You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.

Last week we learned that Union Station Wine & Liquor had closed. A twitter follower mentioned that they heard it was going to move downstairs in the former pharmacy space. So I’ve got a bit more info to share. The former Pharmacy space downstairs is going to become the Post Office. The Post Office space upstairs is slated to close (next to the already closed Wine & Liquor space.)

Soon to be a “French Sandwich Shop”
I asked a guy who worked nearby and he said it was going to be a French sandwich shop. I asked if he was referring to Pret a Manger but all he could say was a French restaurant with lots of sandwiches. There is already an Au Bon Pain so I couldn’t think of any other French sounding options. So stay tuned for who will fill the space. Back to Wine & Liquor he said, he also heard it would be moving downstairs but he didn’t know the exact location.

Thanks to all the readers who forwarded this email:
Caribbean Carnival, a cultural festival that has been happening annually for 19 years, was enjoyed by many thousands this year, but was also the subject of much debate. The shortened route, financial issues, and aggressive police tactics sent mixed messages to Carnival organizers and the community. Several fights that occurred raised safety concerns from the community. Councilmember Graham, Councilmember Bowser, the MPD and the Mayor’s office have publicly expressed their desire to see the Carnival continue and the full route restored but there are serious issues that must be overcome.
The Georgia Avenue Community Development Task Force has invited Councilmember Jim Graham (on travel but sending a representative), Councilmember Bowser (unconfirmed), MPD Chief Lanier (confirmed), and DC Caribbean Carnival Director Loughton Sargeant (confirmed) to our next meeting on Wednesday July 27th at 6:00pm at the G II Restaurant and Lounge at 2632 Georgia Avenue (corner of Georgia and Fairmont) to discuss the issues that occurred at this event and ways the community can be more involved in its planning and execution.
For background on some of the issues regarding this year’s Carnival, you can listen to a Town Hall meeting on the Carnival conducted Saturday July 16th broadcast live on WPFW. The archived show can be heard by going here and scrolling down to “Caribbeana” broadcast on Saturday, July 16, 2011 7:00 pm. The Town Hall was hosted by WPFW’s Gloria Minott, with panelists Paul Quander, Deputy Mayor of Public Safety and Justice, Councilmember Bowser, Councilmember Graham, MPD Assistant Chief Lamar Green, Claude Barrington of the DC Caribbean Carnival and others.

425 11th Street, NW, a former Ritz Camera, has been vacant for a long time. I always thought neighboring Central would expand into the space. Turns out a new liquor store, The Local Vine Cellar Market & Tasting Room, hopes to take over the space.

Last summer I wondered what beautification project was coming to the vacant lot at 1st and N St, NW. Looks like a pretty significant building is going up. I’ll update when the project is completed and/if they go on the market for sale or as rentals.

“Dear PoPville,
I wonder if your readers have ideas for local gifts to bring out-of-towners when I’m visiting. What foods, crafts, or whatever will impress non-DC folks with their unique DC-ness? (I’d prefer things that are not political, so Obama bobbleheads are out.)”
How about Eastern Market?

“Dear PoPville,
I keep seeing dead birds on the street. Not chickens or roosters, but regular birds. I live on Ogden and I see the dead birds on Center, Oak, and Hertford while I’m walking my dog. I keep wondering, is somebody with a bb gun shooting birds? Do they eat rat poison and fall out of the sky dead? Victims of low rainfall and high heat?”
Anyone else noticing an increase in dead birds around town? Any guesses as to the cause?
