Back in Sept. ’11 we learned that St. Arnold’s was opening a 2nd location in the old Sabores space next to Dino at at 3435B Connecticut Ave, NW. At the time the owners hoped to open the spot in Nov. Hopefully the new signage is a good indication that they’re getting close now.

While we admired the new green paint job at Bar Pilar (1833 14th St, NW) a couple of weeks ago, I had no idea they’d be closing soon for the planned renovations into the 2nd floor. The Washington Post shared the word:
“Bar Pilar will close after this Sunday, Nov. 27, to allow construction work to begin on its long-planned second floor restaurant and bar, including the addition of a staircase in what is now the dining room. The closure will be indefinite, depending on how smoothly construction goes. Management hopes to reopen in time for New Year’s Eve.”
They also remind us that Standard (14th and S St, NW) only has 6 more days until they close for the Winter.

House of Sweden is located at 2900 K Street NW facing the Georgetown waterfront.
According to their Web site:
“House of Sweden has been awarded Sweden’s most prestigious architecture award; the Kasper Salin Prize for best building. Announced on the 16th of November 2007, the award is a testament to the work and creativity that has gone into creating this unique building.
Gert Wingårdh’s and Tomas Hansen’s design for House of Sweden – selected in competition – combines openness and transparency, unusual features in an embassy. It was designed specifically to foster an atmosphere of positive, creative cooperation between two great countries, and to create a base for cultural and commercial exchanges.
House of Sweden exemplifies the very best of signature Scandinavian simplicity, modernity, and unpretentious elegance, wedded to characteristic Swedish practicality and flexibility. It invites and inspires Swedes and Americans in an ongoing creative dialog.
Designed to rest like a shimmering jewel in the surrounding parkland, the blonde wood, stone, and glass structure is suffused with light, floating at night like an ethereal vision above its sparkling reflection in the Potomac River.
The building is light and airy, with large glass segments. Light is a key element, both outside and in. All around the body of the building is a belt of light, backlit wood, which after dark gives the sense that the building is floating. The House of Sweden stands on white pillars and is suffused with Nordic light. The materials are blonde wood, glass and stone, often in layers.”

“Dear PoPville,
My parents are coming into town and I’m looking for a good restaurant that will be open on Christmas Day that is both a) price “reasonable” (in the >$75 range, but willing to go up for a special experience/meal), b) vegetarian friendly and c) good. Any suggestions?
Thanks a million!”

From a press release:
“Beginning Monday through Feb. 5, 2012, the DC Public Library will forgive fines on overdue, lost or damaged books, CDs, DVDs, and other library materials. The campaign, entitled “Check it In” aims to encourage users who have avoided the library because of outstanding fines or fees to return and use the library.
“Libraries exist to give people access to books,” said Ginnie Cooper, chief librarian for the District of Columbia. “When fines and fees keep people away from the library, we need to find ways to encourage them to return. We hope giving people amnesty from fines andfees will do just that.“
To have a fine forgiven, cardholders can return overdue or damaged books or other library materials to any DC Public Library and speak with a library employee to update their account. For lost books, cardholders can speak with a library employee to have their account cleared.
For many years, the Library has not charged fines on overdue children’s books.
“Children’s books have carried no fines because we want to make sure that all children have access to books,” added Cooper. “Ultimately, we want the same access to adult books.”
Additionally, library cardholders are encouraged to visit any DC Public Library during this period to update their customer account with changes in email addresses, mailing addresses or phone numbers.”

Thanks to a reader for sending word from Coloradoan:
“New Belgium Brewing Co. has revealed it is considering Philadelphia, Pa., Asheville, N.C., and two other cities for its new East Coast brewery and has announced two new beers in development.
A sign of the brewery’s growing portfolio, Simpson revealed two new beers the brewery is working on for next year.
The first is a pale ale called Dig, which will replace its former spring seasonal, called Mighty Arrow.
The second beer is a pale lager called Shift and is named after the brewery’s free-beer-after-each-shift policy.
Shift will be released only in the brewery’s new 16-ounce cans that are coming off the canning line that is under construction.”

Thanksgiving has come and gone, I’ve waded through Black Friday and Cyber Monday emails, and I still have leftover turkey in the fridge! There are only so many turkey sandwiches I can eat, so I turned to Italy for inspiration. The solution: ravioli. I know it sounds complicated, but it’s not. It’s so easy that I’m not writing out a structured recipe. After so much Thanksgiving planning and prepping, I think it’s nice to engage is some free-style cooking for a change. Below, I guide you through an easy way to make delicious ravioli.
In addition to your leftovers, the only other ingredients you will need are:
Pre-made pasta dough
1 egg
Water or stock (any kind)
Parmesan cheese
Olive oil
Butter
Flour
Seasonings like salt, pepper, and nutmeg
Filling
I used a food processor to blend equal parts turkey (white and dark meat) and corn dressing. Then I added a handful of grated Parmesan cheese, a dash of nutmeg, and a few slices of cranberry jelly (from a can, of course). For 12 ravioli, I only used a ½ cup of the corn dressing and 3 to 4 ounces of turkey.
Continues after the jump. (more…)
