From a press release:
Founding Farmers, the greenest restaurant in Washington, D.C., is partnering with The George Washington University to establish the largest known restaurant-owned urban apiary in the country. The restaurant installed six beehives on the roof of Lisner Hall, an academic building on the GW campus that sits just two blocks away from the restaurant.
In its first year, the Founding Farmers’ apiary may produce 10 pounds of honey per hive, but by the end of the second year, in 2012, each hive may produce between 20 and 120 pounds of honey which Founding Farmers will use on the menu at the restaurant and for small-production bottling.
In addition to creating the apiary, Founding Farmers also established a $5,000 scholarship that will be awarded to an undergraduate GW biology student who will oversee the apiary for the next year. The scholarship is the second that Founding Farmers has created for the university. Earlier this year, the restaurant awarded the first annual $5,000 Scholarship for Sustainable Hospitality, which is awarded to a student attending the GW School of Business.

“Dear PoPville,
On Tuesday evening at about 6:00 pm, I stopped in Yes! Market on Georgia Ave. to pick up a few things. There were two police cars outside, and as I entered, I noticed 4 police bicycles inside the store. As I turned the corner I saw 6 police officers congregated around the front cafe table. They looked to be having a good time, relaxing and staying out of the heat. By the time I checked out, two of the officers had left, but the other four were still chilling. I snapped a photo, but you can only see three of the officers – the other is hidden behind the officer in the all-dark uniform.
I often see officers hanging out there, but I had never seen such a large group that seemed quite settled in. This was definitely not a case of a few of them stopping in for a quick drink of water. They appeared to be quite settled in.
I think its great that there is a strong police presence at that store for the sake of keeping it open. Yes! is an important part of the Georgia Ave. rejuvenation. But it disturbed me to see this many officers there rather than on the streets. What good are cops on bikes if all they do is sit inside Yes!??? Has this ever been discussed by the community? I’ve only lived in Petworth for a year, but I KNOW there is plenty of activity for them to be monitoring in the neighborhoods. If nothing else, they could be monitoring all the commuter traffic using our neighborhood as a freeway.”
I think an officer is stationed off duty there (kinda like you see at Target.) But also on plus 90 degree days, I think it’s ok for the cops to take a break for a while. Hopefully, the breaks fall within a legit amount time.

“Dear PoP,
I was wondering if you had any information on the soccer field in Walter Pierce Park. I walked by yesterday, Monday June 20th, and noticed the large fence surrounding the field. I was wondering if they were planning on laying down new grass or any other type of renovation?”
Mindy Moretti of the Friends of Walter Pierce Park committee tells me:
“They are indeed resodding the field. They will putting some in-fill dirt in and then planting bermuda grass. They are also fixing the irrigation system, which is part of the reason they had so many difficulties with the field the first time they redid it. At this point, as far as I know, there are no plans to put a fence around it (thank goodness). According to DPR, it will be back online in spring 2012.”

About reCYCLE The Art of Bike Project:
reCYCLE Art of Bike is sponsored by the non-profit Old Takoma Business Association and was designed to celebrate the art, bicycling and recycling cultures of Takoma Park. Artists were commissioned to build seven outdoor sculptures, using mostly bicycle parts, which will be installed along the sidewalks of Old Takoma (Takoma Junction, Maryland, to the Takoma Theatre, DC) to create a self-guided walking tour with the goal of attracting and engaging visitors and showcasing Old Takoma.

Back in very early March a reader noted that GII had been closed for a while at 2632 Georgia Ave NW. I just saw some new menus and a new alcohol application has gone up on their window:

The alcohol application says:
” Neighborhood restaurant, offering American style cuisine, Entertainment to include
occasional acoustic Jazz bands, karaoke, open mike and DJ. Capacity 86 Total load 100″
I feel like I’ve been burned a few times with this place but I’m cautiously optimistic that some “acoustic Jazz bands” could be pretty cool.

And quick side note: in other Georgia Ave, NW news – Ma Ma’s Southern Cuisine located at 3118 Georgia Ave, NW is now serving Breakfast all day. Sadly they were closed at 11am on Sat. when I would’ve enjoyed some breakfast… But seriously, I’m a huge fan of breakfast all day options – I look forward to trying them out.

Any ideas why this smallish section of median between Mt. Pleasant and Cleveland Park (on Porter) is fenced off?
Seems a bit random to me. They’re not messing around either, check the barbed wire up top:

I found this wild “knit graffiti” outside the Renwick by the White House. My question is – did they bring the tricycle themselves or was the tricycle already there?

I love all the super soft ones (lamb’s ear?) that border this garden in Columbia Heights:

Unfortunately my closeups of this one from SE Capitol Hill didn’t come out well but you can see that they’ve got a great morning coffee/mojito spot:
