We talked a little bit about Filene’s stores closing when we spoke about TJ Maxx coming to 13th and F St, NW. I just noticed that the Filene’s at 1133 Connecticut Ave, NW (pictured above) is now listing going out of business sales. (There were guys with signs up and down Connecticut Ave on Sat.) Filene’s is also located at 529 14th Street NW in the National Press Building and 5300 Wisconsin Ave, NW in Friendship Heights. If anyone stopped by – how are the sales?

It’ll be interesting to see how the long vacant property at the corner of 13th and Otis St, NW in Columbia Heights turns out. Looks like the whole block is getting fixed up. Note the house next door is also getting popped up but instead of wood framing is using cinder blocks:

If you have any fun or interesting animal/pet photos please shoot me an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say what neighborhood you’re from or upload to the PoPville flickr pool with your pets name and neighborhood. I can’t guarantee I’ll get them all posted but I’ll do my best.

“Ernie’s First Thanksgiving Pics”

“There’s been a big ginger sweetheart hanging around my apartment at 3rd and Rhode Island NE. He’s been out for at least three days, and so this afternoon I took him in for some food, water and warmth. He’s got a pretty nasty cut behind one ear, but otherwise seems to be in good health. He’s also incredibly friendly, leading me to believe he has a home nearby.
I looked for, but couldn’t find, a microchip, though I’m planning on taking him to the vet later this week to make sure (and get that cut looked at). In the meantime, I thought I’d see if anybody out in the internet recognized him.”

“Dear PoPville,
A friend of mine is moving to DC and has asked me about vegetarian or vegan stores in DC. He lives in Boston and I guess there are a couple of small shops there that he frequents and wonders if there are such places in DC or surrounding areas. I am clueless and wanted to ask if you knew of a couple of vegan/vegetarian stores (Wholefoods excluded). Thank you in advance for your help.”
You should def. check out Sticky Fingers located at 1370 Park Rd NW in Columbia Heights. There is also Everlasting Life, located at 2928 Georgia Ave, NW. There is also Java Green ( for now) and Cafe Green. And Soul Vegetarian of course. Can you guys think of others spots?
