In each of these offenses, the assailants were described as a group of juvenile suspects, including 5 or more individuals.

A short time after the last robbery occurred, First District patrol officers assigned to Curfew Patrol observed several juveniles who were in violation of curfew laws. When they stopped these subjects they observed that several of them matched the description of the assailants from the Fourth St incident. The detectives were notified and subsequently two of the individuals were identified as participants in the last robbery and they were arrested.

We are investigating the strong similarities in all three offenses: time, location, method and description of assailants. The First District Detectives are conducting follow-up investigations focused on the two juveniles arrested, as well as others who were in their company. When an update is available, I will advise.
