If you have any fun or interesting animal/pet photos please shoot me an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say what neighborhood you’re from or upload to the PoPville flickr pool with your pets name and neighborhood. I can’t guarantee I’ll get them all posted but I’ll do my best.

“Dear PoPville,
Does anyone have experience either removing the asbestos insulation that covers the hot water pipes that go to the radiators, or repairing that type of insulation? The coating of our insulation looks like it has a few small tears in it, but also some exposed sections around the pipe joints. Someone suggested plastering over the insulation and painting the plaster, but I’m not sure this is something we want to do ourselves or if it is the right solution. Any contractor recommendations and/or estimated costs would also be helpful.
Thanks!”

“Dear PoPville,
I’m studying and don’t have plans until the afternoon – is there any place I can go besides the Smithsonians?”
I saw the above note on the Firehook Bakery in Cleveland Park. Anyone know of some other spots open on Thanksgiving?
Ed. Note: Another reader asked about volunteer opportunities which we’ve discussed here. And another reader asked about purchasing meals for others which we’ve previously discussed here. But if you have other recs on either front please add them here. Thanks.

“Dear PoPville,
I live in a Columbia Heights row house with an alleyway that runs behind the house down the middle of the block. All summer and fall I kept finding my recycling bin at other neighbors’ houses (at least 4 or 5 different houses). My roommates and I have tried using markers and etchings to make sure people know the bin is not theirs, yet the problem kept reoccurring. Finally last week one bin was stolen entirely and nowhere to be found.
Is there a shortage of garbage/recycling bins in this city that I’m not aware of? Does anyone want to donate a new recycling bin to me?”
Unfortunately recycling bin wars have been going since at least aught nine. And before that garbage can wars raged in our alleys. Back in April trash can and recycling bins were no longer freee and replacement costs were set at $45 and $62.50 for a Supercan.
There was speculation that this could lead to an increase in thefts but I hadn’t heard about an increase in thefts. Anyone else experiencing problems?

More info as it becomes available.
One reader reports on to me @PoPville on twitter:
“they caught at least one of the suspects (not sure if there was more than one). Saw the arrest happen”
Another twitter follower writes:
“@DCPoliceDept says it was a robbery w/ gun.”
Official update from MPD:
“There were two robberies this morning in the First District:
The first took place at 8:55 A.M. in the 300 block of 13th Street, N.E.
In this case, there were a total of three black male suspects, two on foot wearing masks and a third operating a red Ford four door vehicle. The suspects made good their escape in the vehicle and were last seen traveling eastbound in the 1300 block of Constitution Avenue, N.E. The victim had personal property stolen and suffered minor injuries. No weapon was used in this offense.
The second took place 9:38 A.M. in the 1200 block of H Street, N.E.
In this case, members of D.C. Protective Services Police and the First District were able to successfully apprehend the suspect. The victim in this case was not injured and their personal property was recovered. The suspect displayed a gun during the robbery, which was also recovered at the scene. The officers and detectives on the scene did an outstanding job in apprehending this suspect.
At this time, it is unknown if these incidents are related.”

“Dear PoPville,
I wanted to report a mugging/assault on H St. NE Sunday night. I was assaulted by a group of teenagers at approximately 10:15 p.m. Sunday night across the street from Rock ‘n Roll Hotel and near the new Pho place that opened up. I was walking home from dinner (at Sticky Rice) and as I was passing a group of about 5-6 teenagers, one of them sucker punched me in the face and as I stumbled and turned around to face them another of them punched me in the face.
I realized there were about six of them so I ran across the street and sought refuge at the Rock ‘n Roll Hotel. I told the bouncers what happened and they were extremely helpful and nice- gave me a bottle of water, ice, and let me stay there until the police came to take down my statement (it took the police 40 minutes to show up after I had called 911). I suffered a bruised nose and chipped my tooth in the altercation.
I don’t have dental insurance and have spent the better part of the day researching dental options. It’d be great if some of your readers could offer up suggestions or if a dentist would like to help me repair my chipped tooth by letting me pay on a 3 month payment plan or something”
I’m so sorry to hear this. We have spoke about some general dentist recommendations here and yesterday we spoke of some options for finding a doctor without insurance. Does anyone know a dentist that would accept a payment plan?
