Rowhouse Fire Wed. Night on 700 block of Fairmont Street, NW

From a reader:

“The photo was taken at the corner of Sherman and Fairmont. The fire was out and most firefighters were packing up and leaving when I got there at around 720 pm.”

In case anyone was wondering what all the sirens were at that time. Glad to hear that the fire was put out quickly.

Dear PoP – Police Activity at Warder and Quincy

March 16th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Crime - Stories, Neighborhoods - Park View, Neighborhoods - Petworth | 9 Comments »

“Dear PoP,

When I was walking home from the metro around 5:30 last night, I saw a number of police cars race up Rock Creek Church and New Hampshire to the intersection of Warder and Quincy. By the time I caught up with them, there were about 6 police cars blocking traffic on Warder and groups of policemen were walking up and down the street. I didn’t get close enough to figure out what was going on. Do any of your readers know what happened?”

Haven’t seen anything from MPD yet. Anyone happen to catch what happened?

Dear PoP – No More Entrees at Looking Glass Lounge

March 10th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Bars, Neighborhoods - Park View, Neighborhoods - Petworth | 45 Comments »

“Dear PoP,

Looking glass dropped their entrees. Their excuse: we are transitioning away from being a restaurant. Hmm. I’m disappointed.”

Did many folks go to Looking Glass Lounge, on Georgia Ave at Princeton Streets, NW, for the entrees? Personally I’ve always been a big fan of the grilled cheese and tomato. Will you miss the entrees?

Dear PoP – What are These Cables?

March 2nd, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Dear PoP, Neighborhoods - Park View | 8 Comments »

Fiber Cable 06

“Dear PoP,

Not sure if you guys noticed, but last week there were contractors installing fiber optic cables under Quebec Pl. I just noticed that there is a new orange fiber cable going up the telephone pole in the back of my house. I was wondering if you know what the purpose of the cable is? Is it for the future-proofing/regular maintenance or are there new services going to be offered? Last I heard FiOS is not available in D.C. due to politics.

I noticed one of the installation trucks said Danella Construction on it. I looked at ther website http://www.danella.com and they didn’t have any projects listed for D.C. other than an old project they did downtown.

I also drove down a few other alleys it appears the cables are on every alley along Warder St. and continuing up 7th St. From the pictures you can see the cables are not hooked up to anything on the pole yet.”

Anyone know what the story is on these orange cables? Have you seen them around your house/apartment as well?

Dear PoP – More info on Bruce Monroe School Demolition

February 23rd, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in DC Government, Dear PoP, Development, Neighborhoods - Park View, Neighborhoods - Pleasant Plains | 22 Comments »

DSCN1659

A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the current Bruce Monroe School Demolition schedule and proposed plans. A group has emerged opposing a parking lot. They write:

Dear PoP,

Demolition at the Bruce Monroe Elementary School (bounded by Georgia Avenue, Irving Street and Columbia Road) is now scheduled to be complete in late April. At a community meeting this week, the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development announced a proposal to convert the majority of the parcel into a surface parking lot for commuters, who are likely to be employees of one of the large employers on this side of town. The parking lot is to be an interim use, which the District says could last 3-5 years.

Many neighbors of the site think a surface parking lot, for however long, is a very bad idea. This will do nothing to benefit the community, will be harmful to the environment, and the revenue it raises — which the District would share — will not be targeted to any particular use in the neighborhood. By contrast, the Gage-Eckington School in LeDroit Park was nearly the same size as the Bruce Monroe parcel, demolition was begun at about the same time, and yet the residents of that community are about to enjoy a permanent 3-acre park with an urban vegetable farm.

The next community meeting on this topic is March 8. In the meantime, please help strengthen the opposition by visiting http://www.stopthelot.com to learn more and sign an online petition.

Pleasant Plains and Park View deserve better.

– The Stop the Lot Coalition

Does anyone actually support the idea of a parking lot here?

Horses Ass Award and What is This Building?

February 22nd, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Buildings, Neighborhoods - Park View, horses ass award | 11 Comments »

Horses Ass Award has to go the building at Sherman Ave and Park Road, NW. We’ve been teased with some progress but it has been in its current state for quite a while. It is truly an eyesore and worthy of this horses ass award.

And while I was on Sherman, I’ve walked by this building a million times (Sherman and Harvard), does anyone know what it exactly is?

Progress on Senior Wellness Center on Georgia Ave, New Shaw Library Slowly Coming Along

January 28th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Buildings, Neighborhoods - Park View, Neighborhoods - Shaw | 2 Comments »

IMG_2107

I thought I’d check in on a couple of new buildings rising that I frequently pass on my walks.  The Senior Center rising at Georgia and Newton in Park View is really starting to take shape.  I think it’s really going to add to the improvement of that section of Georgia.  The new library going up in Shaw on Rhode Island near 9th has changed too much since the last time I looked. But plans are for it to still open in spring 2010.

Warder Street in Park View Getting Another New Condo Building

January 26th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Development, Neighborhoods - Park View, Real Estate - Park View | 6 Comments »

IMG_2105

We’ve looked at the two relatively new buildings on the 3500 block of Warder Street, NW. The rundown house in the middle has been torn down and a new condo building is set to go in the space. I wonder if they’ll paint it yellow? I’ll be sure to update as the building gets constructed and the units go for sale.

Quick Update on Sports Bar Coming to 3632 Georgia Ave. (Next To Looking Glass Lounge)

January 5th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Coming and Going, Neighborhoods - Park View, Neighborhoods - Petworth | 10 Comments »

DSCN0864

Someone in the comments yesterday asked for an update on the Sports Bar coming to 3632 Georgia Ave. I emailed the project manager and he told me that they expect all permits to be in order in around 3 weeks at which time construction will get underway. I’m also told they are finalizing their menu which I will post when it is completed. It sadly does not look like they’ll be open in time for the Super Bowl but hopefully shortly thereafter.

For those that haven’t heard of this development, you can read an interview I did with the owner and project manger of the Green Room Sports Bar here.

CM Graham Says Ward 1 Park Projects Back on Track

December 17th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in DC Government, Neighborhoods - Columbia Heights, Neighborhoods - Ledroit Park, Neighborhoods - Park View, parks | 3 Comments »

IMG_2373

Council Member Jim Graham sends an update of Ward 1 parks in an email:

“After the D.C. Council’s vote on Tuesday, December 14, to rescind $83 million in Parks and Recreation Contracts many of you called and wrote to me asking what that meant for Justice Park, Park View and LeDroit Park.

I am happy to report that these parks construction projects are already “back on track.” The Deputy Mayor for Economic Development has assured me that the $750K Justice Park project and the $1.2 million Park View project will be overseen by Allen Lew − Executive Director of the Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization − and will move forward. This is excellent news given the great speed and success with which Mr. Lew has handled school renovations and constructions.

The final project, the LeDroit Park (former Gage school transformation) will remain in the Deputy Mayor’s portfolio and the contract for the reconstruction will be re-bid and move forward.”

Location: Looking Glass Lounge, 3634 Georgia Ave, NW

Local comics Reggie Melbrough and Mike Curran host a comedy evening at The Looking Glass Lounge. Sign up is from 7pm to 7:45pm. Comics will have ten minute sets and yes, there are open mic opportunities for some of you looking for embarrassment! At the end of the show, three people will be selected from the crowd to try their hand at stand-up, one joke a piece. The best joke gets a $25 gift certificate to be used at The Looking Glass Lounge or The Wonderland Ballroom.”

Dear PoP – Petworth/Park View Dog Parks?

“Dear PoP,

After a long separation, my dog will be moving back in with me (from my parents’) over the holidays. I’m relatively new to the neighborhood, and have seen a few dogs around, but I’m curious if there are some suggestions about dog friendly parks in the Petworth/Parkview area?

Also, I’d love to know if folks have any suggestions for dog walkers, vets, and boarding. I know – it’s a lot of dog questions, but I appreciate any help I can get! Thanks a lot!”

Well, we had some good recommendations for dog park/dog friendly spots here. Eric Nuzum wrote about doggie day care here. Can anyone recommend some good dog walkers, vets and/or boarding spots?
