Work Already Begins on New Living Social Office Space at 7th and New York Ave, NW

Last week the Washington Post reported:

“Living Social continues to rapidly expand and consume new office space in the District to accommodate that growth.

The online coupon company plans to lease 1005-1011 7th Street NW, a historic property across the street from the Walter E. Washington Convention Center commonly referred to as the Acme Stove Building, owned by Douglas Development.”

Walking by last weekend I was surprised to see the building completely covered as work had already begun.

Many DC USA Stores Open Midnight on Friday But Remember Metro Closes at 1AM

Photo by PoPville flickr user Mr. T in DC

For those who are crazy enough seeking to take advantage of Black Friday sales at DC USA you may want to drive. While many stores like Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, Modells, etc open at Midnight (Thursday night/Friday morning) I’ve been reminded that metro still closes at 1am (Thursday night/Friday morning) so keep that in mind if you’re taking metro.

Ba Bay Closes on Capitol Hill

Washington Post shared the news yesterday:

“Ba Bay, the contemporary Vietnamese restaurant on Capitol Hill, quietly closed its doors last Friday because of “circumstances beyond our control,” e-mails co-owner Denise Nguyen. The closing brings a mysterious end to a restaurant that originally promised to put a modern American spin on Vietnamese cooking for D.C. diners.”

A reader writes:

“Really sad. I work in Barracks Row and ate there all the time, their banh mis were fantastic, as well as their sriracha wings! Never saw too many other people in there though, guess it just didn’t catch on. A shame to lose one of the more inventive restaurants in the neighborhood.”

Ba Bay was located at 633 Pennsylvania Ave, SE. Prior to opening the space was the long abandoned, though the tables were always set for serving, Locanda Italian restaurant.

Dear PoPville – Sign Get Well Soon Book for Mrs Bae of Adams Express

“Dear PoPville,

It was really touching to read people’s response to the news of Adam Express’ closing due to Mrs. Bae health. So, we hung a little notepad on the restaurant’s door (protected from the rain in a ziplock bag), so that people in the community can share their words of support and encouragement. People can swing by Adam Express and use the notepad provided or leave a card of their own.”

Dear PoPville – Fire last night by Columbia Heights coffee

“Dear PoPville,

I live on 11th and Monroe St, NW and saw the industrial laundromat next to Columbia Heights Coffee get hosed down last night by DC firefighters. Props to my neighbor who saw the smoke and flames, flagged down a police officer, and got the firefighting team on the scene stat. Thankfully, no one was hurt to my knowledge. The owners have been assessing the damage and boarding up windows this morning.”

Bus Bench/Shelter Removed from 14th St, NW in front of Domino’s Pizza

Nov. 2011

“Dear PoPville,

A while ago when you mentioned the opening of Domino’s Pizza on 14th St. [2701 14th St, NW] I was one of it’s supporters. Recently I noticed that by coincidence (?), the canopy and seat of the bus stop that was on the sidewalk in front of Domino’s Pizza, disappeared when the pizza place was built. While the Pizza place gets a lot more visibility from 14th Street, old people (and today a pregnant lady) have no choice but to sit on a fire connection while waiting for the bus. You can see the pregnant lady sitting on the connection and the difference in color of the sidewalk where the canopy was removed (by the man’s umbrella). I think this is unfair.”

Movement at Satellite Pizza Coming to 2047 9th St, NW (Behind 9:30 Club)

“Dear PoPville,

Thought you might be interested – Satellite Pizza (next to 9:30 club) has torn up all the concrete on their patio that I am assuming will be the summer garden. They have a construction permit up, which I believe is new, and which states that the place will be 2 floors.”

Do People Still Have Doctor’s/Dentist’s Offices in their Homes?

On the cusp of a big holiday weekend allow me to ask a completely random question: Do people still have Dentist/Doctor’s offices in their homes? I passed this sign and it got me thinking – when I was a kid I went to some in homes but I wonder if they still exist. This one from Capitol Hill looked like it could be current. If it’s not common when did it switch from homes to office buildings? And when did it switch? Did it switch because office space became cheaper or because doctors/dentists wanted to reclaim their homes?

House of the Day

I always enjoy finding row houses with one lone window on the side. From the size I’m wondering if it may have been a window a/c unit at one point and then was replaced with this window?
