The 5pm Post – Become a Vendor or Volunteer for Columbia Heights Day Aug. 27

Photo by PoPville flickr user Mr. T in DC

From an email:

Columbia Heights Day is right around the corner on Saturday, August 27. But before we celebrate the fifth year (!) of what we like to think as one of the best community festivals in DC, we hope you can help us get ready for the big day. Last year more than 10,000 people stopped by the festival and 2011 will be better (and bigger) than before.

We still have a few spaces open for vendors (those who are a local business owner, part of a community group or an artist). If you’re interested in having space during the festival let us know at info@columbiaheightsday.org. Check our sponsorship form (PDF) for more information or sign-up online on our website.

We are also looking for more volunteers. Columbia Heights Day is an all-volunteer operation and we need a few dozen helping hands the day of the festival. Can you help us set-up, sell T-shirts or face paint in the Kids Zone? Contact Volunteer Coordinator Ania at aniabaca@gmail.com to help out.

Finally, we also have a 5-for-5 campaign in honor of our fifth anniversary. We are encouraging folks to donate $5 online at ColumbiaHeightsDay.org or in-person at the Columbia Heights Community Marketplace on Saturday, August 6.

Roti Coming to 1311 F St, NW This November

Roti continues it’s domination will be opening up a new location at 1311 F St, NW in the former Mix’t Greens location which closed in Feb. ’11. At that time the Downtown BID wrote:

“Mixt Greens, an eco-gourmet restaurant concept, has closed its location at 1311 F Street (NW). The restaurant had just replaced Organic to Go, which shuttered its operations nationwide to focus on its organic wholesale and catering business, last year. Mixt Greens cited “a long running dispute with the landlord” as the reason why it shut down.”

Ed. Note: Roti also just opened a location in Foggy Bottom at 2221 I St, NW.

Dear PoPville – Finding commercial kitchen space to rent?

Photo by PoPville flickr user philliefan99

“Dear PoPville,

I’m interested in starting a part time food business, however I’m having a lot of trouble finding a commercial kitchen space to rent within the district. Do you or any of your readers know of a commercial kitchen that would be willing to rent their space – preferably in the Capitol Hill / Atlas District area?”

I get this question every few months – any advice?

I can’t guarantee I’ll get them all posted but I’ll do my best.

Dear PoPville – Using a Contractor on a on a day by day basis?

Photo by PoPville flickr user ekelly80

“Dear PoPville,

I have a 15 year old row house that was poorly constructed. My first floor is sagging very badly and in danger of falling in. I’ve had an inspector come in and give me suggestions on what needs to be done to repair it.

On that note, I went on a site that’s very reputable and contacted a contractor to come in to take a look at it. After much investigating, photo taking and discussions, he suggested a price and said that it would take 5-8 days of jacking up the floor, replacing the joist hangers, nails, replacing the shoddy, weak cross beams with stronger grade beams, re-routing some of the plumbing that’s in the ceiling, etc. My basement is unfinished so you can see the sag, nails coming loose from the walls, etc. and it’s very easy to access the joists and make the repairs.

My question is this – he wants to do the job on a day to day basis, materials not included. While I would like to do the job at a set price. Does anyone in PoPville know if it’s a good idea to pay for a job like this on a per day basis? Or is it better to pay per the job? Finally, does anyone know of a good framing contractor who can repair a badly sagging floor.”

Dear PoPville – Reading and Monitoring Your Electric Meter

Photo by PoPville flickr user rpmaxwell

“Dear PoPville,

Well, it seems like a silly question, but I haven’t had to deal with this before, so I’m looking for help from the PoPville community:

I live in a large apartment building and until now utilities have been included in the rent. However as of Aug 1 we are on our own and must have an individual account with Pepco.

My question relates to the meter – I have no idea where it is – I imagine there is a meter room in the basement (?) and herein lies the problem. How does it usually work in large buildings when it comes to accessing the meter to take a reading? Call me cynical, but I have very little faith in either Pepco or the management company to do this right. What arrangement do people find works best? And are there any laws that mandate a tenant having access to the meter?

I’d love to hear your experiences.”

Operation Adams Morgan Update – Weekend Parking Restriction Lifted

Photo by PoPville flickr user Faucetini

From MPD:

MPD wishes to thank all that came out to “The District” last night to discuss the planned tactics used in enhancing the Adams Morgan area. We all feel it was very prodctive and informative across the board as was all the previous meetings that were held leading up to last night. As a result of last nights information sharing group discussion, MPD has decided to adjust the tactics utilized. MPD will no longer restrict parking in the 2300 and 2400 blocks of 18th Street on the weekends as previously laid out to all.

Are you glad parking will not be restricted? I believe the initial plan was to restrict parking after 10pm on those blocks.

We previously spoke about Operation Adams Morgan here.
