Last two Cap Hill rowhouses for this week. Above I dug the shutters and below I found the front door placing unusual.

The Craigslist ad says:

“We invite you to discover 215 C Street Apartment Homes, a hidden gem in the heart of Washington DC’s Capitol Hill. We are conveniently located two blocks from the South Capitol Metro and one block from Pennsylvania Avenue with its shopping, dining, and entertainment. Easy walking distance to The House and Senate Office Buildings,The Library of Congress, The Supreme Court, and The Capitol and just TWO blocks from Capitol South Metro station.”

Since I did a bunch of walking around the Hill I thought I’d check a rental option. I was intrigued by this one because of the 2 months free rent plus a $1000 visa gift card. I hadn’t seen a perk like that before. So does $1420 sound reasonable for an efficiency at this location (plus perks)?

Judging New(ish) Homes/Development

March 9th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Architecture, Development, Neighborhoods - Capitol Hill | 25 Comments »

IMG_3193

There are a couple of blocks in South East, not too far from Eastern Market, that has a wild new development. A friend of mine said that she believes it is a mixed income development.

IMG_3189

Does anyone know the story behind these homes? The pictures don’t do them great justice, but I thought it looked awesome.

Restoring Hope for Humanity

This has just got to make you smile. I think I saw this on South Carolina in Capitol Hill but it might have been another State…

The best part though is what time they’d like you to pick up the doll (before they crossed it out):

The Craigslist ad says:

“ARE YOU INTERESTED IN LIVING IN AN AWESOME CONDO IN THE CAPITOL HILL NEIGHBORHOOD? The property is a two-bedroom, two-bath condo, constructed in the 1950s and totally renovated in 2006. The condo includes an I-Pod Docking Station and and the kitchen includes Stainless Steel appliances and granite countertops. Located in Washington DC on Capitol Hill near the Eastern Market part of town and just 15 blocks from the Capitol.”

Does $2100 sound reasonable for a 2 bedroom/2 bathroom in this location?

Judging New Buildings – The Iridium

February 3rd, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Buildings, Neighborhoods - Capitol Hill | 14 Comments »

IMG_2356

The Iridium is located at 1306 Pennsylvania Ave, SE. A friend tells me that it is pretty new building. I’m digging the big balconies. What do you think of the style? This building also leads to another question. If you bought into a new building with the promise of retail on the first floor, would you pissed if a CricKet (as is the case here) or a tax preparer or something like that went in? Or are you far more concerned with the condo itself and whatever retail comes in would just be gravy?

Wisdom Bar Definitely Worth Checking Out

January 31st, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Bars, Neighborhoods - Capitol Hill | 20 Comments »

IMG_2362

I finally had the opportunity to visit the great bar Wisdom located at 1432 Pennsylvania Ave. SE on Friday night. I was happily surprised to see that the place had a very chill atmosphere and most importantly the drinks were terrific. I feared that it was going to be a bit pretentious but fortunately I couldn’t have been more wrong. It just feels like a regular neighborhood bar along the lines of a slightly upper scale Red Derby. For those who want to check them out they’re having an absinthe tasting on Tuesday.

I’m also told that the nearby Trustys is a terrific bar. Anybody ever check either of these spots out before?

What the Helen of Troy is the International Graduate University?

January 31st, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Capitol Hill, What the Helen of Troy is This? | 5 Comments »

IMG_2373

I thought I knew all of DC’s Universities but stumbled upon this one on Sunday. Their small Web site says:

” International Graduate University, a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) educational institution, founded in 1967, licensed to award graduate degrees by the District of Columbia, and approved by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs for veterans benefits, and provides I-20 Visas for students who apply and are accepted for admission with the application form presented in this website.”

They are located at 1325 D Street, SE. But when I asked some neighbors about it they said they thought the school was closed. I called the number listed and got an active voicemail so perhaps they are still open. Anyone familiar with this school? They did have an interesting lawn decoration:

Sadly they stopped shoveling their sidewalk half way…

Wind Turbines at the Botanic Garden

January 31st, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Capitol Hill | No Comments »

IMG_2327

I’ve long been a fan of the Botanic Garden located right near the Capitol building. These wind turbines just make it that much cooler. There’s even a computer monitor that shows you how much energy it is capturing though one of them was broken on Sunday… Still very cool though…

Cool Art at Capitol Hill Art and Frame

January 13th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Capitol Hill, Retail, art | 1 Comment »

After last week’s discussion about where to get art framed I took particular notice when I walked by this shop at 623 Pennsylvania Ave, SE. The artwork titled Songlines in the window by Sue Weisenburger was pretty sweet:

Trees Labeled in Capitol Hill

December 8th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Capitol Hill, Trees | 6 Comments »

IMG_1187

I recognize I’m not a normal person. You see I took this field botany class in college and got a bit addicted to trees. The problem is I’m not very good at retaining knowledge, as you may have been able to guess… Anyway, I was psyched to see this row of trees labeled (east of Union Station).

Wow, this is sad news. Capitol Hill Bikes located at 709 8th St SE on Barracks Row is liquidating their inventory. Thanks to a reader for sending:

“After 9 years, we’ve lost our lease and must liquidate our entire inventory!

Bikes, clothing, accessories, parts, fixtures–Everything must go!

Come in early for the best selection! Store opens at 11 a.m. sharp.

Up to 75% off

We’ve been proud to serve the Capitol Hill community for these many years and we hope to be able to do so again. Until then, we must liquidate and vacate our current space. Please show your support by doing some early Christmas shopping or getting that new set of wheels you’ve been wanting.”

Incidentally, another reader asks:

“Where’s the best place in DC to get a retro bike? What are the top 5
bike stores in the city..not for road bikes, but for casual bikes.”

I know there were lots of fans of Rollin Cycles at 1320 14th Street, NW and the Bike Rack located at 1412 Q Street, NW.
