Actually they’re quite normal houses (from Pleasant Plains) but I loved seeing the mural in the background through the alley:

“Any idea what in the world this Kalorama garage mural is about?”
I’m imagining it could be the set up for an elaborate drinking game…

AYT Auto closed at the end of Dec. ’11 at 14th and R St, NW (next to Miss Pixie’s.) Looks like Aston Condos construction is progressing and will soon overtake the AYT mural. I’ll remember you fondly.

This great mural in Adams Morgan’s Walter Pierce Park captures 10 years of living in the neighborhood by muralist Aniekan Udofia. As the years pass, the mural continues to get updated.

Local firefighters check out the mural

I suppose some part of me always knew this day was coming. First the removal of the Anna Maria sign and now this. A tough couple of months… Alas, it is not all horrible news. The gentleman painting the building said the iconic mural has been saved. It’s not clear to me if it will be displayed again in the future. More info when it becomes available.
Back in June ’09 we learned that a spot called Kindred Bar and Lounge has leased the space at 1357 U St, NW. It is my understanding that there have been some disputes with the landlord so it’s not clear what’s going on with the timeframe or even if the plans are the same (the kindred website is no longer live.) More info on that front when available too.

I admired the wheat paste roosters back in Jan. ’10. Now the alley on P St, NW between 14th and 15th has the mother of all rooster murals:

This is on the side of a car wash on Georgia Avenue just south of Missouri. The painter is from Korea and this is the first mural he’s ever done. It is of the Dokdo Islands in the East Sea.
Turns out it’s actually a bit of a controversial topic:
“The rocky outcrop, known as Dokdo in South Korea and Takeshima in Japan, is considered by both countries part of their own respective territories, and the dispute over them has been an ongoing spoiler in bilateral relations.”
As a former International Relations student – makes me love DC even more.

This great mural is from the side of the Sewell Music Conservatory on Kennedy St, NW. I especially dig the mix of old and new.

Unfortunately this mural off the Girard St, Park on 15th Street was a victim of graffiti. Glad to see it got restored to its former glory:
