Thanks to a reader for sharing the news:

“A new dessert bakery just opened called Divinely Decadent Desserts. They opened in lower Brookland on 12th Street, NE by Rhode Island Avenue [2703 12th Street, NE] this last Saturday (March 06). I went there and had a delicious Red Velvet cupcake.”

Great news for Brookland!

Dear PoP – Post Reports on Brookland Development Plans

October 9th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Development, Neighborhoods - Brookland | 13 Comments »

10th and Irving NE

Ed. Note: This is one of my favorite homes in Brookland… But this is exciting news!

Thanks to a reader for send this Post article – Abdo Sets Sights on Revival in Brookland:

“Abdo’s plan includes a public square and clock tower that would be similar to piazzas in Europe with cobblestones, cafes and restaurants; an arts walk that would provide artists’ work space; an arts building that would offer room for recitals and artists’ demonstrations; and a college main street that would be filled with eclectic mom-and-pop shops.”

Sounds awesome, yeah? Read the full story here.

The flier says:

“Price just reduce by 50K!Classic mid-century modern built in 1950 by Washington architect. With light filled rooms, refinished oak hardwood floors, many original details with new appliances, mechanical upgrades and restored charm. Perched high above the street level with wonderful views. Master bedroom plus three others on second floor.”

More info and photos found here.

The reader writes:

“I love it, and we’re thinking about taking a look. It’s huge and has a ton of character.”

It does look pretty sweet, it even has a great door picture! Though, I feel like the price may still be a bit high. It has been reduced from $749,900 to $699,900. Sound reasonable? What do you think of the house itself?

Catholic University a Bit Depraved?

June 29th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Brookland, signs | 21 Comments »

DSCN0446, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

I saw tons of these signs around Catholic University. A bit ironic? Ed. Note: Obviously these signs are not affiliated with Catholic University.  I just thought it was funny they were surrounding the campus.  On Flickr Mr. T in DC asks:

“I don’t think it’s legal to discriminate based on gender like that, is it?”

Any lawyers out there?

House of the Day

10th and Irving NE, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

Mad props to my friend Dave for sending me this photo. Back when I toured the Brookland area I heard about this mythical “circle” house. We walked up and down dozens of blocks looking for it. I was convinced it didn’t exist. But then I got the greatest simple text of a photo saying – 10th and Irving NE. Awesome!

Going and New to Me

May 21st, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Coming and Going, Neighborhoods - Brookland, Neighborhoods - Mt. Pleasant | 13 Comments »

Most people have heard by now that the Mt. Pleasant Deli located at 3068 Mount Pleasant St, NW has closed.

DSCN9009

And in the ‘new to me’ world, during my Brookland travels my buddy showed me the Turkey Thicket Recreation Center located at 1000 N Michigan Ave, NE. The grounds are huge. Plus they’ve got an indoor pool! Nice. Anyone ever take advantage of it?

Judging Buildings Reader Request

May 14th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Architecture, Buildings, Churches, Neighborhoods - Brookland | 11 Comments »

“Dear PoP,

I see online that it is, or was, Brookland week. I would encourage you to stop by the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center, just north of the Basillica off of Harewood Rd. I drove up Harewood Avenue after mass at the Basillica a few weeks ago and was like, “What the heck is that?” Personally, I think the building and front lawn are gorgeous!”

Yup, was pretty taken with this building. And the lawn was amazing. I was telling my buddy who was showing me around that this would be a great spot for a frisbee game. I have truly enjoyed “Brookland week”! Also right next door to the Cultural Center is another cool church – Ukranian Catholic Shrine.

But I’m most curious what you think about the Cultural Center located at 3900 Harewood Road, NE?

I’m all for CVS, seriously I am. But it seems painful that this old theater in Brookland was converted into a CVS. I also noticed that the old movie theater in south Dupont is also now a CVS. I miss movie theaters. Oh well…

You Knew This Post Was Coming – The Basilica

May 12th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Churches, Neighborhoods - Brookland | No Comments »

DSCN9000

Of course I couldn’t go to the Brookland area without checking out the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. It is located at 400 Michigan Avenue, NE. It most definitely is impressive. There are tons of mosaics that are pretty fresh.

DSCN8996

Actually what I liked most was the hall with all the names engraved on the walls:

DSCN8994

And there are thousands of names. I couldn’t believe I randomly spotted this one:

DSCN8995

Truth be told I was more blown away by the Franciscan Monastery. Nevertheless it’s most definitely worth a visit. A couple more photos after the jump. Read Full Post

Judging Modern Homes

May 12th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Architecture, Buildings, Neighborhoods - Brookland | No Comments »

DSCN9060

Here is another cool example from Brookland (Kearny Street, NE). I took a few shots but it was somewhat obscured by a tree. It certainly is a very different style from the other homes I saw in that area. The windows are wild. What do you think – thumbs up or down?

A few more photos after the jump (including a surprise for ‘not telling’). Read Full Post
