Judging Restaurants – Mid City Deli

March 11th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Restaurants - Logan Circle | 9 Comments »

Mid City Deli is located at the corner of 14th and P Streets, NW. This is kinda funny as I’ve often admired the sign:

IMG_3149

But I had no idea they were actually open. While I’m obviously not expecting fine dining here, I’m just wondering if this is a good spot to grab an egg sandwich? Anyone ever stop by?

@metrocurean shares the news on twitter that “Ezme is having its grand opening today at 2016 P St, NW”. We spoke about Ezme a few weeks ago. That was a quick arrival!

And in other restaurant news the original Thai Tanic at 1326 14th Street, NW is looking to expand into their second floor.

Judging Restaurants – Churchkey/Birch & Barley

March 9th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Restaurants - Logan Circle | 39 Comments »

IMG_0213

These new spots opened up at 1337 14th Street, NW back in October. We took an early look here. But now that it’s been open for a while a reader wrote in requesting an update. She was curious about Birch & Barley (the restaurant) but I’m also interested in what you think of Churchkey upstairs (primarily a bar though food is also served). Both of these spaces seem to be packed every weekend. Have they lived up to the hype? Have you discovered a new favorite beer? What’s the best dish?

While we’ve known about the opening for a while, the finished space looks great. I’m especially liking the sign.

Burger Restaurant Coming to Old Garden District Space at 14th and S Streets, NW

February 7th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Coming and Going, Restaurants - Logan Circle | 14 Comments »

IMG_0877

And in non snowsanity related news – a burger joint is coming to the Old Garden District space located at 14th and S Streets, NW. This is the space that was gonna have a creperie for a hot second. Thanks to all the readers who sent in the word. One reader writes:

“The old garden district at 14th and S will be re-imagined as a beer garden (I’ve always said DC is sorely missing this!) Apparently it will be started by a twenty-something Bates College grad.”

The liquor application says:

“New restaurant serving hamburgers and french fries with 15 seats. Occupancy load of 170. Request a sidewalk cafe with a seating capacity of 67 and summer garden with a seating capacity of 63″.

Sounds pretty sweet, yeah?

Sweet Green Coming Soon to P Street (near 14th) in Logan

January 28th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Coming and Going, Neighborhoods - Logan Circle, Restaurants - Logan Circle | 7 Comments »

IMG_1985

I thought we had discussed the SweetGreen restaurant coming to P Street in Logan just east of 15th but I’ve received a number of emails about it lately. Folks were pretty positive about the Dupont location so this should be a nice addition to P Street. Incidentally a TD Bank is also coming next door:

Judging Restaurants – 15 Ria

January 20th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Restaurants - Logan Circle | 9 Comments »

IMG_2027

15 Ria is located inside the Doubletree Washington at 1515 Rhode Island Ave, NW. I was intrigued by the variety of cuisines offered in the sign above. You can see all their menus here. Any fans out there? In addition to the food, is the bar a good happy hour spot?

HomeMade Pizza Co. Opens Thurs. Free Pizza Tomorrow Afternoon 4 – 7 pm

January 19th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Pizza, Restaurants - Logan Circle | 27 Comments »

IMG_2091

Well, we’ve been monitoring this spot at 1522 14th Street, NW for a few months now. I’m happy to report that HomeMade Pizza Co will be giving out free pizza tomorrow. They also gave some out today but sadly I was too slow in getting the word out. I was able to check it out myself and have to say it’s a pretty unusual operation. I’ve never heard of getting pre-made pizza and then baking it at home. You can see their menu here.

IMG_2101

They were giving out free medium pizzas and caesar salads today (and tomorrow 4 – 7 pm). Get ready to judge me – I ordered mine with pepperoni, onions and anchovies. Mmm. It was actually pretty good but if I’m gonna be honest, I prefer pizzas like Vace, Red Rocks, Pete’s and Moroni & Bros. over this one. It was pretty easy to make though – just put your oven to 425 and cook for 10-15 minutes:

IMG_2103

If anyone else took advantage of the free pizza Tues. or does so on Wed. be sure to let me know what you think. They had slices of fresh cooked pizza, as well, to taste out front. After the jump you can see some photos of the inside (it is a small space as it is takeout only obviously). Read Full Post

Ghana Cafe Finally Re-Opens on 14th Street!

January 5th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Restaurants - Logan Circle | 6 Comments »

IMG_1821

Thanks to a reader for the heads up. We’ve been anticipating the opening on 14th Street south of Rhode Island (near the 7-11) for quite a while. I stopped by Tuesday afternoon and the owner let me take some photos and sent me the menus (which may be tweaked a bit including adding more items). He said they are open as of 6:30pm on Tuesday evening and it will sorta be a soft opening. I have to say the space looks great.

IMG_1817

There’s even an upstairs:

IMG_1819

They also feature beers specially imported from Ghana (apparently the one in the middle really packs a punch):

You can see the menus (including a Vegetarian menu) after the jump. Read Full Post

A Peek at Construction Progress at 14th and Church Street, NW

December 22nd, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Coming and Going, Restaurants - Logan Circle | 3 Comments »

IMG_1468

The signage is still very confusing at the corner of 14th and Church Streets, NW. There is still an application for Cork and Fork on the corner. But there is also a sign for Homemade Pizza that is hiring soon:

IMG_1469

When I originally posted a few weeks ago a commenter said that Homemade pizza will actually be a few storefronts down on Church Street. Anyway, I thought the peek into the construction progress was pretty cool:

IMG_1471

So either Cork and Fork or Homemade Pizza is starting to look good…

Dear PoP – Ghana Cafe Looking Good and Opening Soon

December 8th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Coming and Going, Dear PoP, Restaurants - Logan Circle | 6 Comments »

photo(8)

“Dear PoP,

Walked by Ghana Cafe (14th Street just south of Rhode Island Ave.) on Friday and the owners were sitting inside. They invited us in and showed us around the place which is deceptively large. They are ready to open but are waiting on inspectors. As of Friday they were told that final inspection would take place today.”

I walked by today but sadly the owners weren’t inside. I did get a shot of the inside through the window which did indeed look pretty good. I also caught a saxophonist playing outside which was an added bonus…

photo(10)

Sadly, someone had tagged the front window with graffiti. There is no debate about this graffiti, it is horrible and clearly a crime. Well here’s to hoping they passed the final inspection and open soon!

Dear PoP – Cork and Fork no more on 14th Street NW or is it Just Confusing Signage?

December 6th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Coming and Going, Dear PoP, Restaurants - Logan Circle | 10 Comments »

IMG_1124

“Dear PoP,

It appears that Cork and Fork is leaving all the cork-named wine stores to the Cork Market as now the building at 1522 14th St NW has a sign for “Homemade Pizza” and the new location is represented on this Chicago area resto’s website

Thought you be interested if you hadn’t heard! I’m excited to have a pizza option in the neighborhood that delivers (Pete’s doesn’t make it down as far as Logan, sadly.) It’s set to open next month, according to the website.”

IMG_1122

I guess with the recent opening of nearby Cork Market (no relation) it makes sense that Cork & Fork would reconsider opening in this spot. You can see Homemade Pizza’s menu here. Anyone ever check out their other locations? Think this is a good spot for a pizza place?

Ed. Note: after this was posted Drewlove comments:

“My friend who lives directly above this location tells me that Homemade Pizza is actually around the corner on Church St and that Cork and Fork will be on the storefront on 14th St.”

Crepes Scuttlebutt No Longer Scuttlebutt – Two Crepes Spots Coming to 14th Street near S!

October 25th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - Logan Circle, Restaurants, Restaurants - Logan Circle, Restaurants - Shaw | 22 Comments »

IMG_0296

A couple of weeks ago I said that a Crepes Place was coming to 1736 14th Street, NW in the old Circle Boutique spot. Well I was close, it turns out Point Chaud Cafe & Crepes will be opening up there. I’m not sure if they’re affiliated with Crepes-a-Go-Go but it sounds awesome! And if that weren’t good enough another Crepes spot, Crepes on the Corner, is coming to the corner of 14th and S in the old Garden District space.

According to the Crepes on the Corner Web site:

“Coming to DC December 2009, owners Chef Vincent Bradberry and Joe Carmack of Garden District bring a simple and genuine crêperie to 14th Street, NW. Both are long time Mid-City business guys with a mindset to use local ingredients and produce.

Expect delicious crpes made fresh to order, homemade soups, salads, and a great cup of coffee. This is the place to get a healthy quick bite for lunch, an after dinner dessert crepe, and to stop by as the bars close.”

What are the odds of two crepes spots opening so close to each other?

Coming – Estadio Restaurant to 1520 14th Street, NW

October 22nd, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Coming and Going, Neighborhoods - Logan Circle, Restaurants, Restaurants - Logan Circle, Restaurants - Shaw | 7 Comments »

IMG_1327

The Washington Post’s Tom Sietsema has the scoop:

“The owner of the wine-themed Proof in Penn Quarter has signed a lease for a second restaurant in Logan Circle. Estadio is its name, and Spanish will be its game.”

This is in the spot where the Garden District formerly sold its indoor plants. I’m very much looking forward to following the progress on this place. Stay tuned…

PoP Preview – Birch & Barley and Church Key – Grand Opening Thursday!

October 21st, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Bars, Neighborhoods - Logan Circle, Restaurants, Restaurants - Logan Circle, Restaurants - Shaw | 43 Comments »

IMG_0213

This is a huge spot located at 1337 14th Street, NW (which used to be the old Dakota Cowgirl space). It is actually two concepts. Downstairs is the more restaurant focused Birch & Barley and upstairs is the beer focused Church Key (though there are also dining options for the upstairs space). I was able to take some preview photos on Wed. and the place is looking good – it finally opens to the public on Thursday. Be sure to let me know what you think. For the beer lovers, you will have lots and lots of options (500 bottles, 50 drafts, and 5 casks).

Downstairs:
