This is from Jess, 25, who got it done at Jinx Proof in Georgetown. It’s a peacock feather and I think it came out very cool looking.

Ha, this is a pretty good one. I had no idea what it was but apparently it comes from a children’s book called “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs”. I’d never heard of that book, have you guys?

This design was taken from a Japanese beer bottle top. It’s tough not to like owls…

Public School Hard, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

“So here is my submission, my homage to UDC Law. Simpler than your average TotW, but I sure like it.”

As a fellow public school graduate (South Side High School and Miami University, OH) I dig this tattoo the most!

Tattoo of the Week

July 9th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Tattoos | 10 Comments »

Photo 19, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

Explanation from a reader:

“It’s about a year old and was done at Jinx by Cory Rogers. It’s the CA flag (where I’m from) with the DC flag in the center (obviously). The rocks in the green are supposed to be brown, but I altered them to yellow (NJ’s flag, where I was born) and blue (NY’s flag where my family is from).”

Sweet representation!

It’s funny as I was admiring the one above I said it reminded me of a Russian nesting doll and she said, no that’s on the other arm:

It was done by Tattoo Paradise at 2441 18th Street, NW.

Spotted this one at Columbia Heights Coffee. I can’t find his name in my notes. But he lived in the CH neighborhood. Def. a bit on the darker side but pretty impressive art.

Tattoo of the Week

This week’s selection is for Father’s Day coming up. The owner is Luis Gomez who got it done at Paradise Tattoo on 18th Street in Adams Morgan. The tattoo is a portrait of his father who was a surgeon in the Colombian Army.

Ed. Note: I’m embarrassed to admit that when I saw it first out of the corner of my eye I thought it was of Nehru. But this is very cool too…

She got this tattoo in while stationed in Hawaii with the Navy. She wanted a tough looking pin up girl with the US Flag incorporated. The Chinese characters above translate into “Honor, Courage, and Commitment”.

I found this one at the jazz in the sculpture garden event. It was from a tourist visiting DC who got it done in Thailand. I’m fairly certain he and his friends thought I was insane… Cool tattoo though.

This one has a pretty cool back story. The owner tells me, it was inspired by some stained glass seen in an old church up in New Hampshire. Very cool.

Tattoo of the Week

I was very proud of myself for guessing that this script was Sanskrit. I have to say asking strangers to photograph their tattoos has not gotten any easier. Fortunately this woman was super nice. The tattoo is the last two lines of the Mangala mantra. It basically means, “May all beings be happy and free, Om shanti, shanti, shanti.”

Now I have a serious question. As is hopefully obvious, I’m a big fan of tattoos. I know lots of folks out there don’t like them and that is cool. But for the folks that do have them, I’ve always wondered about tattoos on the back. So I’m seriously curious, what pleasure do you get out of a tattoo on your back if you can’t see it?

Tattoo of the Week

Hopefully the warm weather will make this a more regular feature. This one is phenomenal. It is from the arm of Patrick, a bartender at Red Derby. The tattoo is of “Hotie”, the patron saint of fortune tellers, bartenders and prostitutes. Legend has it this was a real person who lived in Japan and always carried around a satchel filled with food that he gave to the poor.

Dear PoP – Where’s The Best Tattoo Parlor in DC?

January 28th, 2009 | By Prince Of Petworth in Dear PoP, Tattoos | No Comments »

DSCN1826, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

“I have a question for the masses… where is the best tattoo studio in the greater DC area? You feature the tattoo of the week on occasion and there are a few in my circle considering new body art, we are ill-reputed transplants as a byproduct of being in the military, so we do not know the reputation of places in the area. Cost and location are not huge issues, we’d venture out to the ‘burbs if necessary. Of concern are cleanliness, reputation and good artists.”

Let me just say the tattoo of the week will resume as soon as the weather gets warmer! But also I know there are lots of folks on here who have strong opinions about tattoos. So for those who aren’t fans please skip this post. But for those out there who are fans and/or have visited a good reputable artist in the city please leave your suggestions in the comments.
