If you have any fun or interesting animal/pet photos please shoot me an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say what neighborhood you’re from or upload to the PoPville flickr pool with your pets name and neighborhood. I can’t guarantee I’ll get them all posted but I’ll do my best.

Dear PoPville – Requesting a Tree Box?

“Dear PoPville,

We live in a row house on 4th St NW in LeDroit Park. One of the things we love about LeDroit is the amount of trees and greenery, including numerous tree boxes on the sidewalks. However, our section of 4th St is actually fairly bare with few trees or other greenery. Is it possible to request that the city installs tree boxes on our block? What would we need to do? We would be willing to maintain them ourselves – and even possibly pay for the installation – but obviously we can’t just start ripping up the sidewalk and putting in plants ourselves! Would appreciate any advice others might have.”

Dear PoPville – Dumpster Fine

Photo by PoPville flickr user Mr. T in DC

“Dear PoPville,

Today I received an email from my landlord with a forwarded message from an apartment complex that shares the alley. Last week I threw away an oddly shaped box in the apartment’s dumpster after trying to fit it in my trashcan. Apparently, the building manager took my name and address off of the box and filed a complaint with the city. The building manager sent an email to my landlord that basically said I should expect a $500 fine. Have any other readers had experiences like this? Is disputing the fine an option? Any advice? I understand paying a fine for using a dumpster that isn’t mine, but $500 seems pretty steep for one box! Thank you.”

Judging Bars – RFD

RFD is located at 810 7th St, NW in Chinatown. I’ve heard really really mixed reviews of RFD – some absolutely love and some feel it is a bit generic feeling. You can see their famous beer list here and menus here. What’s the final word?

Dear PoP – Reply from Giant Consumer Affairs

Photo by PoPville flickr user rosiedawn

“Dear PoP,

I dropped a dime to Giant and linked your post about their continued crappy service at the Tivoli in Columbia Heights. I thought it was more than the standard response. I hope others did the same.
Stay high and dry”

We’ve visited this block fairly recently in Popville as you can see from this photo of the subject house with a raging fire across the street, and for a recent Good Deal or Not Revisited. I’m pleased to report that the home that had the devastating fire earlier this year has been gutted and stabilized. Hopefully, re-building will commence soon.

Miss Pixies Moving From Logan Circle in 2012!?!?!

Back in April ’08 Miss Pixies moved into the old Powell’s Auto Parts Shop at 14th and R St, NW. In a Washington Examiner article lamenting the closing of Ruff n Ready up the street at 14th and T St, NW, a troubling tidbit is buried at the end of the article:

Pixie Windsor, who has run Miss Pixie’s furniture store down the street for almost four years, is preparing to move. Her lease runs out in March, and the rent will rise. “We come in and make a place cool and popular,” she says, “then they kick us out. That’s the way it works.”

Columbia Heights Day Cancelled

Photo by PoPville flickr user Mr. T in DC

Dang. This sucks!!!

Thanks to all for sending emails:

“It saddens us to say, due to circumstances beyond our control, the 5th Annual Columbia Heights Day Festival is cancelled. Many of the companies and services that we rely on to present the festival are unable to perform their contracted duties for us, due to the potential of extreme weather. We sincerely apologize for the last minute notification, but our decision to cancel the festival is based on information provided to us this morning.

We are in the process of reaching out to all festival participants to make them aware of the event cancellation. Over the coming days, we will be answering specific questions from individual people and organizations regarding this situation. Until then, we thank you in advance for your patience as we sort through the logistics; please stayed tuned to our Facebook and Webpage for updates.

Thank you everyone to who came yesterday or who helped leading up to the festival. :) I will be in touch with all of you about the festival next year.

It would be great if everyone could get the word out about the festival being cancelled. We don’t want people showing up. Please tweet, facebook etc about it.”

Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

Photo by PoPville flickr user yostinator

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.

We reunited a camera with its owner earlier in the week, so let’s see if we can go 2 for 2. If these are anyone’s keys or you recognize them please email me at princeofpetworth(at)gmail and I’ll put you in touch with the OP. Thanks.

“Keys found in Thomas Circle (Vermont and M) at 9:20 am this morning. It’s two Honda keys, a bike key, a capital bike share, washington sports club, Montgomery County Public Library and other things on the key, and a red strap. I could probably figure out the name by getting the library card scanned or whatever, but figured I’d go here first, since they’re probably nearby.”

Ed. Note: Just a reminder that I’m continuing Operation Restore Civility to the comments section. Please don’t make an awesome point then end it with – “you fucking idiot.” Because then I have still have to delete the comment. Disagree, debate, argue just don’t get personal. No more insults. No more poison. No more trolls. Thanks for understanding.

Friday Question of the Day – Watching Football at Bars? (reader request)

Photo by PoPville flickr user Faucetini

“Dear PoPville,

I figured you had a great venue for discussing sports bars in the area and specific bars for various teams. It seems that with Blue Banana, Lou’s Etc opening in the area there might be some opportunity to make a bar a destination for fans.”

Back in Oct. ’09 a Seahawks fan wrote in to find out where all the Seahawks fans watch games in DC. Washingtonian has a good list of where various NFL fans watch games. So I guess with new bars opening and football season around the corner – the last fun Friday Question of the Day for August will be a two parter.

With new bars opening up – who do you think they will be affiliated with? Who do you think they should be affiliated with? Or does that just happen in an organic way?

And more generally, where do you watch your teams play – both college and NFL football?

As a newly converted Redskins fan (long story that I’ll address in a separate post) – Where is the best bar to watch Washington play?
