When we judged nearby Ethiopian restaurant, Etete, a commenter mentioned Axum, a few storefronts south at 1934 9th Street, NW. I thought it was worth mentioning that the space was recently completely renovated. It’s looking really good.

Crepes Coming to U Street, NW

February 24th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Neighborhoods - U Street, Restaurants - U Street | 16 Comments »

PoP Crepe

Back in the day the owners of the old Maggie Moos at 1301 U Street, NW asked PoPville readers to name the new spot. You guys came up with U Scream Ice Cream and it always makes me smile when I walk past that sign.

Now, I’m happy to report that they will soon be offering crepes.

And thanks to a reader for sending in the above photo.

Ed. Note: Ever since I saw the Larry David Sandwich episode on Curb Your Enthusiasm it has been a dream of mine to have a PoP sandwich. I can’t believe it but that dream has come true. I can now die happy.

Obviously the important thing here is that now we will soon be able to get crepes on U Street. And stay tuned for Point Chaud to open at 14th just south of S Street, NW. (Remember the other crepe place that was supposed to come to 14th and S is now becoming a burger spot.)

Judging Restaurants – Etete

IMG_2840

Etete is located at 1942 9th Street, NW. I recently heard someone mention that this where the Ambassador of Ethiopia sometimes eats. Not sure if that is true but Etete definitely got some love when we judged nearby Dukem back in June of ‘08. You can see Etete’s menu here. Any fans?

Holy Shit, Polly’s Has Closed!!?!?!?

February 22nd, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Bars, Coming and Going, Neighborhoods - U Street, Restaurants - U Street | 63 Comments »

DSCN2847

Wow, this is very sad news. Polly’s was located at 1342 U Street, NW and was one of the first “new” cafes/restaurants to go into U Street. Just in from a reader:

“Tried to go to Polly’s this weekend — turns out they have closed! Tragedy! Do you have any information on this terrible, terrible occurrence?”

And it is confirmed on their Web site:

“Polly’s has closed.
We miss you already.
Check back here soon for a personal note…”

This is really shocking news.

IMG_2142

Bistro La Bonne is located at 1340 U Street, NW. When I first wrote about this space changing from Axis bar and grill many folks were saddened to see Axis go. Now that it’s been open a couple of weeks I’m wondering if anyone has checked out this new bistro? You can see their menus here. Any fans?

I Fear LZ Restaurant Has Possibly Closed

January 14th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Coming and Going, Restaurants - U Street | 7 Comments »

IMG_1864

I’ve always been a pretty big fan of LZ Restaurant located on Florida Ave. just west of 14th. I really enjoyed their gyros. Sadly the last 4 times I’ve walked by the space has been closed. Has anyone else noticed this? It was a pretty tough location that was a bit off the beaten path. I hope it’s just a temporary closing.

Back in May ‘08 we first heard about Patty Boom Boom located at 1359 U Street, NW. This is the Jamaican themed spot owned by the folks behind Marvin. I hear they’ll have a DJ on Thursday as well. I’m looking forward to checking this spot out.

Axis on U Street Becomes Bistro La Bonne

January 5th, 2010 | By Prince Of Petworth in Restaurants - U Street | 32 Comments »

IMG_1812

Well this is completely wild. I had no idea that Axis Bar & Grill closed (their Web site is still working) at 1340 U Street, NW. Thanks to a tweet from @FrenchTwistDC indeed Bistro La Bonne has opened up in that space. Their Web site says:

“U Street finally has its own bistro! Chef Daniel La Bonne has long desired to create a French bistro with his personal touches, and Bistro La Bonne is his latest creation and personal vision. Chef Daniel has set a successful track record in opening and running several restaurants and bistros which earned 2.5 to 3 stars from the Washington Post and a place in the highly regarded Washington Post Dining Guide…

Chef Daniel invites you to join him in this comfortable and popular establishment. The delectable menu and accessible wine list should please anyone who walks into this homey bistro. Chef Daniel prepares menus for the brunch, lunch, dinner, and late night crowds. Chef Daniel La Bonne and the friendly staff will make your visit a quality neighborhood experience.”

You can see their menu here. I think this is great news. Will anyone miss Axis? Do you think a Bistro is a good fit for U Street?

Wow, Masa 14 located at 1825 14th St, NW has only been only been open a few months and it’s already set to expand according to an alcohol beverage application. In addition to adding a summer garden they’d like to open up the second floor as well:

Florida Ave Grill Stops Late Night Service

December 16th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Restaurants - U Street | 25 Comments »

IMG_1429

I first stopped by the Florida Avenue Grill’s front window, located at the corner of 11th and Florida, NW, to admire this holiday sign:

IMG_1426

I quickly went from laughter to tears when I saw this:

IMG_1428

To be honest, I can’t say I was a frequent late night Grill person but I seem to remember some folks loved this as a late night option. Very sad to hear that it’s no longer an option. I can’t imagine what would happen if Ben’s Chili Bowl ever decided to do this… A disappointing development for a legendary DC institution.

Boushey will also talk about his own life as a chief warrant officer for the Army, including when he was injured in the Iraq War in 2004 as the result of a helicopter crash.

Seafood & Crab No More – Bargain World Also Going

December 9th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Coming and Going, Restaurants - U Street, Retail | 25 Comments »

photo(11)

Seafood & Crab located at 1936 14th Street, NW (just south of U) is no more. This spot has brought me a lot of material for the blog over the years. We’ve talked about whether or not Seafood & Crab is a bit redundant, how long it has been having a grand opening and of course judged the food here. I assume many folks won’t shed a tear but I’ll certainly miss the awning.

And across the street there is a big sign mentioning Bargain World is going out of business as well. Tough day for this section of 14th…

Judging Restaurants – Eatonville

November 24th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Restaurants - U Street | 40 Comments »

IMG_0873

Eatonville is located at 2121 14th St NW between V and W Streets. I hadn’t stopped in since they opened and holy cow does the place look awesome! The upstairs and downstairs are equally fantastic. I was at an event so only had some appetizers. But for folks who have gone to eat a proper meal – thumbs up or down? Anything on the menu you highly recommend? You can see their menus here.

Renovated Building at 14th and U St. Leased and Gonna Be a “burger joint/steaks” Place!

October 26th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Coming and Going, Neighborhoods - U Street, Restaurants, Restaurants - U Street | 43 Comments »

photo(9), originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

Dupont Circle isn’t the only one getting a new burger restaurant. The “burger joint/steaks” place will be a partnership between Omar Miskinyar from nearby Policy (just south of T St on 14th), Aman Ayoubi, (Local 16, 18th St Lounge, Marvin’s and formerly Dragonfly), and David Karim (Josephine’s, Policy and Current). They expect to open up in 5 months!

First cheesesteaks then crepes (not to mention Masa 14 and Birch & Barley/Church Key a bit further south) and now this. This has been a great couple of weeks for 14th Street.
