“Dear PoP,
I live on the 3500 block of 13th Street NW, and I’ve noticed that 3504 13th St NW seems to function as a guesthouse/hotel. On the weekends, there are always families coming and going, and this past week, a number of monks who were in town for the Dalai Lama event were staying there. I’ve looked all over google trying to find out more information on the property, but to no avail. Can you or your readers help me solve this mystery?”
Hmm, looks like it sold for $1,900,000 back on Oct. 30, 2009. Anyone know if they are a hostel/hotel? Maybe some residents are doing airbnb or a similar service that we talked about yesterday?

“Dear PoPville,
I passed this guy this morning around 8:20 at the intersection of 11 & H St NW. It looked like he was either dancing or hopping around in circles in the middle of the intersection. The back of his shirt said “Race Staff”. Does he have a death wish? Was he trying to publicize something? What was he doing?”
Is this the “exercise guy”? Anyone else see him around town?

“Dear PoP,
Interesting hit and run in the 300 block of Rock Creek Church Road Nw this morning. Witnesses heard a crash and saw the driver of the vehicle trying to leave the scene. The driver was traveling uphill (northeast) along Rock Creek Church Rd, crossed the yellow line, and smashed into vehicles parked on the other side. Once the driver saw he had an audience, he got out of the vehicle and walked away. Described as a Hispanic male wearing blue shorts.
If anyone saw anything or anyone suspicious this am hiding or seemed out of place, please contact MPD.
Parked cars were removed via tow truck.”

From MPD:
At approximately 7:50 PM today [Wednesday] a citizen was on the Metro Bus at South Dakota Ave NE Galloway St. NE when a young juvenile male approached her and snatched her bag from her. The subject jumped off the Metro Bus with a female companion but was pursed by three female citizens who followed them to South Dakota and Kennedy Street NE area, where they flagged down a Park Police officer. Simultaneously, Fourth District Officers Kiel and Clayton Smith were on patrol canvassing for the suspects and spotted them as well. Officer Kiel advised the Park Police Officer to hold the suspects for further investigation.
A positive identification was made on the two suspects. The stolen property was recovered and returned to the victim. The victim was not injured in this robbery. It was learned that two other citizens also followed and assisted in identifying both suspects.
Due to the great assistance by the five involved citizens from the community, the outstanding coordination between all three Police agencies and of course our own Fourth District Officers Kiel, Smith and Copeland, two individuals were arrested and removed from the streets.
Outstanding work and coordination by all involved!!!

“Dear PoP,
Given recent discussions about crime, police, city life, etc. I was particularly impressed by the use of police resources I observed yesterday around 5:45 pm at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and K Street. There were two DC cops standing in the median ready to ticket jaywalkers. A picture is attached. Is jaywalking really that big of a problem?”
While I think two police officers might be excessive, I actually don’t have a problem with one officer giving jaywalking tickets. This intersection can actually be rather dangerous and pedestrians do occasionally get hit and injured by cars (sometimes car at fault, sometimes pedestrian at fault.) Even though I admit I jaywalk from time to time and would be pissed if I got a ticket – in this case I think the officers are doing the right thing. If there was serious violent crime taking place in this police district I might feel differently.

Dos Gringos is located at 3116 Mt. Pleasant St, NW. We’ve spoken about them before but I’m hearing mixed reviews on the ice cream option beneath the cafe. So how’s the ice cream?

Capital City Market is located at 6th and Florida Ave, NE. This huge news came from the Washington Post yesterday:
Richard Brandenburg, 37, has been hired by Edens & Avant, the giant East Coast real estate development company, to serve as its first director of culinary strategy.
Much of the chef’s focus will be on rethinking Capital City Market in Washington. Brandenburg hopes to stock the wholesale-retail center with multiple restaurants, a culinary school, even a USDA hub — “a fun mix,” he says. One of the models for the complex, which will bring together restaurants and distributors, is the esteemed, community-minded Ferry Plaza Farmers Market in San Francisco.

“Dear PoP,
The other day I was walking w/ my kids & some friends in the Melvin Hazen tributary of Rock Creek Park (at Tilden & Reno). My 5 yr old spotted this bug and we all came over to check it out. We’d never seen a bug so big and blue in the park! Then, as we got closer to take pics, we realized it wasn’t real! Somebody made a gorgeous wire bug and glued it to the rock. It made my day! Awesome idea for urban art.

From an MPD press release:
After a long series of planning and collaborative sessions with the citizens and businesses of Adams Morgan, the Adams Morgan BID and various concerned stakeholders that provided information by either telephone or internet, MPD has announced the start of the first phase of “Operation Adams Morgan”.
Over the next few weekends, MPD will deploy more officers and resources into the Adams Morgan area then seen in many years. This will be completed without affecting the deployments of any other community.
The initial phase will begin this weekend with minor parking restrictions along 18th Street and gradually progress into a full compliment of uniformed and undercover officers conducting various operations while teaming up with several city agencies (DPW, DDOT, ABRA) in addition to members of The Guardian Angels. The collaborative effort will target underage drinking, drunk driving, alcohol and narcotic related offenses as well as many quality of life issues and concerns.
Phase one of “Operation Adams Morgan” will continue until later this year when MPD’s redistricting program is implemented and places additional manpower and available resources evenly across the entire patrol district.
The Metropolitan Police Department want to thank all that took part in the brainstorming and strategic planning stages of this endeavor and will stay committed to ensurung we are all working towards achieving a safer community for all.
Personally I think this is a great thing for Adams Morgan especially after seeing how out of control things can get.
Though, out of curiosity, I’d be interested to learn how they are able to implement such an operation while it “will be completed without affecting the deployments of any other community.”
