Fiesta DC’s Latino Festival will be taking place this Sunday September 25, 2011 12PM-7PM. on the 3000-3300 block of Mt. Pleasant St. NW.
You can see some photos from last year’s festival, here.

Avenue Cafe is located at 1501 Rhode Island Avenue NW and is part of the Holiday Inn. I can’t imagine this would be too many people’s first choice for the Logan area but I’m just curious if anyone has stopped by to try out the BBQ menu?
This one actually first caught my attention because I thought it was advertising a happy hour at the breakfast buffet starting at 6:30am. Reading comprehension has never been my greatest strength…

Back in late Aug. we learned that Shaw’s Tavern would be closing at 520 Florida Ave, NW until they got a liquor license.
On the Shaw listserv this morning the CCCA President wrote:
“StevenMay of #ShawsTavern walked passed the casa and told me the jont may reopen as coffeehouse w/o ABRA license. They r working on sidewalk”
I thought Mr. May was no longer affiliated with the project but maybe he heard some scuttlebutt? As of 11am there was no update on Shaw’s Tavern facebook page.
Do you think Shaw’s Tavern reopening as a coffee house would be a good idea?

“Dear PoPville,
This van has been broken down in front of my house at 11th and Girard for four days now. Aside from the fact that I worry some creepy, mustachioed man is going to hop out and start offering the neighborhood eight-year olds candy, the thing is in a “No Standing Anytime” bus zone. You’d expect MPD to be all over towing that thing, given parking enforcement is something – one of the few things – they do on a consistent, predictable basis. But, you’d be wrong. We’ve called the cops twice; they’ve come, poked around with their flashlights, and left without doing anything. Not even a parking ticket. Oh, and what about the hand-written, paper license plate? Nothing suspect at all…”

“Dear PoPville,
I just wanted to share a story of heroism from the other night.
As I was closing up at my job in Woodley Park, around 9pm, I set my bike outside and went back inside to set the alarm. 30 seconds later, I was back outside and my bike was gone. Panicing, I call my boss, then 911. About 10 minutes later, I’m on the phone with my boyfriend when I see a man ride by on my bicycle. I dropped the phone and ran down Calvert Street towards Connecticut Avenue, chasing him and yelling for him to drop the bike. Soon, about 17 pedistrians and restaurant patrons followed, running across the street after the thief. Part of this pack was a man on his own bicycle. The thief turns and rides down the grassy hill into Rock Creek Park, and the man on his bicycle follows him. After about 5 minutes, my hero walked out of the park with his own bike under one arm, and mine under the other. After debriefing with the cops, I learned that my hero was Dave, and he is a station tech for Capital Bikeshare.
Dave is amazing, as are the other folks from the Woodley neighborhood who jumped in to help stop the thief. Thanks to all of the good people in this great city who go above and beyond to help a stranger. Special props to Bikeshare for hiring such an awesome guy.
Side note: During the reporting after my bike was recovered, the police received 2 more calls about bike thefts within the neighborhood. Not sure what this is about, but clearly someone is after bikes in Woodley. Keep your bikes locked!”

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.

This is gonna be freaking awesome. From a liquor license application:
“This is a tavern that has a ramen shop on the ground level. Diners will be able to order bowls with a variety of fresh toppings. The second level will serve as a bar & restaurant with a Japanese menu.
HOURS OF OPERATION
Sunday through Thursday 11 am – 3 am Friday and Saturday 11 am – 4 am”
Washingtonian has some good details:
“On the ground level, there’ll be a ramen shop inspired by those in Sapporo, one of the Japanese cities famous for the dish. Utagawa will serve three styles of the broth-based soup: miso, soy-sauce-anchored shoyu, and shio or salt—which has a pale color and more-delicate flavor.
Another traditional touch: The ramen shop will be meant for slurping noodles not sipping drinks. “Eating ramen isn’t a very social thing,” says Utagawa. “You look at your bowl and eat, otherwise the noodles get soggy.” For socializing, diners can head upstairs to the izakaya, which will serve as both bar and restaurant.”
Daikaya will be located right next to the super popular Graffiato at 705 6th St, NW.

“Dear PoPville,
About a week ago there was a fire at Corado’s in Mt. Pleasant that closed the store. Do you have any new information since the fire?”
This fire happened when I was away on vacation but I spoke with some folks on the block who said that Corado’s is planning on reopening. Though it is not likely that will happen before 3-4 months. Anyone else hear of their plans?
We judged Corado’s, located at 3217 Mt. Pleasant Street, NW, back in Jan. ’10.

“Dear PoP,
Snapped this picture of our garden yesterday morning after placing the scarecrow out as a sign of ushering in Autumn
Feels like Autumn but plants are definitely still in good shape after all the rain!!! Picture is of our home in NE.”
Beautiful.

One of my favorites from Capitol Hill. Very detailed stained glass:

This whole row from Riggs Pl, NW off 18th Street is ridiculously awesome. I’d put it up as one of the coolest rows of houses in the country.

Thanks to all for sending emails about the new Dry Cleaners coming to the old Streetscape Office on Mt. Pleasant Street next to Samber Market.

Thomas Circle 1921-22 via Library of Congress
“Dear PoPville,
Just thought you might appreciate this picture of Thomas Circle (circa 1921/1922) that I came across in the Library of Congress Archives. I found the detail so remarkable that I decided to spend some time restoring the original high-res file. Notice the streetcars running up and down 14th Street without overhead wires. I believe they drew power from a third line buried between the two main tracks. In the large version you can also make out that 1325 14th St. used to be a home supply store of sorts.”
Awesome!

From an email:
“On sept. 1st I adopted a dog from the Washington Humane Society. Yesterday evening, I was buying food/brush/treats for him only to find out he was stolen!!!!!! Im heartbroken, he is a sweet boy that was just beginning to brighten up after two months at the shelter (and if you ask my friends, we were crazy in love already). Two people saw a guy taking him on his bike from the 17th and Corcoran Safeway entrance.
Im doing everything possible to find my sweet boy. I reported this to the police and Washington Humane Society and have already posted over 50 posters in the area in case he fell from the bike and ran.
Im begging for help from each of you, I will be really grateful if you help me spread the word by posting the attached poster in a visible spot around your place, Im not sure in which area of the city he is and anything could help. If you could also forward the message below to the people you know in DC/Mayland/Virginia… I dont know, I just want to exhaust all the options available. Maybe somebody recognize him and report it.
Thank you for your help!!!!!!!!! I really need it!”
