Judging Restaurants – Old Europe

Old Europe is located at 2434 Wisconsin Ave NW. Their Web site says:

“Since opening its doors in 1948, Old Europe Restaurant has become a true landmark in Washington D.C. It enjoys a reputation as one of the finest restaurants in the nation’s capitol. Old Europe is recommended by Zagat’s, AAA, Mobil Travel Guide, Washingtonian Magazine and many local newspapers. The Lichtenstein family opened the Old Europe with the idea of serving delicious European cuisine, offering the best international wines, and serving great German beer. In the early 1970′s Karl Herold took over the reigns of Old Europe after working with the Lichtensteins for 10 years.”

You can see their menus here.

Any fans?

Dear PoPville – Help with Registration Process for Performing a Wedding

Photo by PoPville flickr user Mylar Bono

“Dear PoPville,

I know this is a strange question, but my fiance and I are in a predicament, and we were hoping you could help. We are planning on getting married October 15th and a friend of ours is hoping to officiate. He is registered with the Universal Life Church (the internet church) and performed a friend’s marriage in Rhode Island. We checked with the DC Marriage Bureau and he needs to register in DC in order for it to be legit. Unfortunately, the registration process is quite in depth and he would have to provide documentation on his church, his congregation, how he is paid to be a minister…etc.

Since he only became “ordained” in order to perform the marriage, he obviously doesn’t have this sort of back up documentation. The only other option we have is we get a minister who is registered in DC to endorse him (by signing off on his application form). Is anyone a Universal Life Church minister registered in DC that would be willing to endorse our friend (and kinda fast too). Can anyone help?”

If anyone can help please with an endorsement please email me and I’ll put you in touch with the reader.

Random Reader Rant and/or Revel

Photo by PoPville flickr user philliefan99

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.

Rant: 3rd and 21. It was freaking 3rd and 21…
Revel: Nats improving.

A reader writes:

“Found an ipod this morning on Holmead, near Oak. Actually ON Holmead. It’s lucky it wasn’t smushed. If the ipod-dropper wants to provide some identifying info (such as the first three bands, alphabetically (or something)), I’d be happy to reunite them.”

If you think this is your ipod email me and I’ll put you in touch.

Dear PoPville – Playbill Cafe Closing at the end of the Month in Logan

“Dear PoPville,

I heard from a friend of mine who’s a regular there that Playbill Cafe on 14th St, which has been around as long as I can remember, is closing at the end of this month! It’s never super busy, but it had a good vibe and that was one of the things that I liked about it. I know they also sometimes hosted live touring shows in the back. He said he thought they were looking to re-locate.

I wanted to let you know that I got confirmation from one of the bartenders Friday night that Playbill IS closing at the end of the month. He said that they are looking for a new location but haven’t found one yet.”

1409 Playbill Cafe is located at 1409 14th St NW (near 14th and P St, NW.) The Post had an article late last week:

While an opening date and location have yet to be determined, Manour assures that the re-opening of the restaurant will be before the end of the year. They are looking at locations around U Street or possibly Arena Stage. They have “three options” as to where they will move the new restaurant, but “haven’t decided yet” on a new location, and will make a decision “very shortly,” Mansour states. “I hope the place we will get will be the same handsome place like we have now.”

They say to check in on their Facebook page to hear where/when the new place will open.

For those who are fans – do you think they’ll be able to keep the same vibe in the new location?

Georgetown Waterfront Park Completed and Completely Awesome

Back in Jan. ’09 I suspected that the Georgetown waterfront park was going to be sweet. Well, it has been completed and it is indeed totally freaking sweet. Best new park to hit DC since Yards Park by Navy Yard.

I hit it on a cloudy day but you can imagine how insanely awesome it’ll be on a sunny day.

I love how it goes all the way down to the water in one section:

I always love passing this one in Woodland-Normanstone. I imagine it is one of the more peacefully located homes in the whole city.
