This gate off H St, NW in Chinatown is truly awesome.

I’ve really been looking forward to sharing this fence from S St, NW east of 18th Street. It’s one of my favorites:

Back in the day some readers got frustrated with me for posting fences. They didn’t think they were worth the space. I couldn’t disagree more. This is a lost freaking art. These fences are beautiful. That’s all I have to say about that.

We’ve appreciated this fence from Mt. Pleasant a few times in the past but somehow I never noticed the butterfly. Whether it’s new or not it was looking amazing yesterday:

“Dear PoP,
Your recent post of a thief climbing a fence to steal two bikes inspired me to ask the following question.
Is there any DC zoning regulation that keeps me from embedding broken glass shards into cement on the top of my backyard/alley fence? I too had a bike stolen this past year, which required the thief to not only jump a 7 1/2 foot fence to get IN to my backyard, but to once again scale that fence (with a 50 pound bike in tow) to get out.
I can’t help but think that if a row of razor-sharp glass had stood between the thief and my sweet Schwinn Hornet Cruiser, they might have moved on.
I know glass shards sound a bit barbaric, but it’s so much nicer looking than razor wire…and let’s just say it would get the job done.”
Anyone know if this is legal or not?
Do you think it should be legal?

This fence from Mt. Pleasant makes me smile every time I pass it. I’m fairly certain the dragon fly is a new addition (if not I don’t how I’ve missed it before):

Looks like some fence posts have gone in on North Capitol Street between Eckington and Bloomingdale. For folks that live in the area – do pedestrians often try to cross here? Do you support the idea of fences here? Anyone happen to know what they’ll look like? I’ll be sure to update when they are completed.

I just noticed this section of cool old fence behind the National Cathedral. It’s pretty wild because it is just one small section that has no function (there is a plain chainlink all the way around behind it).

Incidentally I had no idea it was only completed in 1990. I though it was much older than that.

Some serious details on this one. From the 1400 block of Chapin St, NW.

This fence is so random. And awesome. It’s located in Chinatown across the street from Chinatown Coffee.

I thought this was a pretty cool way to camouflage an HVAC unit downtown. I’ve never seen anything like this before. Anyone ever see something like this elsewhere around town?

“Dear PoP,
I’m interested in getting a wrought-iron type fence for my front yard in Columbia Heights. And, a bunch of my neighbors are interested as well, so we may do it as a team. Do any of your readers have a good suggestion for fencing and people to install it? Any idea of likely costs?
Also, and this is a longshot…I really love the fences with the little pineapples on top of the points (there is one like that on Harvard between 11th and 13th)…if any of your readers has one of those, I’d love to hear from them!”
Any suggestions? What do you think the cost of one of these types of fences will be? Given how expensive wood fences are, I’m hesitant to hear the answer…

I know everyone is as fascinated by fences as I am but I think these are two pretty unusual examples. Above is from Petworth and below is from Mt. Pleasant.
