From an email:

“On Friday starting at 5pm we are holding a “Free For All” at the Warehouse and I think you are going to want to be there.

We are embarking on another round of improvements at the Warehouse Theater – new bathrooms, dressing rooms, etc. – and its time to find a new home for much of the stuff that we have accumulated over the last 14 years. We have lots of furniture to give away, plus a piano, an old kegerator, housewares, assorted building materials and flats, and much, much more!

So check out the blog that we just set up – http://warehousefreeforall.blogspot.com/
- and mark your calendar. (The blog isn’t complete yet – I’ll be adding stuff all the way up through Friday afternoon.)”

You had me at kegerator… I’ll def. be checking it out! Warehouse is located at 1021 7th Street NW.

Bar 7 on 7th Street, NW Opens Sunday Night

March 8th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Bars, Neighborhoods - Mt. Vernon Square | 3 Comments »

On Feb. 1st I mentioned that Bar 7 was coming soon near the recently opened Passenger at 1021 7th St. NW. I took a shot of the inside through the glass door to give an idea of the inside. However I noticed a small article in the Post this morning:

“Performing into the wee hours of Sunday morning, DJs Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani graced the opening night of Bar 7 on Seventh Street NW, with a set that ping-ponged between elegance and jubilance. With bubbling synths and paddle-ball bass lines, each song that was pumped through the subwoofers felt like an old favorite even if you’d never heard it before.”

I’m gonna need to stop by to get a proper feel for this spot. Stay tuned for early reviews next week.

The Craigslist ad says:

“If you’re looking for a prime apartment, right at Gallery place and moments from the Mt Vernon Square Washington DC area, you won’t find anything better than The V at CityVista.

* Kitchen pantry
* Granite countertops, maple cabinets, Whirlpool Gold appliances
* Walk-in Closet
* Washer and dryer in each unit”

I’ve been intrigued by these apartments since there is so much retail going in underneath. Does $2915 sound reasonable for a 2 bedroom here?

Sorta Hidden Sculpture From Mt. Vernon Busboys & Poets

February 22nd, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Mt. Vernon Square, art | 3 Comments »

With the new yellow sculpture at the corner of 5th and K Streets, NW (see post above) this smaller piece really gets overshadowed. Literally. It’s pretty neat though. How’s that for a sophisticated critique…

Bar 7 Coming Soon to 7th St, NW

February 1st, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Bars, Coming and Going, Neighborhoods - Chinatown/Penn Quarter, Neighborhoods - Mt. Vernon Square | 11 Comments »

IMG_2291

When the Passenger opened up at 1021 7th St. NW, near the Convention Center, it instantly improved that stretch of 7th Street. I was excited to see coming soon signs for the nearby Bar 7 to be located at 1015 7th Street, NW. I seem to recall an alcohol application license a while ago but it seems they are a lot closer to opening now. If they are half as good as the Passenger it’ll be great news.

Dear PoP – What the Helen of Troy is This?

January 26th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Dear PoP, Neighborhoods - Mt. Vernon Square, What the Helen of Troy is This? | 9 Comments »

IMG_0100

“Dear PoP,

I live in mount vernon square and i was wondering if you know what the deal is with the metal tracks in the street/side walk around the convention center. they’re on 7th and 9th and on the sidewalks around the building.

i’ve thought of lots of different explanations (both practical and ridiculous) but i’m not really sure. any ideas?”

I am completely stumped. But first reader that gets it (and I can confirm it) gets a free PoP t-shirt. What the Helen of Troy is This?

Good Deal or Not? 1140 sq. ft. 2 Level Unit Edition

This condo is located at 936 N Street, NW:

The flier says:

“STUNNING 2 BEDROOM, 2 BATH, 1140 sq. ft. 2 LEVEL UNIT. HARDWOOD FLOORS WITH RECESSED LIGHTING. OPEN KITCHEN W/ STAINLESS STEEL APPLIANCES, GRANITE COUNTERTOPS, BREAKFAST BAR & TOP OF THE LINE CABINETS. BATHS ARE COMPLETE WITH MARBLE COUNTERS AND WALK- IN CLOSETS. CLOSE TO METRO, CONVENTION CENTER SHOPS.”

You can find more info and photos here.

Well, the description sounds really nice but I’m a little disappointing with the photos. I’m really surprised there are no photos of the bedrooms. I think yesterday someone said that they were tired of seeing 2 bedrooms under 900 square feet. Given that this one is 1140 square feet do you think $479,900 sounds reasonable?

Sculpture at 5th and K Streets, NW

November 18th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Mt. Vernon Square, Sculpture | 19 Comments »

IMG_0692, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

We looked at this sculpture outside the City Visa Busboys & Poets last week. But as promised I wanted to show some daytime photos of it. When I stopped by there was still a bit of work going on. But I gotta agree with some original comments, I’m not sure I’m feeling this one. I’ll be very curious to check it out when it’s completely finished.

PoP Preview – The Passenger

November 17th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Bars, Neighborhoods - Mt. Vernon Square, Restaurants - Mt. Vernon Square | 21 Comments »

IMG_0840

The Passenger bar is located in the former Warehouse space at 1021 7th St. NW near the Convention Center. I was able to attend a media preview Tuesday evening. The bar opens to the public on Wed. at 5pm. This venture is from Tom and Derek Brown, Tom was most recently in charge of the bar at Cork and Derek oversaw the bar program at the Gibson. Paul Ruppert from Room 11 is also a partner. The space has maintained the warehouse feel:

IMG_0837

Though there are more exciting things to come after tomorrow’s grand opening. Over the weekend they hope to open up the “train room” which will be able to host overflow and private parties:

IMG_0828

And in January they will be opening up an additional room, The Columbia Room, which will be reservation only and will feature a mixologist who can make drinks for up to 20 people. I spoke to owners Tom and Derek:

IMG_0833
Derek left, Tom right hand side

Tom said that he envisions the space as a neighborhood bar. They were less interested in a gimmick and more interested in focusing on the fundamentals of a good bar. As such they will have 25 wines by the glass, 15 different cans of beer, and four beers on tap, in addition to specialty cocktails including gin punch which I may or may not have sampled between one and six…

While there is not a big kitchen there will be some food options. There will be Spanish Olives ($3), Marcona Almonds ($3), Chili Half Smoke ($7), Kimchi Hot Dog ($7) and Paninis ($10).

One other question I had was how did they come up with their tag-line, “God Save the District”. Tom told me “that is our Don’t Mess With Texas. We wanted to create a DC place not import a NY place to DC”. And the name The Passenger was inspired by an Iggy Pop song. I definitely feel like this place has very little pretension. I’m excited to see it when all the extra rooms open up and I’m equally excited to see what type of crowd it attracts. For sure it will fill the gap of neighborhood-type bar on 7th Street.

G & J Deli Becoming Henry’s Soul Cafe

November 17th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Coming and Going, Neighborhoods - Mt. Vernon Square, Restaurants, Restaurants - Mt. Vernon Square | 9 Comments »

IMG_0694

When I walked by this weekend the space was looking pretty nice but I didn’t know if the Deli was reopening or a new spot was coming in. Yesterday afternoon The Triangle posted the scoop:

“G & J Deli at 317 K Street NW is closing and will reopen in several weeks as Henry’s Soul Cafe.”

Also interesting to note is that Henry’s Soul Cafe is currently located at 1704 U St., NW. I’ll have to check to see if they are moving or just opening up a second location.

Judging Restaurants – KC Pit BBQ (Reader Request)

“Dear PoP,

Has anyone tried these guys out? – http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/656541

The rig is pretty impressive, but more importantly what about the food? Would love to know who has the best BBQ here in the city. I live in the Bloomingdale neighborhood and it would rock to have a BBQ place close by. There is a BBQ place on RI Ave by the Getty Station but really doesn’t look like it does any business…nor does it look sanitary. Would love to hear what people have to say.”

Wow, this looks pretty cool. Mt. Vernon Triangle blog wrote about it here. It is located on the corner of 6th 4th and New York Ave, NW. DC Pit BBQ is Georgia based but features Kansas City Style BBQ. Anyone give them a try yet?

Ed. Note: We’ve previously discussed BBQ spots here, and here and here and here.
