PoP Pho Patrol: New Pho Restaurant Coming to 608 H Street, NW and Veggie Pho Now Available at Pho Viet

Thanks to a reader for the heads up:

“It appears a new pho place will be opening at 608 H St NW, according to DC Register. It looks like they’ll be applying for a liquor license and will be open til 3 am!”

The liquor application says:

“NATURE OF OPERATION
Asian and Vietnamese cuisine. 65 seats and total capacity load of 65 on first floor and
storage on the second floor.

HOURS OF OPERATION
Sunday through Thursday 9 am – 2 am and Friday & Saturday 9 am – 3 am”

And speaking of Pho a reader has some veggie Pho news from Pho Viet (3513 14th Street, NW):

“I’m a regular at Pho Viet. Nina and Mike are really great people and have put a lot of work into their restaurant and I’m dying for them to succeed. They spent a year renovating that basement and they’re some of the hardest working people I’ve ever met.

Anyway, I wanted to let you know that they added veggie pho to their menu and they have a chicken pho too (with beef broth). When you originally posted about them, there were a few commenters who wanted veggie pho.”

I am so excited to try Pho Viet. Darn I am lazy for not getting around to it yet! They are open until 9:30 Mon-Wed and until 10:30 from Thu-Sun according to the voicemail I just got.

  Just a caution on the hours. When we were last at Pho Viet on Tuesday, Feb 16, they were on the verge of closing on Tuesdays (effective Feb 23, according to the sign on the door). Nina said they were switching their closed day from Monday to Tuesday by popular demand, but were open on both days only during the transition period.

Awesome! I really like Pho Viet, it wasn’t that different from the Pho I had in Vietnam. Glad to hear that they’re adding veggie options though, the one veggie dish on the menu when I was there were the spring rolls with noodles.

Pho Viet is better than the other new pho place next to Target, but still, the chunks of meat are kind of small and not fatty enough. Best pho in the area is (sadly) way out in the suburbs — Pho Nam at 15942 Shady Grove Rd, Gaithersburg, MD 20877 is the best I’ve tasted. I think their trick is using lots of MSG which tastes amazing and makes you bloated and sleepy right afterwards.

  Try Pho 88 in Beltsville. That’s closer than Gaithersburg, and I’ve never had a bad meal there.

I second the vote for Pho Nam. So far no one can match them. They are they only reason I drive way out there.

Great news – only reason I haven’t tried Pho Viet is because I’m veggie and there was nothing on the menu for me (except the rolls). I’ll try it now!

If you think vegetarian pho is really vegetarian you need to learn a little about asian cooking. What makes pho photastic is the fact that its basically amazing beef stock. So depending on your militancy, just realize that the broth is mostly delicious melted bone marrow.. If its not made with animal stock, it aint “pho.” Its soup.
