Dear PoPville,
I wanted to let you know about my new gym which just opened on 14th Street and the corner of Longfellow (5509 14th Street, NW). It’s called Second Wind Training. This is not your average gym. This is a CrossFit studio with classes in the morning and evening, personal training and endurance coaching. The gym will be open for business Monday morning, but people can stop by for a free workout Saturday morning at 9 or 10:30. There will then be an open house until 1pm or so.

It’s quite common to see the name of prolific late 19th/early 20th century developer Harry Wardman attached to real estate listings (often incorrectly, I might add). For whatever reason, the names of other, similarly prolific developers and architects are not as familiar. Clearly, the District of Columbia has seen decades of housing booms, each bringing particular styles, which contribute to the character of entire neighborhoods.
Continues after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
I was working on a project behind my house Sunday evening at about 6:30 when I heard a loud boom. Soon the sirens of police and other emergency response ensued, and I went to investigate to see a police cruiser had collided with a BMW at 14th and Arkansas. I don’t know which vehicle was coming from where, but four people went to the hospital, including the two officers in the cruiser. I later learned that everyone would be ok, but that they were obviously shaken up.”

Thanks to Michael for the heads up and the photos. This is one of my favorite blocks in the city. While I wish it was a bit closer walking distance to restaurants, I’ll just say it – if I were looking I’d buy this one in a heartbeat. What do you think – $439,000 sound right for this 3 bed/3 bath?

Back in July ’11 we learned that Ruff N Ready would be closing at 1910 14th St, NW to make way for a Taylor’s sandwich shop. We speculated about where a new location would be successful for a FQotD. A lot of neighborhoods were mentioned. Since then, I’ve been getting a few tips about a new 16th Street Heights location and I’m now happy to share the great news confirmed by a reader:
“Dear PoP,
So there I was, window shopping at Miss Pixie’s, when I found this delightful announcement:
NEWS FLASH!! RUFF & READY

ANNOUNCED) @ 4722 14TH ST.NW
@ 16TH STREETS HEIGHTS!How exciting is that? VERY, in my book.”
I’m gonna concur – this is very good news.
They already give you a taste of what’s to come:
