Bloomingdale Residents Brace Yourselves – You May Be Getting Another Bar!

Ed. Note: As mentioned previously, Bloomingdale has been frequently teased with the possibility of getting a neighborhood bar. Hopefully the following tip will turn out to be true but as with all scuttlebutt please read the following as an unconfirmed report.

And the potential good news keeps on coming for the possibility of a bar finally coming to Bloomingdale. Now it looks like we may have a race on our hands. A reader writes in this scintillating tip – a bar called “Bloomingdale Hospitality” is looking to move into 116 Rhode Island Ave, NW and are in the process of applying for permits and licenses.

In late January I broke the news that Bloomingdale was close to getting its first bar (Rustik Neighborhood Tavern), to be located at 1832 1st Street, NW (near T St.), pending some permitting issues. Well 116 Rhode Island Avenue, NW is actually right around the corner so it’ll be interesting to see who makes it first. I’m really hopeful that Bloomingdale actually will get a neighborhood bar one day soon. And from all the folks I speak to, I think the first one to set up shop is going to be rewarded with a very grateful and loyal following…

I echo what the original tipster wrote:

“Here’s to hoping that with three projects on that corner, at least one will get finished!”

( Baraki is the third project referenced above.) As soon as a permit is posted I’ll be sure to update.

The Craigslist ad says:

“top floor condo in converted rowhouse available for rent!

1 bedroom/1 bath with open floor plan. Hardwood floors, cathedral ceilings and modern accents throughout.

Bedroom is bright with three large windows, custom closet with ample storage space, hidden clothes hamper and drawers

Exposed brick walls in the living room.

Kitchen provides plenty of cabinet space and granite counters with GE stainless steel appliances

Bathroom is airy with plenty of light, granite countertop vanity with tons of storage space and HE stackable front loading washer dryer tucked away into a storage closet.

The condo includes a large private rooftop deck (12 x12) just off the kitchen perfect for social gatherings, private dinners, container gardening.

Also included is a private off street parking spot and utilities (gas, water, electric).”

Lots more photos can be seen here.

As a fan of Bloomingdale I was pretty intrigued by this one particularly because of the roofdeck. Does $1600 sound reasonable?

Bloomingdale to Get a Neighborhood Bar! Really!

January 25th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Bars, Neighborhoods - Bloomingdale | 47 Comments »

Bloomingdale has been teased with the arrival of a neighborhood bar for years. Many thought that Baraki to be located at 1st and T Streets, NW would be the answer. Baraki’s opening has been delayed for months and there is no indication that it will open any time soon. On Twitter, there is some talk that Big Bear Cafe (1st and R) has applied or will apply for a liquor license though I didn’t see an application in the window when I walked by last weekend. But what I did learn was even more exciting. I ran into the owner of the soon to be Rustik Neighborhood Tavern to be located at 1832 1st Street, NW.

The owner, Diton Pashaj, told me that there are still a few hurdles to clear and some construction to be completed but his description sounds like just what many residents of Bloomingdale are craving. He hopes the space will be ready to open in May. He are some details:

“Yes, we will have food

Yes, we will do brunch

Happy hour…check

Yes we will have outdoor seating

Jukebox…no problem

Yes, it will be a cozy, neighborhood bar

Yes, we will have many delicious kinds of draft beer, and a wine or two for you wine lovers

Yes, we will be active participants in the Bloomingdale community”

I think we’ve looked at the building back in the day. The Metropolitan Wesley AME Zion Church is right on North Capitol in Bloomingdale. I never really appreciated the stained glass before:

Art Space Possibly Coming to Old Fire House on North Capitol

January 7th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Bloomingdale, art, scuttlebutt | 10 Comments »

IMG_1704

I heard on twitter that the old firehouse at 1626 North Capitol Street, NW might temporarily house an art space. The great DC artist and friend of mine Scenic Artisan, Sean, promised to keep me updated on the progress. But I think this is great news if it happens!

We last spoke about this space in Feb. ‘09 when it was going on the market again.

Thanks to John from Alter Urban (who also was behind this controversial house of the day) for letting me know about this cool project on Seaton Place in Bloomingdale. Dig the decks?

Dear PoP – A Really Good Pop Up

January 4th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Architecture, Buildings, Neighborhoods - Bloomingdale, Pop Ups | 27 Comments »

IMG_1696

“Dear PoP,

If you haven’t seen it, check out the new pop-up on the Unit Block of T St NW. I think the house number is 68. It is the most architecturally sympathetic pop-up I have ever seen. Indeed, I pointed it out to a few friends today and it took them a few minutes to actually see it – that is how sympathetic it is. It looks like there is still work being done on the house at this point – would be interesting to see what the inside looks like!”

I’ll keep my eyes peeled to see if it goes on the market for a peek at some inside photos. What do you guys think of the pop up?

The Bloomingdale neighborhood easily has the most hidden lawn art. Every time I walk those streets I encounter another new (to me) interesting piece.

Reports of a Shooting Outside Windows Cafe in Bloomingdale

December 3rd, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Crime - Stories, Neighborhoods - Bloomingdale | 13 Comments »

001

I received the following email from a reader at 7:24pm:

“I know that you’ve been featuring Bloomingdale quite a bit lately, and I just wanted to let you know that something’s definitely happening at Windows Cafe (101 Rhode Island Ave NW) on Rhode Island. We were just on our way home and the street is blocked off with police tape, there are loads of cops there, and we did see someone on a gurney.

Windows is one of the best businesses in our neighborhood, and I sincerely hope the news isn’t as bad as it seemingly looks.”

I just got off the phone with a different neighbor in the area at 7:45pm. The neighbor tells me that the word on the street is that a Pepco employee may have been shot. An ambulance responded and left the scene. Streets remain closed around Windows and police (over 12 cars) are still on the scene. A neighbor heard one gunshot. In my talks it is not clear who if anyone was injured and/or how severely. I’ll update as more info becomes available from MPD.

Good Deal or Not? “gorgeous heart-of-pine floors” Edition

This home is located at 43 Seaton Place, NW:

The flier says:

“Price Reduced, Seller says bring offers!!!Elegant renovated Victorian row house includes historic charm with modern upgrades including kitchen and bathrooms. Original period architectural details including gorgeous heart-of-pine floors, fireplace in formal dining room and pocket doors. Over-sized master bedroom includes box bay window and walk-in closet. Parking in back. Property also for rent”

More info and photos found here.

Well, it’s no secret I’m a big fan of Seaton Place. You can see another GDoN from Seaton Pl from a few weeks ago. I have to admit I was blown away by these floors. I don’t know if it is because some of my own floors are so screwed up but these look amazing. Does $550,000 sound reasonable for this 4 bed/2.5 bath?

A Reader Explains Flooding in Bloomingdale

October 29th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Bloomingdale, quality of life | 3 Comments »

BloomingdaleStreams

“Dear PoP,

For a little historical context on the Bloomingdale flooding, I made a map. I placed the grid of streets over the 1861 Boschke Map and highlighted the streams in what is now Bloomingdale. A seam runs through the old map at the break in the streams. That effects accuracy, but it is pretty close. I was in a house at the northwest corner of Flagler and U and the owner said he could hear running water in the basement.”

Well this helps explain this scene a bit. Totally wild. Big props to the reader for making the map. Who knew?

Dear PoP – Flooding in Bloomingdale

October 28th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in DC Government, Dear PoP, Neighborhoods - Bloomingdale | 12 Comments »

IMG00124

“Dear PoP,

I don’t know if anybody outside the neighborhood has seen this, but there is some serious flooding happening on Rhode Island Ave NW, about ten to twenty feet before 1st St. in front of the dry cleaner’s. This picture is from yesterday, but when I walked outside today the puddle had overtaken the entire street. Cars were going through the water at less than 5mph, creating a bit of a traffic jam. Any idea if this is some sort of sewage/drainage problem? Or is this a normal occurrence in Bloomingdale?”

I’ve seen this scene in many neighborhoods around DC. I’m fairly certain it is caused by clogged sewage drains. You can report a problem here or just call 202-612-3400. Anyone else note some flooding around town?

Large Master Suite w/ cathedral ceilings & spacious ensuite bath. Landscaped front yard + back deck for outdoor dining. Off street parking w/ roll up door. Located near Shaw METRO. I love Seaton Place in Bloomingdale, it seems like a very quiet block with beautiful homes. What do you think of this particular home? The “chef’s kitchen”? Does $614,777 seem reasonable for this 5 bed/3.5 bath?

Here’s a interesting rowhouse in Bloomingdale. There’s a similar one on T Street, NW if memory serves. Truth be told, I think I like the traditional ones a bit better.
