Lily’s Cafe located at 5505 Colorado Ave, NW has come under new management and is renamed Colorado Cafe (as of a week ago.) Management remains super nice and have expanded their hours. They are now open Mon. – Fri. 7-7 , Sat. 8-7, and Sun. 8-4. Good news for North Country.

And remember the great restaurant, Colorado Kitchen? This is what the space looks like now. Crazy! Of course the owner of the former Colorado Kitchen, Gillian Clark, will be opening a new spot in the Donatelli building at the Petworth Metro.

Sadly More Crime To Report in North Country (and Columbia Heights)

May 5th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Crime, Crime - Stories, Neighborhoods - Columbia Heights, North Country | No Comments »

Twitter user JTNT reports:

“Multiple shots fired on 7th St NW b/t Gallatin and Hamilton. No fatalities, but at least one individual was struck.

The scene as viewed upstairs in my house, complete with many evidence markers, mostly identifying bullets. I heard at least 10 shots.”

And in Columbia Heights, a reader writes:

“I just moved in to a condo on the 1100 block of Columbia Rd and last night around 6:15 I saw a guy running down our street east (away from the 13-1400 block) being chased by a bicycle cop. The cop tackled him right across the street from my house and then literally 20-30 cops screeched into the street, sirens blaring and guns drawn. It was a pretty spectacular show of force by DCPD. They proceeded to close down the street and search our block for what I’m assuming is a gun as one of the officers told me the suspect had been seen with a gun. Do you have any more details on what happened? Quite the welcome to the neighborhood!”

Yikes, I hadn’t heard about this one. Anyone have anymore details?

The scene from Columbia Road yesterday:

Lost Dog in North Country

May 3rd, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in North Country, Pets | No Comments »

berdina-adopt me, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

From a reader:

“I am writing to ask if you would mind mentioning on your blog that a dog in foster care on behalf of the Washington Animal Rescue League is missing. Berdina is a brindle/gray/white pit bull mix who is VERY friendly and was last seen in the area of Longfellow and Blair Streets, NW on April 21. The league’s staff and volunteers have been looking for her and posting fliers, but with no luck so far. She weighs about 50 pounds and was last seen wearing a red, white, and blue “Obama” collar with a red rabies tag. We’re really worried about her. Anything you could do to help us get the word out would be very much appreciated. I have attached a picture of Berdina. She’s a sweet girl! Anyone with information can call Mary at WARL (202-375-7755).”

The flier says:

“Lovely 4 bedroom 2 full bath cape cod in NW. Kitchen was remodeled with granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances and cherry cabinets. New Bath with glass bowl sink, river rock accents. Gleaming hardwood floors throughout. 3 season porch plus enclosed patio. Garage and off-street parking. Large bedrooms, separate dining room, lower level den that walks out to yard.”

More info and photos found here.

I think the home looks quite nice but it’s a bit too far north for me. Of course the price reflects that and it can be yours for $469,000. Sound reasonable?

Dear PoP – What’s Going on In North Country

December 16th, 2008 | By Prince Of Petworth in Dear PoP, Development, North Country | 6 Comments »

“I am new to the area and was wondering if you’ve heard of any future developments in the upper georgia avenue/brightwood area. so far, its a pretty decent neighborhood (with its minor “activity”, but could be much better with the right services – say restaurants/bars and retail. i’m thinking that a really good coffee/breakfast spot could help.your thoughts?”

You’re in luck as there is an ANC meeting Wed. night discussing some new development in North Country. (Also be sure to check out Brightwood Bistro.)

From a reader:

Description: ANC 4B will hold a special public meeting on Wednesday, December 17, at 7 pm, at Takoma Rec Center, 300 Van Buren Street, NW. Dear PoP – Where Do I Live?

November 3rd, 2008 | By Prince Of Petworth in Dear PoP, North Country | 12 Comments »

“I’m writing because I live in a spot that has no clear neighborhood identity. It’s kind of North Petworth/East Brightwood/West Fort Totten. I’ve seen some maps that call it Manor Park but nobody knows where that is.  Where do I live?  My address is the 5200 block of N. Capitol Street NW.”

These questions are always quite difficult to answer.  I decided to consult famed mixologist, Franz Heffenauer, who’s lived in DC well over 3 years.   Yeah, he didn’t know either.   I would say, since you are south of Kennedy Street, that you live in Northern Petworth.  However, I find it easier to say that you live in North Country.  North Country is a beautiful place that many folks in the city aren’t aware exists.  There are beautiful homes throughout North Country and all of the folks I’ve spoken with who live up there are fiercely proud of it.  But if your friends press you for a “proper” neighborhood, I’d go with North Petworth.

Brightwood Bistro Gets Good Review in the Post

September 24th, 2008 | By Prince Of Petworth in North Country, Restaurants | No Comments »

DSCN1832, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

Thanks to a reader for sending the link. The article starts off:

“Washington diners often complain of a lack of good neighborhood joints. Brightwood Bistro (5832 Georgia Ave. NW, 202-545-5014) aims to be part of the solution.

The restaurant replaced the short-lived Meridian in August. The ambitious bistro is a venture of five friends, all of whom grew up in the Brightwood neighborhood. “We’ve lived in this area our whole lives and we’ve never had a nice sit-down restaurant. You had to go to Georgetown or downtown,” says Daymon Anderson, general manager and co-owner. “So when the opportunity presented itself to us, we jumped on it.”

Colorado Kitchen (Inventory?) For Sale!

June 25th, 2008 | By Prince Of Petworth in North Country, Restaurants | No Comments »

Colorado Kitchen, originally uploaded by christaki.

Sometimes I hate it when my Scuttlebutt turns out to be true. Thanks to an eagle eyed reader who spotted this auction sale announcement. Rasmus Auctioneers is calling this sale “Super Short Notice” and will be auctioning off “inventory”, exclusively on the internet, Monday, July 7th, 2008 at 11:00am. The site says: “Colorado Kitchen a popular DC eatery has come to the end of its lease and the building is slated for redevelopment. Complete inventory posted next Tuesday”. This is really sad news. Located at 5515 Colorado Ave NW, Colorado Kitchen was one of the greatest spots up in North Country. Some people have voiced complaints about the owner/chef but I think there is almost universal agreement that the food was spectacular. Colorado Kitchen – you will be missed. Thank you for your many years of great food.
