Dear PoPville – Window/Door Appliques?

“Dear PoPville,

I recently bought my very first home, in Trinidad. I’ve been there two months, and so far I love it! The house is a very modest, small rowhouse, with a new-ish brick facade someone put up over the original, clapboard front. (Some other houses on the row have also been bricked, some are still clapboard.) Whoever did my facade did it very simply, without even little brick frames or details around the windows. I see all those really neat Victorian-era brick homes with the lovely wooden appliques over the doors and windows and think, “Hey, that’s something simple and affordable I could do to spruce up my place a little!”

So, what I’m wondering: is it really a simple and easy job to put up these kind of decorations? I’ve found several sites that sell door surrounds, plinths, and window trim, but they all look so modern and generic. Are there any architectural-reclaim-type businesses around that might actually have some of those gorgeous Victorian decorations, or are those almost always destroyed during demo/renovations? Is this something I could do on my own with a ladder and a brick drill bit? If not, are there any contractors that readers would recommend for this kind of work? Any info would be most welcome. Thanks!”

Major Metro Track Work For This Weekend

Photo by PoPville flickr user ekelly80

From WMATA:

“Metro will advance major track work on sections of the Blue, Yellow, Red and Orange lines this weekend (Nov. 18-20).

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, and continuing through system closing on Sunday, Nov. 20, buses will replace Metrorail trains on the Blue and Yellow lines between King Street and Pentagon City stations. Three stations — Crystal City, National Airport and Braddock Road — will be closed during this time, as Metro installs new rail ties, insulators, upgrades the surfaces underneath the rails and installs communications cables for improved cell phone service.

In addition to regular shuttle buses between Pentagon City and King Street, Metro will offer special express bus service between Metro Center and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport throughout the weekend for the benefit of airport travelers.

On the Red Line, Metro crews will continue work to stabilize a municipal water main and sewer line within Farragut North Station. The heavy construction effort requires that one Red Line track be taken out of service to create a safe work zone. Red Line trains will single track between Dupont Circle and Judiciary Square, with trains operating every 20 minutes through the affected section.”

Dear PoPville – How Much To Pay a Pet/House sitter?

Photo by PoPville flickr user [F]oxymoron

“Dear PoPville,

I am going to be out of town for four days and was wondering what I should pay per day for a house/pet sitter? I live one block from 14th and U and I was going to ask a couple of kids in my office (OK kids to me) who are in their 20s if they would be interested. They live in the ‘burbs and I know they like to come into DC on weekends.

First of all maybe I’m biased but my little dogs are the best dogs ever and the cat is way cool so really I think people should pay me to take care of them but I guess I am being unrealistic. All I am asking is that they walk the dogs once a day and let them out a couple of more times into the back yard to do their business. The cat of course is self sufficient. I expect them to do nothing for the house except to clean up after themselves. I have a guest room they can use.

How much should I pay per day? Should I pay in advance or pay half up front and the rest on return? Is there anything else I should consider?”

The 5-Second Rule – PoPville’s official unofficial food truck critique by Queenedix – Bulgogi Battle

1st Yellow Vendor

Read Queenedix’s previous reviews here.

For those of you who remember the dark days when chicken curry was merely a glimmer in a Fojol’s eye and food carts in D.C. almost exclusively served reheated half-smokes alongside “FBI” t-shirts, you might recall a small yellow cart run by a mother-son team that parked at 15th and L and served Korean food. This cart, the Original Gangster of D.C. food trucks, first appeared in 2007 and seems to have bred a curious phenomenon—in a city without many duplicative competing food truck concepts, there are at least 4 different trucks in the Greater D.C. area focusing on Korean cuisine. Even more intriguing—two of the carts, Yellow Vendor and 1st Yellow Vendor, are often assumed to be related but are actually in fierce competition with one another, and have taken to Twitter repeatedly to make it clear they are NOT affiliated…although their trucks, names, and serving methods are nearly identical. I can’t help but suspect there’s more of a connection, probably even a familial one, which makes the competition between these trucks especially interesting.

Given that this many similar trucks are in business, I decided to investigate the seemingly booming bulgogi market. Since we’ll be taking next week off for Thanksgiving, I reviewed not one or two, but three different Korean trucks in the Ultimate Bulgogi Battle. I checked out the bulgogi/chicken combo, spicy combo, and kimchi at AZNEats, Yellow Vendor, and 1st Yellow Vendor to determine the best option for your next Korean craving.

Although the listing agent of the subject property for today’s Good Deal of Not Revisted (GDoN-R) did not identify the neighborhood as Truxton Circle, I would have placed it there. P Street is a few short blocks south of where the original Truxton Circle” once existed. In October, I profiled a GDoN-R property on New Jersey Avenue located just a bit south and west of the Truxton Circle neighborhood. I made mention that Truxton Circle is certainly picking up, to which an anonymous commenter responded, “Truxton Circle is not ‘picking up’”.

Organized Thieves Target U Street’s Bistro La Bonne

“Dear PoPville,

I live 2 blocks away from 14th & U and am a frequent at Bistro La Bonne [1340 U St, NW] – I know the staff quite well, have been going there for awhile now. Tonight, my best friend and I were sitting at the bar, right beside the entryway. Apparently a group of 5 Caucasians rolled through, 3 guys/2 girls, and while I was chatting away with my girlfriend (see: http://www.mediafire.com/?gko3394v8ewcns8 Ed. Note: A curse word is used for title of footage): a woman grabbed my purse that was hanging on my chair between my chair and my friend’s chair. The woman had come into the restaurant with a group, behind a bald man (see below) – they acknowledged the security coming in (this part of footage is not available yet), lingered, went towards the end of the bar, then walked out, picking up my bag along the way (I’m the last person at the end of the bar, all the way on the left). You can see this in the above referenced link (footage we taped while watching it at the restaurant – the robbery occurs at 9:46). The bald guy behind her was in on it, as was an Asian girl (visible in footage of outside the restaurant, though not available for this email) , a bearded white brunette male (see photo above), and the white brunette male you see next to him at the beginning of the footage.

They then proceeded to attempt to spend $512.00 at a CVS in Silver Spring. And they also tried to attempt to spend money at an Exxon Mobile in Silver Spring. (Insert declare: “USAA debit card ftw!”)

A police officer came by – we all reviewed the footage. This group of 5 were clearly professionals (hot damn they were – and I’m a NYer, I feel so… stupefied.). I’m reaching out to you because, as the officer mentioned, it was professionally executed. And since it happened on U Street (and they went to Silver Spring), it’s likely they’ve targeted U Street before. I’m enclosing footage and pictures for your viewers. Any help in the identification process is of course appreciated, but I recognize the impossibility of these incidents, and my principal hope right now is spreading the word on these motherf******, especially since it occurred at a rather popular spot like the Bistro.”

Have You Seen My Stolen Bike? Vol. 3, 4 and 5

Ed. Note: If your bike has been stolen send an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail with Stolen Bike in the subject line. Please include a photo, the location where it was stolen, if there is anything distinctive about the bike, what type of lock you used and let me know if you’d like me to include your email address with the post. If you think you may have seen the bike please share your tip in the comments.

“While I was out of town for my grandfather’s funeral, my front door was kicked in by a particularly brazen burglar. This happened in broad daylight around noon right off busy Florida Avenue in the U Street area. Luckily, one of my neighbors happened to return home shortly after the break in and called the police for me. The timing could not have been worse as I received the call from the responding officer with the bad news as I was leaving the funeral service. The burglar stole my bright orange, diamond frame Public bike, a laptop, my brand new bike lights, and a backpack. I know the chance that I’ll see any of my stuff again is pretty much zero, but I’m holding out hope that because my bike is so distinctive, maybe someone out there in PoPville has seen it? I’ve seen a couple orange step-through and mixte frame Public bikes riding around dc, but I haven’t seen any other diamond frames like mine, so it really might be the only one. Any help would be appreciated!”

and

“As I noted a few weeks ago, my house was burglarized and they took my bike, among other things. It is a brand new white Giant Avail with red trim – you’ll know it’s mine when you see 2 red cup holders attached to the frame and a small bike repair kit bag behind the seat. Please grab it! I’ll pay you back if you have to buy it, just email me at ustreetwatch@gmail.com.”

and

“My bike was stolen from the NY Ave Metro. It’s a green Surley Pacer, now with silver rain guards.

sure, include this email address: sasha_clayton@yahoo.com”
