Metro will advance major rebuilding work over the weekend of January 27-29. The work will begin at 10 p.m. Friday and continue through system closing on Sunday.

Red Line

Crews will continue to advance NTSB-recommended track circuit replacement, a key step toward restoring automatic train operations. This weekend’s work will take place between Dupont Circle and Van Ness, with buses replacing trains between those two stations. Two stations — Woodley Park and Cleveland Park — will be closed, with alternate shuttle service provided.

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing through system closing on Sunday, shuttle buses will replace Red Line trains between Dupont Circle and Van Ness.
Red Line trains will operate between Shady Grove and Van Ness and between Dupont Circle and Glenmont. During daytime hours, every other train from Dupont Circle will turn back at Silver Spring.
Woodley Park and Cleveland Park stations will be closed.
Customers traveling through the work zone should allow about 25 minutes of additional travel time. All other customers should allow about 10 minutes of additional travel time.

Back in April 2011 we learned that a Chipotle hoped to move into the former Cereal Bowl space (and Starbucks before that) at 3420 Connecticut Ave, NW next to the Uptown Theater. Thanks to a reader for sending the heads up that it’s official.

Exec. chef David Ashwell has left Le Zinc to raise his growing family (second son just born) in wife Kirsty’s native Northern Ireland in a small town outside Belfast. We wish David well in his new life and thank him for his considerable contributions to our successful launch last July.

Joining Le Zinc this week as its new executive chef is Janis McLean, who for the last three years was the exec. chef at 15ria. Prior to that, Janis was the exec. chef at the Morrison Clark Inn restaurants and also served in the same capacity at redDog Cafe and Red Sage.

McLean received her training at L’Academie de Cuisine, followed by five years at La Varenne Ecole de Cuisine in Burgundy, France, where she taught classes and eventually became director of U.S operations. She is a member of Women Chefs and Restaurateurs, Les Dames d’Escoffier and the American Institute of Wine and Food.

We are very happy to have Janis come aboard and look forward to a promising future.

New changes coming next week. Janis is going to do a red wine-braised duck leg salad on hearty greens with a port vinaigrette; rabbit with prunes; whole roasted trout, and a lot more lunchtime salads and a daily quiche.

Upstairs: (seating for around 40)…very cool tables, light fixtures, full service bar. Complete menu of $18 mussel frites and then sandwiches/entrees/dessert waffles. Management says they are going to roll out brunch services in a few weeks to become more regular in the future. They are hoping to capitalize on the lack of good brunch spots in Cleveland Park (besides Dino, which happens to be next door). If you’re familiar w the former Sabores location, this upstairs seating area has roll up windows and will also have some outdoor seating when it gets warmer.

Downstairs, St Arnold’s Underground, is cool and a different atmosphere…basically a classier version of Atomic Billiards (also next door). Most exciting thing down here is a separate menu featuring New York Crif Dog style hotdogs…about 10 different variations from the classic (wrapped in bacon, deep fried) to the “Vietnamese.” $5 each.

Walked past St. Arnold’s on the way to work this morning. Brown paper is off the windows, tables and chairs are set up, and a cleaning crew was in. A woman walking out of the place told me that they would be “open on Thursday or Friday.” Place looks great!

St. Arnold’s is located in the former Sabores space next to Dino at 3435B Connecticut Ave, NW. This will be their 2nd location. Their first spot is located in Dupont at 1827 Jefferson Place, NW.
