Every year we talk about the putrid smell of the Ginkgo tree. And even though every year DDOT sprays the trees some still stink. Well, Adams Morgan has taken the solution to the next level. Since they are expanding the sidewalks for the streetscape improvement – yesterday – they decided to kill two birds with one stone and take down the huge gingko tree in front of Asylum on 18th St, NW. I don’t think many will shed a tear…

“Dear PoP,
Saw the post earlier about the bike guy who got into an argument on 14th and FL ave. I was walking to my car around 8:45 and there were a ton of police everywhere on that corner. Was here any correlation that you’ve heard of?”
I’ve been getting tons of emails asking what happened yesterday morning, according to MPD, it turns out:
“MPD and Fire were investigating a small amount of a suspicious liquid used in an assault.
The liquid was determined to be bleach.”
Apparently the passenger assaulted the driver over a dispute of how much the fare should be.
Never a dull day…

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. But please no personal attacks. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.
While we take our dog crap debates very seriously, a reader sends word of one that is going to court.
Another reader sends word that it looks like Ray’s The Steaks East of the River is closing.

Bucking the clever name trend in Thai restaurants (Beau Thai, Thai Phoon Thai Tanic etc.) a new Thai restaurant aptly named – DC Thai Restaurant has opened up at 1018 Vermont Ave, NW (above the recently opened King of Kabob).

I’ll be honest – I’m particularly curious about the bakery part – anyone happen to check them out yet? If not, we’ll revisit for a proper judging after they’ve been open for a bit. You can see their menu here:
The lunch special could be pretty good for those that work nearby:

Back in May ’11 we learned that a Game Stop would be coming to 1759 Columbia Rd, NW. We judged the building here. Well, they’re now open.

And across the street the Unity Market has been closed for about a month. The park seems strangely quiet when I pass it now. Some readers have been inquiring if they’ll be reopening on 14th St, NW in Columbia Heights. I’m still keeping my eyes peeled for that but haven’t heard anything recently.

If anyone passed the Adams Morgan Exxon you couldn’t have missed the one:

I’m also really digging the vine growing around the arch.

This Asian style house from Georgetown is one my favorites. I’ve seen about 4-5 times then I forget where it is and stumble upon it a few months later and am blown away every time.

And the light made the front door sculptures look even cooler than they usually do:

Huffington Post DC shares some interesting details about the old Universal Gourmet space at 1825 Connecticut Ave, NW:
“Bakery entrepreneur Mark Furstenberg, former owner of Marvelous Market and The Breadline, is at work on a new yeast-centric concept: Bread Furst, a retail bakery to be located at 1825 Connecticut Ave. NW, near the Washington Hilton hotel.”
I’ll be sure to update as construction progresses and as they get closer to opening in late Feb.

Irish Whiskey is coming to 1207 19th Street, NW (formerly Porter’s.) What do you think of the building – too green or right on?

I can’t guarantee I’ll get them all posted but I’ll do my best.

$945 sound right for this basement studio?

Lots of folks interested in this topic:
“Dear PoPville,
I hate the idea of picking a random name off of a list when it come to doctors and being that reviewing doctors online hasn’t really taken off yet – I have no clue where to go to get basic care in Washington, DC. I was hoping we could get a thread going about great doctors in the DC area. If any readers have a pediatrician, internist, dentist, OB/GYN or any other awesome doctor that pops into their mind – it may be very helpful to others!”
Another asks:
“I’m kind of fed up with the lack of personal attention I receive from my current Primary Care Physician, looking for someone new, and wondering if you or your readers have any recommendations. I’m a male in my early 30′s and want to be sure I’m paying attention to things like blood pressure, etc that start to appear as you age. A downtown location would be nice for convenience, but I’d be willing to metro to someone who actually still believes in face time with patients and doesn’t just do blood tests and updates your prescriptions, which is what I currently deal with.”
Another reader asks:
“I’m looking for a doctor that accepts CareFirst, it seems like a lot of these doctors don’t accept insurance or HMO’s.”
We looked at some doctors here and dentists here. If you have any good recs for the readers above please say what type of insurance you use and location of their office.
