Chinatown Coffee Co. Building For Sale

Wow, there is a crazy real estate piece in this week’s Northwest Current (click on No. 10 to download a PDF copy). They write:

“The residential portion of the building at 475 H St. is offered for $2,495,000. The commercial property is listed for $1,295,000; together, the two are available for $3,750,000. For details, contact Jonathan Taylor of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty at 202-276-3344 or jtaylor@ttrsir.com.”

Do you think this is just to become the landlord? I’m guessing that the coffee shop has signed a multi-year lease? Anyone know?

We took a look at Chinatown Coffee Co. this summer.

National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum Courtyard Rocks

February 28th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Chinatown/Penn Quarter, Neighborhoods - Downtown, museum | 13 Comments »

I think I’ve mentioned that the National Portrait Gallery (also housing the Smithsonian American Art Museum) is one of my favorite places in DC (located at 8th and F Streets, NW). I’m embarrassed to admit that I’d never actually checked out the awesome courtyard before. I don’t know how I’ve managed to walk around it every time… Anyway, it’s freaking awesome. Their Web site says:

“The enclosed courtyard with its elegant glass canopy designed by world–renowned architects Foster + Partners provides a distinctive, contemporary accent to the museums’ Greek Revival building. Foster + Partners was assisted by internationally acclaimed landscape designer Kathryn Gustafson of Seattle–based Gustafson Guthrie Nichol Ltd. in the creation of the courtyard’s interior design, with a variety of trees and plantings, as well as a unique water feature.”

You can read more about it here (though at present there was no water feature). More photos after the jump. Read Full Post

More Pizza for Chinatown

February 25th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Chinatown/Penn Quarter, Pizza | 5 Comments »

IMG_2805

First a Vapiano opened up at 623-625 H Street, NW. And now Pizza Bistro Med has opened up at 736 6th St NW. PQ Living notes that this spot used to be a Pho place. Fortunately a new Pho spot will be coming nearby to 608 H St, NW.

I was down there for the Chinese New Year and decided to try a slice. I’d say it’s perfectly fine for a take out option. I do like having the option for a quick slice. Couple more photos including menu and inside space after the jump. Read Full Post

Anyone Know the Plans for this Building?

It seems the old Webster School located at 940 H Street, NW has been boarded up for ages. This is such a prime location that it must be on someone’s radar. Does anyone know if/what the future plans are here?

Happy Chinese New Year!

IMG_2799

Did anybody check out the great parade Sunday afternoon? Unfortunately I got there just after 2pm and my view was pretty much the back of people’s heads. But there was certainly a great, fun vibe in the air. The kids looked like they were having an absolute blast. Did anyone stay to see/hear the gigantic firecracker? Happy Year of the Tiger!

As for photos, fortunately I have been saved by the PoPville flickr pool:

Big Fight in Chinatown Sat. Night?

February 22nd, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Crime - Stories, Neighborhoods - Chinatown/Penn Quarter | 131 Comments »

Ed. Note: Happier Chinatown news about Sunday’s fantastic parade (pictured above) coming at 11am.

“Dear PoP,

I was around chinatown on Sat night and saw a large (30-40 people) group of teenagers on both sides of 9th st yelling and screaming at each other. A few minutes later after I parked my car and was walking back down on 9th I saw one group of the teens walking to another teen and starting beating him up. The teen was able to escape, though. There were police all over the place. Do you know what happened?”

This is the first I’m hearing, any readers happen to see what happened?

This one at 300 Mass Ave., NW for $1828 seems more realistic…

Bar 7 Coming Soon to 7th St, NW

February 1st, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Bars, Coming and Going, Neighborhoods - Chinatown/Penn Quarter, Neighborhoods - Mt. Vernon Square | 11 Comments »

IMG_2291

When the Passenger opened up at 1021 7th St. NW, near the Convention Center, it instantly improved that stretch of 7th Street. I was excited to see coming soon signs for the nearby Bar 7 to be located at 1015 7th Street, NW. I seem to recall an alcohol application license a while ago but it seems they are a lot closer to opening now. If they are half as good as the Passenger it’ll be great news.

Iron Horse Opens in Penn Quarter Thursday Night

January 13th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Bars, Neighborhoods - Chinatown/Penn Quarter | 22 Comments »

IMG_1957

It was back in April 2009 that we first learned about Iron Horse Tavern coming to Penn Quarter. I’m happy to report that they’ll be opening up at 507 7th Street, NW Thursday evening. There was still some construction going on when I stopped by but when they finish up on Thurs. they’ll be open. After Thursday regular hours will start at 4pm. There will be 20 beers on draft and no bottles or cans. This is strictly a tavern and no food will be served though they do have an agreement where food can be brought in by customers or ordered from nearby Austin Grill or DC Chophouse.

It is a two level bar with the upstairs being more like an “upscale neighborhood hangout” according to GM Daniel Williams. The downstairs, with a capacity of 177, is filled with games and two connected bars. One will be open right away and will feature skeeball, shuffleboard, jukebox, and big buck hunter. The adjoining smaller bar is tentatively titled the “Story Bar” which will not open for another week or so and will feature photographs from a bicycle trip taken by City Bikes owner, Charlie McCormick. Owner Geoff Dawson envisions that the space will include photographs and postcards from others who take trips around the world. Mr. Dawson is also the president of Bedrock Companies which includes Aroma, Atomic Billiards, Bedrock Billiards, Buffalo Billiards, CarPool, Continental, and Mackey’s.

You can call 202-347-7665 to confirm what time they open tomorrow.

While it wasn’t completely finished when I stopped by, this certainly looks like it will be a nice addition to the Chinatown/Penn Quarter neighborhood. Photos after the jump. Read Full Post

Person Pushed into side of train, falls onto platform at Gallery Place/Chinatown Metrorail station

November 30th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Chinatown/Penn Quarter, Transit | 7 Comments »

but of course...
Photo by PoPville Flickr user cacophony76

From metro:

Metro Transit Police are investigating a preliminary report of an individual who was pushed into the side of a Red Line train. The train was stopped and servicing the platform at the Gallery Place/Chinatown Metrorail station at about 3:35 p.m. today (Nov. 30) at the time of the incident. The train was headed in the direction of Shady Grove.

The preliminary investigation indicates that two young men were involved in an altercation and one individual pushed the other into the side of the last car of a six-car train. The young man fell to the platform and was aided by local emergency medical first responders. The individual, a minor, was transported to a nearby hospital.

The incident train was held at the scene of the accident for 45 minutes. Customers on the Red Line experienced delays as a result of the incident. Red Line trains were taking turns sharing one track (single-tracking) between Farragut North and Judiciary Square Metrorail station while the train was being held at the scene.

Something Going on At Gallery Place/Metro Center Metro Stations?

October 6th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Chinatown/Penn Quarter, Transit | 22 Comments »

but of course…, originally uploaded by cacophony76.

Anyone having problems here? A reader writes that they saw some sort of explosion at Gallery Place/Chinatown.

@dcfireems from twitter says:
“Metro Ctr / Gallery Place smoke in tunnel and/or fire under train Metro Ctr being evac”.

@metroopensdoors says:
“Red Line: Trains sharing same track btwn Judiciary Sq. & Farragut N. due to smoke on tracks at Metro Center. Delays in both directions.”

More as details become available.

photo(3)

Update: 9:50am: From a reader:

“I was actually at the station when it happened — a little before nine this morning, the red line train heading to metro center was slowly leaving when the station when it seemed to cause a series of loud cracking noises. Each was louder than the next — finally, a loud boom and the station filled with smoke. I was able to get a picture of he cloud coming through the station, but it doesn’t do it justice. Traffic stopped immediately; and, as I caught the orange line, I think I heard the fire alarm go off. What’s really curious about the whole incident is that the train was stopped for a few minutes before leaving, as if they knew something was wrong.”

Another witness:

“I was actually on the train. What happened was at Judiciary Square we had to let a sick passenger off the train. Then pulling out of Gallery Place, there was a mechanical malfunction, followed by stopping and starting of the train and then a series of explosions (with little fire and sparks everywhere) under the first car and the car I was on, and there was smoke in some of the cars. People were freaking out about it, but we got to metro center safely and offloaded and no one was hurt or pushed off the train. (I commend the train operator for keeping everyone calm!)

The other person is right, we did hold at Gallery Place for a few minutes while the train conductor told us that there was a malfunction but she couldn’t let us into the tunnel and we were going to make it to Metro Center and then offload. Shortly after this announcement were the other explosions including the one outside my car, followed by the people yelling to stop the train, be let off, hit the emergency button, etc.”

Update 10:40am  – Metro reports all’s back to normal:

“At 10:12 a.m., normal service has resumed on the Red Line after the removal of an outbound six-car train on the Red Line at Metro Center. The disabled train lost one of its collector shoes. Each train has four collector shoes which connect to the third rail.”

IMG_1822, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

This archway was touched up a while ago and I just noticed the scaffolding was down. I think it looks exactly the same. Does it look more vibrant to you guys? Sunday was a beautiful day to see it again for the first time in a while.

For the record I think it looks great and always has.

Reader Snaps a Great Photo in Chinatown

“Dear PoP,

Something we can all take solace in seeing once in a while…

A DC Parking enforcement vehicle, illegally parked, and getting towed by a parking tow truck in front of the Verizon Center today.”

I hope it wasn’t broken down and was really towed because it was illegally parked. Well, that’d just be the coolest.

“Dear PoP,

I just noticed yesterday there’s a new place, Chinatown Coffeehouse, opened up on H right, NW near the corner of 5th.”

Always happy to hear about more coffee news! I stopped by this weekend and it’s a very comfortable place with a nice vibe going on. A good study/work spot too if you are in the area.
