“Spacious 950 square foot two bedroom apartment located in the heart of Shaw. Newly remodeled bathroom and kitchen. Gorgeous hardwood floors. Metro one block away. Shaw metro entrance located on the north side of R Street, between 7th and 8th Streets. Green and Yellow lines.”

This looks like it might be a great deal – $1395 for a 2 bedroom sound reasonable for this location?

“Dear PoP,

My housemate was held up at gunpoint last night in the alley between 10th & 11th, between French & S. She asked me to spread the word to neighbors – the attackers were 2 African-American females, approximately 15-18 years old. (She did file a police report but I don’t have all the details that she gave the police.)”

There was also a mugging at 14th and T Streets, Monday night. Just a reminder to always be aware of your environment. While you can’t prevent every mugging, staying alert helps.

I happened to have run into some neighbors who live nearby this intersection. When they first requested a traffic light here they were told that it was not possible because there weren’t enough traffic accidents yet. Frustrating logic.

I think this is one of the homes previously owned by Shiloh Baptist church that recently went for sale. I’m not sure if it sold or not but I’m cautiously optimistic about the construction/garbage bin out front.

Lots of readers sent in word about the failed Radio One project to Shaw near Howard University. Washington Business Journal writes:

“Radio One would have been the anchor tenant in Broadcast Center One, a project that was slated to bring 103,000 square feet of office space, close to 25,000 square feet of retail, 180 apartments for rent (45 of which would be reserved as affordable housing) and a 195-spot underground parking garage to the northeast corner of Seventh and S streets NW. D.C. had committed to providing the land — which sits directly atop an entrance to the Shaw-Howard University Metro station — and $23 million in subsidies for the deal in 2008, a package worth an estimated $30 million.”

The journal mentions that the United Negro College Fund may move into this spot.

I walked past the Mocha Lounge yesterday and although it was closed, it looked really inviting- lots of pillows, armchairs, sort of a Euro cafe vibe (at least to my caffeine-starved brain). Do you know if they’re actually serving coffee there yet? Yelp says the bar area has opened but I’m more interested in the espresso.”

When I last wrote about Mocha Lounge, located at 944 Florida Ave, NW, a few commenters mentioned that it was open for a new year’s party. Sadly every time I’ve walked by during the day it has been closed. So for those that live nearby, what’s the scoop here?

There is a fenced off vacant lot on the 900 block of S Street, NW that has me baffled. Was this a playground at one point? What’s the metal structure inside? Anyone know what’s going on here? It seems so random on a traditional street filled with classic rowhouses.

I thought I’d check in on a couple of new buildings rising that I frequently pass on my walks.  The Senior Center rising at Georgia and Newton in Park View is really starting to take shape.  I think it’s really going to add to the improvement of that section of Georgia.  The new library going up in Shaw on Rhode Island near 9th has changed too much since the last time I looked. But plans are for it to still open in spring 2010.

“They painted over all the amazing quotes and phrases like “bienvenu a shaw” and I am bummed! That building brightened my day whenever I drove past. I am glad that it will hopefully be something but sad it will no longer have the same local flavor.”

Here’s what part of it used to look like. If this is a sign that the building will become an actually business or home than I’ll be pretty excited but if it remains vacant then I think this is a tragedy.

We learned back in September that Asmara had closed its doors. Located at 900 Florida Avenue, NW (across the street from the 9:30 Club) this space, according to the alcohol license, will become Bella Restaurant featuring: “dancing and live bands”. More info as it becomes available.

Ever since I learned that Mocha Lounge would be reopening at 944 Florida Ave, NW (near 9:30 Club) I’ve been checking for progress. I stopped by last weekend and it’s looking really close. I spoke to a neighbor who told me that the owner said he was hoping to get things rolling in 2 weeks. Stay tuned.

I can’t believe the park has been there (1651 11th St, NW between Q and R) for a year already. If you dig the design on the sign you can buy a shirt with the same design here in recognition of the one year anniversary and to support the park.
