Never a dull moment along H Street, NE. Because of the rapid changes I’ve recruited Nick and Amelia (of Cabin Fever video fame) to be an extra set of eyes and ears for me. Nick sends in photos of the newly opened Liberty Tree restaurant located at 1016 H Street, NE. You can see their menu here.

As always, on a scuttlebutt post it is not confirmed but I believe this news has a high likelihood to be accurate. In other words I didn’t just hear this from a random lady at the grocery store… One more caveat is that I’m not exactly sure that this is the correct building. It could be another one from the 1200 block of H Street, NE. So here’s exactly what I heard – the owner of the bar Wisdom (which incidentally we just checked out a couple of weeks ago) has purchased a property next to Granville Moore’s located at 1238 H Street, NE. I hear that he is going to lease out the lower level to Granville Moore’s and the top level will host a bar, presumably similar to the style of Wisdom.

Again I’m not sure if this means The Martini Lounge will no longer exist or if it is a different building. I promise to update with more info as it becomes available. But this is the fun of running a blog – I can share with you interesting rumors as I hear them. I do believe this rumor will turn out to be true but like all scuttlebutt you have to take it with a grain of salt.

I mentioned a few new places coming to H St. NE last Monday. At the time I said I had a few more that were new to me as well. Pictured above at 1016 H Street, NE will be Liberty Tree. The alcohol application says it will be a seafood and brick oven pizzeria.

And at 1110 H St. NE will be a new restaurant (to be named later) featuring Asian cuisine.

And finally is the new spot, Vendetta, that is coming to 1350-1362 H St. NE. I think I may have mentioned it before because I was pretty psyched to see that it’s jukebox will feature opera and Italian music.

SOVA is located at 1359 H Street, NE. I suppose this is more of a coffee spot/wine bar but I’ve heard lots of good things about it. I see on the window they also offer pastries and desserts, are there other food options? It also looks like they have some nice tea options. Any fans out there? How are the prices?

Always something exciting going on over on the H Street, NE corridor. I noticed this sign on the 1200 block when I hit one of their other great new great spots, Little Miss Whiskey’s Golden Dollar (1104 H St, NE).

I’m super intrigued about SOUK. I’m not sure if it’s going to be a market or restaurant or both but I love Mediterranean Cuisine so stay tuned for an update on this spot when they open.

The Washington Business Journal broke the great news on Friday:

“The chef and restaurateur, who most recently worked as kitchen manager at Sticky Rice on H Street NE, is striking out on his own in the same neighborhood. He will open Toki Underground in a 950-square-foot space at 1234 (yeah, that’s not a typo) H St. NE, above popular neighborhood bar The Pug.”

This is phenomenal news. Noodle shops are a great inexpensive option for good grub. I can’t wait for them to open!

Napa 1015 is located at 1015 H Street, NE. I’m very curious about this spot as I’ve heard very mixed reviews. Some folks seem to love it and some hate it. I’ve heard very few mediocre comments. You can see the menu here. So what’s the scoop – thumbs up or down?

If I stay away from H Street, NE for a few weeks there’s always new development when I go back on a walkabout. I was excited to see this new pizza spot, Inspire Pizzeria, coming to 650 H Street, NE. The sign says gourmet pizza:

I was at Big Bear this weekend and someone mentioned that Naby’s Island Restaurant, located at 1128 H Street, NE, has some of the best Jamaican food in town. I, of course, am a huge Sweet Mango Cafe fan. Then as I was walking back up Georgia Ave. I spotted Negril’s Eatery located at 2301 Georgia Ave., NW.

So first are there any fans of these two spots? Secondly, where’s your favorite Jamaican spot in town?

I mentioned this spot in the H Street, NE PoPtrekker last week. Well, I was just able to attend their media preview and it is pretty damn sweet. The H Street Country Club is located at 1335 H Street, NE. It has two very distinct feels. On the first floor, pictured above, you have a more bar/restaurant type setting with a bar near the entrance and further to the back you have two pool tables, two shuffle board tables, some tvs, a jukebox, and some skee ball.

Upstairs is where it gets really interesting. Why? Because that is where you can find the indoor putt putt. Which is as insane in reality as it sounds. But it is awesome. It is a 9 hole course with names like U Street, K Street Lego Lawyers, The Awakening of Marion Barry etc. It will cost $7 dollars.

Upstairs, in addition to the putt putt course, you’ll also find another bar, another jukebox, and tables.

I didn’t have the chance to sample any food but you can see the menu here. I did however sample the guava margarita that very nearly kicked my ass. I imagine the drinks will make putt putt slightly more interesting. You can see the drink menu here.

I have to say this place really seems like it is set up to be a huge success. And that I think will probably be it’s only flaw. Given the fact that this place is so unique, I really believe it’s going to be smashed crowded. I suspect that may get a bit frustrating if you’re waiting on line for the putt putt.

Nevertheless, the uniqueness of this spot is surely something to be applauded. Now if only they had a ping pong table…

A commenter mentioned that there are tons of sweet city signs on H Street, NE. And indeed there are. I thought this sign was particularly amusing because Ohio is not generally considered the south. But as I was checking out this spot I noticed that there was a permit in the window.

It seems this spot at 14th and H Streets, NE is slated to return to a functioning restaurant. Apparently it will be called Radius at the Ohio and will be a restaurant with a summer garden and sidewalk cafe. This spot is very close to the great Argonaut restaurant/bar so that section of H Street will be particularly sweet.

A reader said she spoke with the owner of Taqueria Distrito Federal (currently with two locations, 3463 14th St. NW – pictured above, and 805 Kennedy St., NW) who is in the planning stages of opening up a third location on H Street, NE. The reader emphasized that this is just in the planning stages and nothing is concrete at the moment. I didn’t have a chance to follow up with the owner but I’ll be sure to update as this progresses. Well, if it works out I’m sure he’ll have much success. And I certainly wish him that.

Taylor Gourmet located at 1116 H St. NE serves a mean sandwich. Starting today, Thursday 3/26 they will be open every Thursday,Friday & Saturday until 3:30am. Both the store & delivery. I’m always psyched to hear about new late night eating options.

The New York Times just published an article called Chefs Settle Down in ‘the Real D.C.’. They focus on Petworth, Columbia Heights, U Street and H Street, NE. They say:

“In Petworth, Columbia Heights, the U Street district and even the dicier parts of North Capital Hill, a little restaurant revival is under way. Washington neighborhoods that for years were considered too dangerous or too poor for a viable sit-down restaurant are suddenly entertaining quite a few.”
