“Dear PoPville,
What’s the deal here? It’s been going like this for hours and possibly over a day. Can they not stop it? Last night N St. was starting to flood. Didn’t have a chance to check it out this morning, but hopefully it has stopped. There must be a reason but still seems so wasteful.
Photo is facing west on N from 15th toward Scott Circle.”
A few folks have been inquiring as to what’s going on here. Thanks to DC Water’s Alan Heymann for the quick response:
“Thanks for asking!
We have a leaking 72-inch water main at the location your reader pointed out. To fix the leak, our crews must turn off water service to the pipe and drain it. As you can imagine, a pipe that is large enough for most people to stand up inside can hold quite a bit of water. So yes, this is intentional and we’re draining many, many gallons.
It may appear that this work is a waste of water. On the other hand, an unrepaired leak on a 6-foot water main could lead to a break, which could disrupt water service, cause property damage or lead to even more loss of water from the system.
Good question… please keep them coming.
Your readers can always feel free to reach out to us directly by phone at (202) 612-3400, by email at twitter@dcwater.com, or on Twitter, @dcwater.”

“Dear PoPville,
What do you know about the raid at Capitol Hemp in Adams Morgan last night? I was walking on Adams Mill around 7pm last night when I saw about 15 cops in bulletproof vests. I later saw the cops pulling people out of the store in handcuffs. At one point there was a helicopter flying above with the spotlight on the back of the store. The word on the street was that it was a drug raid of sorts… Do you know anything more about this?”
Capitol Hemp’s Adams Morgan location is located at 1802 Adams Mill Rd, NW. Their Web site says:
“Capitol Hemp is proud offer unique clothing and accessories for women and men made from earth’s greatest natural fiber, industrial hemp.
In addition to clothing, Capitol Hemp offers a wide variety of products made from hemp including soaps, lotions, paper, non-dairy milk, shoes, original works of art, and much much more.
Capitol Hemp also sells orignal works of art by local numerous artists as well as hand blown glass tobacco pipes and vaporizers. If you would like to view photographs of these products, please click here to certify that you are at least 18 years old.”
I have confirmed that an arrest was made but I’m trying to get more details of what actually happened. I’m told that the investigation is ongoing so very little info is available at the moment.
UPDATE From MPD:
“There were search warrants served at 2 area Capitol Hemp Stores
1800 block of Adams Mill Road
4 arrests and drugs and drug paraphernalia recovered500 block of H St NW
3 arrests and drugs and drug paraphernalia recovered”

“Dear PoPville,
I was walking north on 14th between R and S St, NW tonight [Wed.] around 9:30 PM. A girl was walking towards me, and behind her were two boys, flanking her on either side but at a slight distance. They both wore hooded black sweatshirts, and one had what looked like a black turtleneck pulled up to his nose. Both were African-American and could not have been more than 13 years old. They started to increase their pace, but then they noticed me, and kept walking. I slowed down, silently checked in with the girl, who switched her direction and asked if she could walk with me. The two boys followed us for a block before disappearing. Definitely strange and unsettling, especially because it was right on 14th St, which is well lit and certainly not desolate on a weekday evening. She called 911 and within two minutes I saw police cars heading in that direction.”

“Dear PoPville,
I was sitting on the Blue line this morning [Wed.] heading downtown from Potomac Ave when I witnessed an iPad snatch and grab. At a stop when a train was across the platform (I think Fed Center SW but I was too startled to pay attention), a young kid got out of his seat and slapped an iPad out of a woman’s hands who was sitting a couple rows ahead of him. He then picked it up and ran across the platform to the other train. Someone by the door grabbed his sweatshirt, but he got away. It all happened very fast and right before the doors closed.
This isn’t news to anyone, and I think there are still ads on the metro about protecting your stuff, but people should be really careful, especially when sitting on the aisle. It was all too easy for him to get the iPad out of her hands, and they’re a lot harder to hold onto than than a smartphone.
He amusingly dropped an iPod or a smartphone which was given to the victim. Hopefully the cops should be able to figure out something from that so later we can hear about the dumb thief who left identifying details at the scene.”

With Taco Bell and her other neighbors closing over the summer we knew Chidogo’s days were numbered at 14th and U St, NW (home of the old Seafood & Crab takeout.)

Chidogo’s opened up back in Nov. ’10 to mixed reviews. As for why they completed a significant renovation to be open for only a year – that is not entirely clear. My guess is that they wanted to get their name out and introduce folks to the brand but that’s just a guess.
So, for the fans fear not – Chidogo’s will be opening locations in College Park and National Harbor. I’m also told that when the new development from JBG is completed – they may return to one of the retail spaces.

Those who’ve walked south on 14th St, NW past the former Taco Bell space have likely noticed the wrapping on the windows (see above.) You may have heard of this development referred to as the Utopia project. It is no longer being called the Utopia project but it is still being developed by JBG. I’m told that demolition of the former Taco Bell and other spaces will commence in December. Stay tuned for more details on the project including the residential spaces as well as any new retailers who sign leases.

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.
One reader is on a quest:
“Dear PoPville,
My goal for the weekend was to find the limited edition Ben & Jerry’s flavor Schweddy Balls. I failed miserably.
I went to:
Giant (Col Hts @ Park Rd)
Target (Col Hts)
Safeway (Adams Morgan, Dupont 17th Street, Watergate)
Harris Teeter (Adams Morgan)
Whole Foods (Logan)
a variety of CVS and 7-11′sI think Whole Foods may have had it, but the tag that said “special flavor” was sold out.
I’m kinda chafed. My cousin told me that the Wal-Mart in my hometown of Duluth, MN carried the flavor. My co-worker told me he found it at the Whole Foods in BETHESDA (he offered me a taste of his Schweddy Balls, but I want my own!).
Do our local store managers not know their clientele? What do they have against Schweddy Balls? Who made the decision not to carry the flavor? Did they make the call or corporate headquarters? Why should a million red-neck moms based out of Tulepo, Mississippi–who cannot take a joke–determine what I can and cannot buy at my local DC grocery store?!?!
My quest to find Schweddy Balls continues and I would welcome tips from the commentariat. I would also like our local store managers to tell Popville why they do not have Schweddy Balls!!”

“Dear PoPville,
I don’t know if I should be laughing or mortified. I Google’d the heck out of the upcoming event and couldn’t find anything but bad spelling. Not surprisingly, the Masonic Temple isn’t open about their schedule.”
The reader found the following report from Crisis Connection:

Back on Oct. 6 we learned that Bella Cafe was now named Climax Sports Bar and Lounge at 900 Florida Ave, NW (by the 9:30 club.) At that time the sign looked like this:

Apparently that didn’t quite capture the essence of Climax – is this more climactic?

Though it is pretty sweet that the happy hour goes until 9pm…

BicycleSPACE
459 I Street, NWWe have planned a special event for the season finale of our I Street Social Group Ride which has consistently drawn large numbers of participants over the course of the summer. This Thursday, come prepared for “The Cupcake Caper!” Foul play will be afoot, and we will need your help to solve a mystery. Whoever can solve the crime will win a beautiful Brooks saddle and matching handlebar grips. But this won’t be easy– you’ll have to closely follow the clues and piece together the evidence.
Participants are encouraged to come in costume and dress up their bikes– prizes will be awarded to the most creative. It’s Halloween, people!
As always, expect to ride a unique route through the city accompanied by tunes from our “music bike.” Bring plenty of cheer to animate passers by.
If you would like to attend this Murder Mystery Party On Wheels, kindly RSVP on Facebook.”

Back in April ’11 we first learned of the plans for the 2nd floor space at 1216 Connecticut Ave, NW (above Shake Shack) in Dupont. This past weekened the Guitar Shop cleaned all of its inventory. The owner says that the shop will stay alive on the Web here.
According to a liquor license application the Guitar Bar will be:
“Upscale tavern serving European sausages, hotdogs, pretzels and popcorns featuring DJ and background music. No designated dance floor – no dancing. Summer Garden with 210 seats. Seating capacity is 60. Total occupancy load is 330.”

Check out the Brixton starting to take shape at 9th and U St, NW. The Brixton is of course one the projects from the Hilton brothers (Marvin, Gibson, Blackbyrd etc.) On that note I visited Chez Billy’s coming to Petworth and all I’m gonna say is that even in it’s skeletal shape – well it blew me away. Stay tuned on both fronts… Actually one more front, I passed The Independent also from the Hilton brothers coming to 715 Florida Ave, NW and major construction has been accomplished there as well.
