Dear PoPville – Fashion One Closing on H Street NE?

Photo by PoPville flickr user philliefan99

“Dear PoPville,

On my way home yesterday I saw that Fashion One, located at 700 H Street had Going out of business signs on it. Has this been in the works for a while? Does anyone know what might be going in that space?”

Anyone hear any scuttlebutt for the plans here?

Oh, that’s what its called? I thought it was called “Statehood Now” from the expensive sign out front.

  • Prince Of Petworth

I was just able to chat with them on the phone and they said they have lost their lease. Not sure when their last day is and not sure what the future plans are.

What’s going to go in that space? Hmmm. Let’s see. H St. NE. Hmmm.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say a bar/restaurant catering to the new demographic.

Thankfully there is real neighborhood-serving retail moving into the strip as well. A new bike shop and a veterinary hospital, for starters.

Sad to see a business close, but it would be interesting to get more information on how much the landlord wants. Is this another example of what happened to Miss Pixies (that is, a landlord wanting exorbitantly high rent)?

      • Marcus Aurelius

By definition, it’s not “exorbitantly high” if there exists one person who will pay it.

          you need a dictionary.

          • Marcus Aurelius

            Good suggestion.
Exorbitant, according to Webster’s Dictionary: 1) not coming within the scope of the law; 2) exceeding in intensity, quality, amount, or size the customary or appropriate limits.

I could be wrong but: 1) I am not aware of any law that limits the rent on commercial spaces. Not being able to afford a particular rent doesn’t make that rent illegal. I submit that no one would pay an amount of rent that was illegal. 2) Appropriate is a subjective judgment. If someone is willing to pay the rent being asked, the rent is appropriate . . . for them.

I predict more retail is headed to H street! Furniture stores and higher end clothing stores.

Another BOB (black owned business) bites the dust….oh well.

I think this street needs another Italian ice joint

The are closing Fashion One and upgrading it to a Dress Barn. :)

  • We can only hope Fashion One will be replaced by Fashion Two.

Maybe a good place for the “old” Hawk n Dove?

  • ER

I went in there today and one of the employees said they’re leaving at the end of October. She didn’t say what was going in…but the place is massive and it even has a basement floor that’s full of clothing racks.
