Your Afternoon Animal Fix

If you have any fun or interesting animal/pet photos please shoot me an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say the name of your pet and what neighborhood you’re from or upload to the PoPville flickr pool with your pets name and neighborhood. I can’t guarantee I’ll get them all posted but I’ll do my best.

“This is Winston from Logan Circle. He is an 11 month old puppy and we took this picture of him on Sunday in front of the Washington Monument. It was his first visit to the Mall.”

Jeanne d’Arc Statue Fully Restored in Meridian Hill Park

Back in early Dec. I was super psyched to see that the Jeanne d’Arc statue in Meridian Hill Park got its sword back. Turns out that wasn’t the whole project. The material was treated/painted black (it formerly looked greenish.)

What do you think of the new color?

Dear PoPville – Van Ness Restaurant Scene?

Dear PoPville,

I recently moved to the Van Ness are but its so different from the other parts of the city in terms of restaurant choices or nightlife which does not exist here period. My question to you or readers is where would you recommend in Van Ness not Cleveland Park to have a decent not overpriced sit down restaurant (Modern American).

This may be a bit too far north but I’d recommend Buck’s at 5031 Connecticut Ave NW. If you’re looking at Van Ness proper you may want to check out Acacia Bistro located at 4340 Connecticut Ave, NW.

Where would you guys recommend?

PoP Pre-Preview and Sneak Peek of Menu for Boundary Road Coming to H St, NE

A few weeks ago I noted Boundary Road, coming to 414 H St, NE, was starting to look good. Last week I was lucky enough to chat with owners Karlos Leopold and Brad Walker (and much of the team) as well as get a peek of the space. It was great to see that construction on the inside was much further along than I thought. It’s also much bigger than I thought at nearly 2,000 square feet (probably seating around 80-100 people). You can sorta tell from a picture I’ll post below but there will be a phenomenal bar, lots of reclaimed wood, and even some awesome lighting from Corehaus Designs.

Chef Brad Walker was kind enough to share a bit of his background:

I started working in the restaurant business when I was 15 at a crab shack/Greek restaurant in Bel Air, MD. I worked mostly in front of the house positions through college and after. My first job in the area was with Ragtime in Arlington, where my current business partner and I met. I attended L’Academie de Cuisine in Gaithersburg in 2006. For my externship, I was with the opening staff at Central, Michel Richard. After 9 months with Central, I was hired as a cook at Proof, before being promoted to Sous Chef. I spent a little more than a year with Haidar Karoum before I moved over to Cashion’s Eat Place with Chef John Manolatos. After a few years, I left Cashion’s in a short-lived attempt to help an unnamed company open a few new places. After bouncing around the local restaurant scene, I landed with Chef Fabio Trabocchi at Fiola as a cook shortly after they opened. I have been working towards Boundary Road for many years, with some of the best chefs in DC. I’m excited for the opportunity to cook for my new neighbors on H street and the city at large.

And here’s a look at their opening day menu:

Boundary_Road_Menu

While there will be a serious focus on food – drinks will not be neglected. There will be 8 beers on tap and 12 or so in bottles. Karlos describes it as a combination between an American Bistro and Beer Tavern.

They are hoping for a mid-January opening.

I’ve said it before and I’m sure I’ll say it again – this looks like another huge score for H Street.

Lawn Decoration of the Day

We’ve looked at this wild sculpture off P St, NW in Dupont in the past. This is the first time I actually saw a plaque with the artists name. At first I thought it said American born and I thought hmm that’s odd. Then I saw the comma…

Cat Found by Eastern Market

Dear PoPville,

I know it’s XMas Eve and all, but my husband and I, while walking around Eastern Market this afternoon, found a cat wandering around the Crepe Stand. He didn’t have a tag, but did have a collar with a small bell on it. He is also front-declawed and very mild-mannered. I know he must belong to someone given that he seemed very sweet and comfortable around people (but not dogs). We took him to the Humane Society on New York Ave and they are putting a 5-day hold on him for his owner to claim him.He was scanned and didn’t have a chip. As of 3:00PM on Sat, he is entered into their system, under the name Rudy (short for Rudolph, hey, It’s Xmas and all).

Found: Male Cat
Color/Type: Orange, Long Hair
Weight: Large Cat, prob. about 12-14lbs.
Found Location: Eastern Market
Distinguishing Features: Collar with small bell, Neutered,
front-declawed, “could” be a orange Maine Coon mix. Overall, in good
condition, just hungry.
