Thanks to a reader for sharing this email from the current owners:

“The LaundroMutt needs new owners…or we will be closing our doors come April 30th, 2010.

We, the owners, have found ourselves too busy with our other business commitments and must sell the LaundroMutt. We would very much like to see this great business continue in the neighborhood and we have loads of ideas to increase revenue and bring additional, exciting services to the customers….but we simply do not have the time or resources to do this.

We are accepting all offers from interested buyers….but are looking to move quickly. It is a great, fun place to work with cool customers (2 and 4 legged). We will gladly share all ideas we have for expanding the business in order to increase revenue and best serve the loyal customers and supportive neighborhood.

Please contact sueb@homewardtrails.org or lrol@aol.com if you are interested.”

A reader sang their praises back in Oct. ‘09. Laundromutt is located at 1722 Florida Ave., NW.

This apartment is located at 1801 Calvert Street, NW:

The Craigslist ad says:

“Very comfortable one-bedroom apartment in the heart of Adams Morgan. Separate living and dining areas, central air conditioning, washer and dryer in unit, private balcony with city views and a roof deck in the building.”

1801_Calvert_NW_4

Does $1695 sound reasonable for this 1 bedroom with balcony?

Ed. Note: there is also a $35 application fee. Yesterday some folks thought that was an indication of fraud. I believe many apartments have a legit $35 fee. Of course you always have to be cautious with Craigslist.

Props To Ansonia Wines for Getting Proper Signs

March 16th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Adams Morgan, signs | 4 Comments »

I understand that signs like these are expensive but it is so much nicer than the flimsy banners that seem to proliferate every time a new store opens. So I just wanted to give credit where credit is due. Ansonia Wines is located at 1828 18th Street, NW.

Adams Morgan Mural Deteriorating

The mural on Champlain near the Marie Reed Center seems to be in danger of disintegrating. I thought I’d capture it for posterity.

New Coffee Shop Opens in Adams Morgan

March 9th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Adams Morgan, coffee | 9 Comments »

IMG_3058

Back in the begining of Jan. we heard that Adams Morgan was getting a new coffee shop at 2204 18th Street, NW. It has officially opened. It’s a nice little space with pastries and other food options (the menu was still be finalized when I stopped in) as well as coffee. To the reader who inquired in a previous post – they don’t have the comfy chairs like Tryst. But it is a very comfortable and clean looking space. Anyone try their coffee yet?

Friday Question of the Day – What Would Work Here?

January 28th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Friday Question of the Day, Neighborhoods - Adams Morgan, Retail | 57 Comments »

The old Caribou Coffee spot on 18th Street in Adams Morgan has been vacant for ages. It seems insane to me because this is such a prime location. Many folks have probably walked by this space dozens of times. It’s not a huge space so I’m curious what you think would work in this location. What would work is not necessarily a dream retail outlet, rather I’m curious what you think would realistically be successful in this spot. Any ideas?

Tryst on 18th Street in Adams Morgan Launches New Cocktail Menu

January 28th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Adams Morgan | 11 Comments »

IMG_2251

And man am I drunk. Seriously I can’t read any of my notes at the moment. Tryst launched its new cocktail menu Thurs. evening. And it was great launch. I tried a few but by far my favorite was the “Demolition Derby (up) A riff on the classic Derby – gold rum, fresh lime juice and honey-spice syrup”. Beverage Director David Fritzler (pictured above), when pressed to recommend three favorites, suggested the Bitter Ex, Winona Ryeder and Ward 1. After the jump check out more photos and full list of cocktails. Read Full Post

Not Terribly Exciting Columbia Road Openings

January 27th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Adams Morgan, Retail | 9 Comments »

IMG_2159

A few readers have written in mentioning that the new CVS has opened up on Columbia Road just east of 18th Street, NW. I believe the old one across the street has closed so it’ll be interesting to monitor that space to see if anything interesting goes in. And to continue the less exciting news of that stretch of Columbia a T-Mobile store has also recently opened. Why do you think that stretch of Columbia (east of 18th) has a hard time attracting interesting retail/restaurants?

Jubilee Housing Responds to Sorrento Renovation Post

January 8th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Buildings, Neighborhoods - Adams Morgan | 21 Comments »

IMG_1555

Last we spoke about the Sorrento building getting renovated at 18th and Kalorma in Adams Morgan. Jubilee housing is in charge of the project and they responded late to the discussion so I wanted to bring their comment to your attention:

“Greetings from Jubilee Housing. We have read this discussion with considerable interest. Just a quick response: Jubilee Housing is a nonprofit organization providing affordable housing and other life opportunities to more than 700 people in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The organization began in 1973 when a handful of Church of the Saviour members mortgaged their own homes to buy two apartment houses, and soon after, the Sorrento. They worked nights and weekends to bring the buildings up to code for the benefit of residents, securing one small pocket of affordable housing in Adams Morgan. From that beginning, Jubilee Housing has grown to include seven buildings and an array of services for economically disadvantaged residents.

In the last five years Jubilee has completed five similar properties in the neighborhood, totaling 145 apartments, three after-school centers for children and youth grades K-12, and a daycare center for newborns, infants and toddlers. While the work is costly to restore the 80+ year old properties to modern condition, two-thirds of the total funding comes in the form of private equity, grants and other contributions. The City financing is important to the success of the properties, but is no greater than the per unit investment in many of the high end condominium projects sited by others bloggers in this string of comments.

Residents of Jubilee properties are proud members of the Adams Morgan community and, like everyone else in this conversation, contribute to the City’s well being.

For the record, the seven properties each had moderate rehabilitation when originally acquired by Jubilee, but this series of renovations is the first life cycle upgrade in their history. And the sign on the original posting is for Ellis Dale, the general contractor performing the renovation work.”
