Dear PoPville – Rats in my Car Engine!

Photo by PoPville flickr user philliefan99

“Dear PoPville,

I have a rather gross question for your readers. Has anyone had an issue with rats in their car engine? I am not talking about chewing wires, which seems somewhat common, but getting caught in moving parts and causing lots of damage (drive belt, timimg belt, tensioners etc). This has happened twice now, within a couple months. The first time was bad enough but after the second time I am wondering if the dealer’s service center is being less than honest since the car is still under warranty. If it happened to me twice it has to have happened to someone else, right? I can deal with rats in the alley but I can’t shell out thousands of dollars on repairs every year! Just curious, either way I am parking on the street from now on.”

Matchbox Coming to 14th and T St, NW

From a press release:

The matchbox food Group is fired up to announce their latest expansion plans! Diners will soon be able to enjoy the group’s first and most successful concept to date, matchbox, at the corner of 14th Street and T Street NW. The group, whose history dictates its expertise in finding the next hottest neighborhoods in the district, has just signed a lease with real estate developer JBG. With the approval of all necessary licenses, this will mark the 3rd matchbox location in DC and the 5th nationwide.

“We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to expand into the growing 14th Street Corridor,” said Ty Neal, principal partner of the matchbox food Group. “Washington, DC has been our home since 2003 with our first location in Chinatown, then Capitol Hill, followed by Rockville. In 2012, our sights are set on the Logan Circle area and Merrifield, Virginia. We are so grateful for the people of greater Washington and how they have embraced us, our food, and our restaurants. ”

The group has plans to renovate the building that has had a rich history of former occupants. The turn of the century construct has housed a bowling alley, jazz club, and most recently has been home to Arena Stage’s rehearsal hall. Signature design features that diners will be sure to see in the restaurant will be multiple levels, rustic barn wood, architectural staircases and of course the “matchbox” a seating area that first appeared in the Capitol Hill location. This wooden box can seat 6-8 people and has become a highly requested table for those who want to see and be seen!

Dear PoPville – Help Save DC’s Cathedral Care Pharmacy

“Dear PoP,

I’m writing to you in hopes of getting some support for a local small business that is being forced out. Mike Madden is the owner of Cathedral Pharmacy located at 3000 Connecticut Ave. across from the Zoo. It’s been an ongoing battle of CVS trying to force him out of business. Now it’s down to the wire and Mike needs petition signatures in order to try and save his business. It only takes a second, and with the help of all the awesome PoP readers I think Mike could get the signatures he needs.

Here is the link to the petition, Save DC’s Cathedral Care Pharmacy.

The McMillan Filtration Site

A reader writes simply: “we made a short film starring The McMillan Reservoir.”

Not sure how they got in but this is really a beautiful video. On Friday when we talked about neighborhood names, a reader asked what neighborhood McMillan Reservoir (Filtration Site) would be referred as when it gets developed? I still think it’ll be called Bloomingdale.

McMillan Filtration Site is located at Michigan Avenue, North Capitol Street, NW.

Over/under on when construction will start?

Home Projects in PoPville – Vol. 27

“Dear PoP,

Here are some pics of the roof deck we just finished in the bloomingdale/truxton area. it provided a GREAT view of both the main fireworks show a few weeks back and the local show that was poppin on our street corner all night on the 4th.”

Looks awesome! Def. a best spot for a morning cup of coffee and/or mojito contender.

If anyone else has a renovation project they’d be willing to share send a few before and after photos to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com and if you’d be willing please share a rough cost estimate and what contractors/materials were used.

Kushi (Temporarily?) Closed in Mt. Vernon Square

A reader sent in word late Friday night that Kushi had closed with the above note posted the door. Not sure how fast tax problems can be cleared up/resolved but The Triangle notes that Kushi’s twitter feed says:

“Hello friends! Kushi is taking the weekend off and will be closed until early next week.”

Kushi is located at 465 K St, NW and we judged them to mostly positive reviews back in March ’10. I’ll be sure to update when they reopen.
